While she believed in the power of beauty sleep and was more than capable of being a unapologetic lie-abed when left to her own devices, Mishael found herself far too wide awake to sleep the night after the first grand meeting of everyone at the bonfire. She had no roommate yet, though, and so could not find solace in company there. She suspected that everyone else was asleep. After all, some of them already embraced the more physical aspects of their training. She wrinkled her nose. The thought of hefting a sword or spear made her squirm; even in stage-fight training, she hated the things and often received a lecture about how fights should not really look like dances.

It was a metaphor.

The young woman sighed and ran both small hands through the thick, dark waves of her hair. She was antsy and bored and impatient to do things, to meet people. She wrinkled her nose. But that wasn't about to happen at this hour of night, she thought, or in her empty dorm.

Bouncing to her feet, Mishael grabbed her pink, fuzzy robe and pulled it on, belting it tightly around her slim waist, effectively covering her tank top and boxer shorts. The robe came down to mid-thigh. She glanced in the mirror and laughed; it looked like she had nothing on under the robe now. Oh, well. She shook her head, checked for her key, and slipped on silent feet from her room.

A little exploration might solve her fidgets.

*

Fifteen minutes later, Mishael had found a version of heaven. With glowing eyes, she stood on the stage in the great assembly hall and surveyed the way the benches rose around it. She listened to the night noises, filtered and concentrated by the shape of the hall. Her smile widened and she took a quick step stage left before kicking off her flip flops. Then she resumed her position center stage. She cocked her head to one side, closed her eyes, and breathed deeply.

Then... Slowly, she began dancing, blissful in the quiet and peace and the immense space.

Her life had all but been upended, but her sleeping schedule was not so fast to follow suit. When everyone was laying their head down for an early start, Rose was at the height of her wakeful hours, performances rarely ending before midnight had ticked past. She filled the hours with menial things - arranging her room, checking the accounts for the lounge, checking e-mail - but there were only so many minutes to be spent on trivial things. Handling the weapons had not yet come to pass, and she had no doubt she'd get there, but not at this hour.

Rose felt the need to move again, to do something, the nights spent without performance making her feel coiled tight to a point of discomfort. With a soft sigh, she donned her changing gown and a light three-quarter jacket and slipped out of her quarters. If she couldn't perform for others, perhaps she could perform for her own sanity.

*

The hall had left an impression upon Rose, in the way that the acoustics would be enough to carry and she would not disturb anyone. It was more than a small surprise to find the stage already occupied - a robed, dark-haired beauty spinning to an invisible tune, dancing to an empty audience. The blonde's need to do something was momentarily derailed by the joy of seeing another playing out the song in their heart - a rare treat, when one was a performer themself.

Delight begged to allow a few more moments to watch, but the unspoken professional rule of making one's self known was not an easy one to shake. After a moment of picking out a mental beat that the other moved to, Rose took a step forward from the side of the stage and raised her voice in wordless song, soft and velvet, improvising, eyes bright to marvel at the other woman's easy grace.

The voice, pure and lovely, almost made Misha lose her place in the dance but years of practice caught the beat again and saved her. She kept her eyes closed, instead choosing to use the first stretch of the music to provide clues about her new company. Feminine, practiced, elegant. The woman clearly knew what she was doing. A professional? Probably. If she wasn't, Misha thought, then she should be. A voice like that needed to be shared.

After a minute or two, Misha opened her eyes. She still resisted looking directly at the singer. Instead, she altered her steps until her feet danced a bit quicker, channeling something more akin to a heartbeat. She waited to see if the singer would pick up the visual cue and how she would translate it.

Though she could not easily smile while singing without changing the song, but the expression easily reached her eyes. Rose was more than pleased that the one she'd impressed upon was taking it in stride, even going so far as to invite her in return - almost like a challenge, an inquiry. Though she was initially hesitant to acquiesce, she had no such reservation now.

She took another step onto the stage but no further, not willing to risk a collision when they were creating their own scene. Her lips closed to a hum, the music of it dipping low and rich before picking up again, a soft tempo but having picked up to a slow heartbeat rhythm. Her lips parted in the continuation of the wordless song, alternating and carrying almost like guitar strings in a lazy strum, matching with the dancer's footsteps and the shift of her arms.

Misha finally opened her eyes and turned to look for her accompanist, far too charmed at the clear cleverness of the person. Taking hints and volleying back something else to challenge her? On top of having a voice like that? The petite brunette was extremely impressed and now wanted to put a face to the voice. Spotting the elegant woman, she nodded a cordial hello before the joy of movement broke her manners and her expression lit with a glorious smile.

