A gust of wind whipped across the plain, picking up the leaf and swirling it upwards. He frowned slightly, and pounced anyways. His inexperienced paws batted at nothing but the wind. He landed in an undignified tumble of paws and tail. Janūbi rolled belly up, a half smirk on his face. It would have been a perfect catch, if not for the wind!

He blinked, focusing in on the sky. He'd never seen it so dark. The clouds seemed to roil, and take on lives of their own. The sun still hung in it's late afternoon position, but it looked like soon the clouds would also obscure it. In his short life he'd experienced a few brief squalls, this storm looked like it was shaping up to be quite spectacular.

The blonde colored make had been keeping his purple eyes on the little cub for a while now. Just making sure that he was safe and nothing would happen to him but had not approached just yet and had decided to stay laying down. Though watching him try to catch the leaf caused a small rumble to coarse through his body. Valiant effort to say the least but the wind was faster to take away the prize that should have belonged to Janūbi.

"Janūbi." The large lion said as he got up from his position. "You almost had it there!" Rooting for the small guy Ochieng felt pride well up in him. Wasn't he like this once when he was younger. Probably so. Would his brother recall such memories of his headstrong behavior to try and catch every little thing beneath his paws.

Now look at him, he was an adult and a pretty damn fine hunter.

Looking to the sky he noticed the clouds as well. It might rain soon but nothing like rainy season. Just a passing storm.

The little blue and white cub wriggled on his back to get a better look at the big male who was supervising him.

"The wind took it from me!" He squirmed again, and flipped himself onto his feet. "I want to be a hunter, but the wind is not co-operating. I wish I was bigger, like you. Then I would have caught it for sure."

Janūbi gave a self assured nod, while looking at Ochieng with an admiration. He knew how powerful the big male was, and admired that about him. Everyone seemed to admire good hunters, so he aspired to be one himself.

"How do I get better?" He batted at a tuft of grass with his paw. If he couldn't yet catch a leaf, he could hardly imagine how hard it would be to catch something that wanted to run.

Janūbi glanced skyward again, watching the clouds. The older lion didn't seem bothered by them, but he still wasn't too sure about them.

What a colorful little cub as he watched the little one pout about how the wind had taken his prize. "Not much use fighting the wind." The male chuckled as he got up and pawed his way over to Janūbi. "Even if you were bigger the wind could still take away the leaf from you. It is even more powerful that I am."

He put a paw on the little blue and white cub. "Patience and practice. That is how you get better. Read into everything. Sometimes you have to let some things go while others almost fall into your paws. To be a great hunter you have to have a lot of patience." Bringing his blonde and white head down to the other he nudged him a bit. "Sometimes that gets annoying though and just want to run."

There were a few times he got fed up watching a herd and just went with it. Those times he always came back empty pawed. Although on some rare occasions he at least managed to snag a sickly beast.

He looked back up tot he sky after feeling a rain drop smack him right in the muzzle. He glowered, it was still somewhat sunny out.

He knew what the advice was going to be, but that didn't mean that it was what he wanted to hear. "Sometimes I dream I'm grown-up already have practiced and waited. I wish that was real life!"

Janūbi nudged his head affectionately against the larger male. "But don't worry, I know it doesn't work like that. I'll practice. And watch." He glanced up again at the sky, and the swirling angry looking clouds.

A fat raindrop splattered right between his eyes, and ran down is muzzle. He instinctively shook his head. The drop was quickly followed by more. "It's like the sky doesn't know what to do... The sun's still out!"

Curiosity struck the little blue and white cub. He knew lions sought shelter during squalls, but what about herdbeasts? "What do the herdbeasts do when the weather's bad? Is that a good time to hunt?" Perhaps asking questions would also help him to be the hunter he dreamed of becoming...

No worries! I'm super multi-tasking. smile

A paw grabbed the smaller one and pulled him close to where he gave him a good noogie on the head. His laughter causing his big form to shake. "You'll be big and grown in no time cub. Once you are, you'll be the mightiest hunter out here." A few more rain drops slapping against his pelt. Oh how he disliked rain.

