Below the arena floor and guarded at all times by armed warriors, is the Pit. The Pit is home to a vast number of iron cells, each intended to house criminals sentenced to death. Rather than a simple execution, criminals are sent to the pit and given basic training as gladiators, before being sent to fight in the arena. If they die, their sentence has been carried out. If they win, they live to fight another day. Enough victories, and their sentence may be lifted, allowing the gladiator to go free.
Besides just the cells, the pit contains open training areas for the benefit of the prisoners, and a dining area where they are fed. No weapons are allowed in the pit but those used by the guards, and any hint of revolt is met with immediate execution. Suffice to say, the Pit is not someplace people want to be.