She altered her steps slightly enough to sweep a graceful bow at the singer. Then, with a faintly musical giggle, Misha spun on the ball of her foot lifted both arms high above her head, and shifted into a quick-step dance reminiscent of a flamenco. Her pale eyes flashed with amusement and good-natured challenge.

Rose spread her hands and smiled at the greeting in her own form of a 'hello,' her voice lilting to add to the notion. She would have wound the song down to greet the dancer properly, but it seemed the performer had other ideas.

Delight lit her features as she wound her wordless song down, lifting her hands to clap and tap her heel against the stage. She began to sing a song then, an old flamenco piece that she knew, though the beat she kept with her hands and foot were of a faster pace to keep up with the dancer. "Besame, besame mucho," she sang around a slight grin, taking a step between beats, "Como si fuera esta noche la Ășltima vez - ."

Olden dances, like this, she knew and recognized - some, she could even join in on, but for now, she was more than content to be the jukebox to the woman's performance.

Misha let the song play out, meeting and spinning away from the words which Rose sent lilting through the quiet night. When the song finally came to its lovely end, she allowed her body to fall naturally into ballet's second position. Rotating on the balls of her feet, she turned to face Rose head-on and dipped into a low curtsy. "That," she sighed with an echo of perfect contentment, "was wonderful. Thank you so much."

Her smile lit her heart-shaped face and she straightened, brushing back dark strands of hair. "You are good. Very good. We're going to have to see if we can do karaoke nights around here!"

When the dancer came to a graceful finish and Rose's last word traced into the darkness, she clapped her hands appreciatively, beaming and impressed. With a soft laugh, her hands fell to her gown, dipping into a courtesy. "If I might be so bold to return those confident words to you," she spoke in a soft lilt reminiscent of how she sung, smokey notes still palpable. "You move like magic, and to see a dance be such an adaptive thing with life -- that was a treat. Thank you."

On light feet, she crossed the stage and extended both her hands to the other in greeting, her cheeks as rosy as her namesake. "I am Rose, Chosen of Apollo, honored backdrop to a most magnificent dancer. It is a pleasure to meet you."

"And you." With a smile as bright as sunshine, Misha took both of Rose's hands and squeezed them. Her grey eyes took in the other woman's appearance with a mixture of measurement and appreciation. The blonde not only had a lovely voice but a face to match.

"Apollo, huh?" Misha gave one final squeeze of Rose's hands and then released her. She cut a dramatic bow, hand over her heart. Laughter lit her expression, though, as she looked up from beneath her eyelashes and ducked head. "I'm Mishael but feel free to call me Misha,"' she continued. "I'm a Chosen of Aphrodite. I know why I'm wandering about - nose trouble - but how about you?"

The squeeze was returned, affectionate and unfettered. They were strangers no more, but even having not yet touched on friendship yet, Rose had no problem sharing her fondness of what had just transpired. "Mishael! Is it spelled like Misha?" she asked, pleasantly surprised by the sound of the name. "How beautiful. Misha it is, as you prefer, lovely Aphrodite. A wise Goddess she is, to choose you as Hers."

Her brows lifted slightly in polite interest to the comment about nose trouble, but she didn't press, retaining her open smile at the question. "My sleep schedule hasn't exactly caught up with my new God-touched duties," the songstress chuckled softly. "I'm a night bird, so to speak. The upturning of my life seems to extend to all wakes and walks of it." Her shoulders rolled effortlessly in a shrug. "I will adjust, and if it means I get to meet lovely individuals such as yourself, then...perhaps it is a bad habit I will keep."

Rose laughed then, soft and understated. "But if you've need to meander further, to deal with what you must -- I will find you again. That is a promise."

"That is the best promise I've had in a while." Misha grinned, impish. "I'll make one back if you'd like. I'm a night owl myself so, if you can't get yourself into a day-walker schedule any time soon, feel free to swing by the Aphrodite dorm. If I'm there and awake, we can go out exploring and getting into trouble together." A graceful step to one side and a gesture indicated the stage behind her. Misha winked then. "Or come out here for another private recital. I could dance to your gorgeous voice any time at all."

Shucks, no worries! Life happens! <3 I reckon we're nearly done, anyway. Maybe Rose takes her leave next or else I'll have Misha head out in my next post.