At the mention about the rain he thought about this for a moment. "Some of them probably try to hide away from the rain too." He had never actually hunted during the rain but there were probably those that did. "How about, we go try to see what we can find. Maybe I can even see if we can catch something." He would make sure Janūbi would stay back and only watch. Did not want him getting crushed underfoot any prey beast.

His mother would probably kill him if something were to happen to her little cub. That and his brother may also do the same.

His blue eyes went wide at the golden lion's suggestion. "Really? Do you really mean it?!? The youngster bounced on his paws, and butted his head against the large male. Janūbi had dreamed of his first hunt since he remembered dreaming.

"Ochieng, we're going to catch the biggest herdbeast, and then bring it back! Think about how proud Mama will be!" The cub practically vibrated. The rain splashing into his coat was now beyond his notice. Clearly there were bigger things to focus on.

"How do we know where to find them?" He spun around, scenting the air.

This was going to be dangerous. Especially as the rain drops started coming in larger quantities than before. "I really mean it." Nudging the cub with his head. A good solid hit from the cub too.

When the cub said something about his mom Ochieng inwardly groaned. If anything happened to her cub he was sure he was going to be in for some real trouble.

"I don't want you trying to take it down with me. You're still to small but you can help me track their scent and be my eyes on which one to go for. Ok?" The blonde and white male said quietly to the other.

Already he was starting to wander in a direction and begin sniffing for any signs of any herd beast around.

Janūbi stared up at the big lion, taking him very seriously. I'll listen, I promise.

Fat rain drops pounded into him, and the wind started in pick up. The golden lion had already started to pad off, so the cub bounded after him, sucking in lungfuls of rain-scented air, hoping to pick out herdbeasts. Janūbi has a grin plastered on his face. He couldn't believe it, they were going on a hunt!

His little paws splashed through puddles, and he lifted his muzzle higher, scenting the air. Along with the scent the grasses and plants made when it rained, he scented something else. It smelled wet, and sort of musky. The cub hadn't actually smelled wet herdbeast before, but he imagined that the smell might be something like the one he was detecting. Ochieng? What's that smell?

The male slowed as he took in the scents of the rain and musk of animals about. The winds downwind towards them in their favor. Good, meant they would not startle the beasts around but that also meant they were going to be taking the brunt of whatever the storm may cook up. He padded over to the young male and looked at him with a steady eye.

"It is the smell of prey beasts. Wildebeest to be exact. Stupid beasts they are." Still it would be a challenge to claw at one of the beasts back. He could do it it would just be a little longer by himself. "Can you see the herd?"

Of course the male could see the herd many many paces before them but he wanted to see if the little cub could as well. He wanted him to know what the prey was.

Wind-driven rain blew into the cub's eyes, as he continued sniffing the air. The wet musky scent was herdbeasts, then! He felt a small amount of pride at having scented them, and guessing correctly that they were prey.

"Wildebeests..." The wind made his quite word less than a whisper. At least the wind was blowing away from the animals. But it did mean driving wind and rain in his eyes.

Listening intently to the golden male Janūbi squinted his eyes into the rain, scanning the horizon for what he scented. Off in the distance he could see some dark huddled forms, gathering together against the driving wet.

"Are those them?" He gestured with his muzzle towards the shapes in the distance. "They don't look like they much like the rain either...

"Those are them." He replied. Their huddled forms were a glorious sight. Hunger would not get the best of him as it began to settle within the pit of his stomach. "No one likes the rain little one."

They would begin the hunt soon. "Let us take a moment to get ourselves ready. Again, if you were to get hurt your mother would have my hide." He chuckled and pulled the cub close. Soon one of those beasts would be their dinner. He could also probably drag it back closer to his family.

Let's end this one here and begin another with them on the actual hunt.
