Upon arriving at the Prytaneum and getting her shared dorm situated on her side of things, Alexandra spent most of her time that didn't revolve around school work in the gymnasium. It was second nature for the lean woman to venture over and find some sort of punching bag and practice. She'd chosen one of the beginner dummies, just to get a feel of the environment.

It was clear that she'd rather spar against another, moving person, than a dummy but she'd yet to meet anyone she felt like approaching for such needs. So, instead, she'd set up one of the dummies and treated it like a punching bag. She'd opted to use her hands and feet because that was what she was familiar with.

But...

She had been eyeing some of the staffs that were lining the wall, fingers itching to wrap around the base of one and test how they felt. Or even one of the bows and a sheath of arrows, because she'd always been interested in archer but it never seemed practical.

Would it be now?

Alex wasn't sure, but she was willing to bet that knowledge of a wide range of weapons would come in handy and something light weight and balanced seemed perfect for her, her stature, and her current combat style. So, when she finished with her training dummy, she moved across the building to examine the weapons.

The gym was, in Lincoln's estimation, one of the places that he would frequent the most. Besides having a tendency towards the physical in general, his previous occupation had made it necessary to stay in shape, and it was a habit that Lincoln had yet to break.

He had found the gym on his first day, made a mental note of it's location, and then come back the next to practice. The weapons were mostly ignored, at least for the time being; that would come later, once Lincoln was more certain of his bearings and less bogged down by the gallons of information that were currently being dumped over everyone's head.

Now he stepped into the gym again, his dark hair partially pulled back away from his face, the rest falling down his broad back. Dressed in a pair of sweatpants and a tank top, Lincoln made his way over to the wall of weapons, his gaze sweeping across them, resting more interestedly on some of the broadswords and machetes, less so the ranged weapons. Archery was something he was familiar with, but Lincoln preferred the weight of something more substantial in his hand.

There was another person at the wall as well; a young woman with red hair that was eyeing the set of them with a musing look. Lincoln glanced over at her, back at the weapons, then back at her again. He said, in a low, faintly accented voice that was quite calm,

"Are you looking for anything in particular?"

The moment Lincoln entered the space, Alex was aware of him and tension rippled though her. Her shoulders were stiff and her fingers curled into wrapped palms, jaw setting as she purposely avoided eye contact in favor of plucking an arrow from it's quiver to examine the tip. It was sharper than she expected, but her handling of it was careful and eventually she returned it to it's rightful place and moved further down the way, away from the man.

But then-

He spoke to her and with a slow exhale, Alex turned her head towards him, gaze sharp and intense with her eyes an icy blue. "No," came her curt response. She kept his gaze easily even if she had to tilt her chin slightly.

She shifted her feet and had three-fourths of her body facing him, jaw ticking as she made an effort to gauge him. "I know what I'm using." And she did, instinctively the woman knew she'd be choosing a staff. Something lightweight for her smaller frame.

Perhaps something like what could be found during the compatibility testing or slightly longer.

She was looking at the archery equipment, Lincoln saw, his eyes flickering to the arrow that she was holding in her hands. It was a long, slender thing that was apparently unsatisfactory, as she placed it back in its quiver a moment later and moved on. Lincoln watched her somewhat warily; a wariness that became even more pronounced as she turned to look at him with a hard look in her eyes.

He took no offense to it; he never did.

"If you know what you're using, are you practicing against a dummy, or would you prefer a sparring partner?" Lincoln asked quietly, and he reached for one of the shorter staffs, not quite as long as some but still able to be gripped easily in both hands.

He tossed it absently from side to side; he'd be more comfortable with a machete, but something told him that starting off training using a sharp object might not end well, even if it was just with one of the practice dummies set up around the place.

Alex picked up on the wariness immediately.

The man was regarding her carefully, as she had him, and she knew what type of signals she was emitting. Alexandra Kingsley was a woman who was rough around the edges, strong-willed, and fierce. Someone who judged quickly, knew how to think on her feet, and who often didn't move past her first impression of someone. Which meant that first impressions were often make or break for the somewhat abrasive woman.

Her first impression of the tall, obviously muscled man was: acceptable. So far at least, she'd yet to properly judge him and was, mildly, annoyed at the fact that she clearly wasn't interested in company.

But a moving target was tempting and it'd been a few days, weeks even, since she'd last trained against someone. She needed to keep her instincts sharp and the only way to do so was to practice and this man - Ares most likely from the look of him and his interest in sparring - was offering.

"Fine," she replied gruffly, crossing the space between them and reaching for a staff suitable for her height and weight. It was easy to twirl in her hand when she stepped back. "But I don't pull punches."

The message was clear, I don't hold back so neither should you.
