THIS PROMPT IS NOW CLOSED.

Olivia von Hooten, dressed in impeccable riding gear with a loose scarf around her throat, has set up not in the courtyard outside the ares dorm, but in the center of the track -- with a huge table at one end, piled with weapons. These, at least, aren't edged; they're carefully padded with foam, to make them good for practice but not equipped to actually hurt anyone.

They're newbies, and while she might have been willing to risk a couple fingers, the ruling had been for safety.

So. With a smile on her face that doesn't quite touch her eyes, Olivia lets the new recruits gather in the stadium seating above, gesturing them in closer in a warm and friendly sort of way, and for the better part of an hour, she instructs them in how to use pretty much every kind of weapon in the armory.

All of them old-fashioned. No guns. No rocket launchers. Moving parts? maybe, but no gunpowder and no electronics. They're not compatible with the magic.

Some of them might wonder why they need this, and she'll cover that, too.

"Monsters are real," which sounds like madness, but she's serious about it.

"Monsters are drawn to the Chosen," which might sober them all up and draw in their focus.

"Sometimes, we need you to fight them," which doesn't mean all of them, of course, and she clarifies that too. Sometimes, people are better suited to other tasks, and naturally, everyone at the Prytaneum understands that. Not everyone has to be an amazing fighter, but they do need to know the basics.

"So. Get down here and practice."

OOC: Combat Playtesting

While we've written a simple but effective combat system that should be well-balanced and interesting to play with -- but the key word in that sentence is should. The problem is that it hasn't, as of yet, gone through rigorous playtesting.

That's where you come in.

Before our first Epic begins, we were hoping that players would be willing to play through some spars and fight against some test dummies, to make sure that the system feels fair. Information about our combat system can be found here, and we ask that you read through all that information carefully before continuing. There's not a lot of it, and hopefully it's clear!

Once you've read through that information, you can help us out by playing through one of two kinds of threads.

Sparring

Find a partner, and start a new thread with [1v1] in the title. Each of you can pick up one practice weapon of any type for the purpose of your spar. You can switch weapons between spars; there's a wide array of options for your character to play with. Start by rolliing 1d20 each, applying any bonuses or penalties as required, and then follow the rules as best you can to find until one of you hits 0 HP or you no longer wish to continue. Posts along with your spar can be as short as you like, but should contain at least some small amount of RP.

Practice Dummies

Either by yourself or with a partner, start a new thread with [1vP] in the title. Everyone in the thread can pick up one practice weapon of any type for the purpose of this practice session. Start by attacking one of three kinds of dummies, applying any bonuses or penalties as required, and then follow the rules as best you can until the dummy hits 0 XP or you no longer wish to continue. Posts can be as short as you like, but should contain at least some small amount of RP.

Beginner Dummy -- Beginner dummies have 25 HP. They don't attack back. They just stand there.

Intermediate Dummy -- Intermediate dummies have 40 HP. They also launch small bolts that hit you for 3 HP every time you attack them.

Advanced Dummy - Advanced dummies have 75 HP. They also launch small bolts that hit you for 5 HP every time you attack them. They should be fought at least in pairs.

_______________

Note that you can also post in this thread, to ask IC questions about combat. If you have any OOC questions, please ask them in the FAQ thread.
