When Pasi had moved to Destiny City, he'd not bothered with a gym membership; it just wasn't on his list of things that needed doing, nor did he really care to put forth the money, time, and energy required by such things.

Becoming a senshi had changed much of that, not because he felt he'd be a more effective combatant if he were 'gym buff' but more because the General Labyrinthite seemed to require a certain level of competence in his underlings which translated - loosely - to a higher level of physical fitness than Pasi had previously cared to engage in.

So when he decided to join a gym, he did research and found a few that might suit. Forever Fitness was the one he eventually went with, for several reasons; it was inner city and therefore convenient and easy to access, the cost was competitive, the facilities up to date, technology friendly, clean...and best of all, it had a sauna. Actually, it had four saunas available and three of those were accessible to Pasi, which he appreciated. Now, naturally the facilities were not quite as awesome as those he'd enjoyed back in Finland - the bias was real - but over all he found them quite suitable when paired with the other benefits of forking over cash.

Wednesday morning found Pasi entering one of the saunas after a rough night of patrolling and being mauled by (and mauling) dust monsters - he was skipping class to enjoy what he felt was well-deserved respite; the Finn walked in with his fluffy white towel not wrapped around his waist or hiding the bruises blooming on his skin but simply hung over one broad shoulder and a water bottle to help stave off dehydration. The brunet's hair was pinned up off his neck and escaping tendrils moved as he nodded at those already in the steam filled room as he found a space, lay his towel out, and settled down with a content sigh.

Part of enjoying saunas in the United States was having to come to terms with the fact that it wasn't a regular enough part of the cultural experience for there to be an understanding of, or regular etiquette for, using them. Sometimes people didn't read the posted rules. Many did not observe that they were supposed to shower off first before getting into the sauna. Sometimes people got awkward about public nudity. It was worse if it was the mixed gender saunas. Still, it was commonplace for most of the gym goers to opt out of the 'nudity allowed', or 'towel wrapped waist' options and jump for the 'bathing suit' option.

Someone coming in without any reservations, let alone still knowing to put their towel down to be courteous of the wood, was unusual. It was also really, really early in the day.

Most of the early gym goers showered and went to work. They weren't interested in the unwinding with a sauna yet. It meant that this newcomer was the only other person in the hot box. And a person Björn Guildson didn't know. At the gym he'd been coming to for years now. Maybe he doesn't want social time. That is usual for mornings. But it is polite to at least greet, ja?

"Hej, " came rumbled from his spot on the boiling top and corner bench.

In the hazy heat, one other sat - a bear of a man and as Nordic looking as they came. Being greeted not in abrasive English but in familiar Swedish gave Pasi a bit of pause; he’d hoped to not have to make small talk by coming early, yes…but that mostly applied to the typical person he’d come into contact with in Destiny City.

“Hej.” Swedish felt strange across his tongue, like the words to a song from one’s childhood being recalled as an adult. It tasted like bitterness as his learned annoyance at being a Finn using Swedish fought with the politeness meeting someone in a sauna merited; he’d have rather conversed in Finnish, but while many Finns were acquainted with Svenska due to Finland having been occupied by Sweden previously, it did not always go both ways. Language of choice or no, Pasi was not displeased to converse with someone that knew a tongue other than the abrasive American English.

He may even have smiled a bit, looking over at Björn while heat prickled at his skin. “Hur är det?”

"Tack, Skapligt. Lä´get? Roligt att ses, " Björn beamed back with a smile equal parts surprised and warm. Anyone speaking Norsk or Svenska casually, conversationally, in America was rare-found. His heart had left with his mother, and with the rest of his family, back to Scandinavia. His blood was of both continents, but home had settled elsewhere this year, save the remote stars of Lady Hvergelmir, Colin, and Kairatos. This stranger earned some part of that- sudden and unguarded against familiar words and habits that had been only of healing and heartfulness. "My name is Björn. "

"If you want more steam, feel welcome to add water. " If the newcomer was savvy to sauna culture, then it was just as likely that he could handle greater heat then most of those who came in as a novelty. It was part of why Björn made quick work of moving to the top benches, leaving the lower open to casual sauna-goers. The higher heat soaked better through to deep muscles.

He is roughed up for the morning. Maybe he is in one of those fight club things? Or a security guard? Maybe he is in an actual gang. I think I know all the officers that come here...unless he was very, very new. There is no telling. It is early to be roughed up. Oh- maybe he does a sport of some kind? Tall enough for it.

Warm rolling syllables and a smile that was oddly open; it made him miss Finland. "Björn. Trevligt att träffas. Jag heter Pasi." He'd taken a space further from the heat, but when Björn offered, he got himself up and moved closer to the steam bed, taking a top bench near enough to the big blond to be conversational and put more water on the stones without getting too up in his personal space.

Even so, it was closer than he got to most people willingly, save for the odd occasion he couldn't help it - like class, the store, the bus.

"This is place is pretty nice." Part of why he'd picked it. "I missed sauna. Have you come here much?" It was always good to hear from someone that may have long been a patron whether a place was good or no; at the least he'd have another opinion to weigh while engaging in conversation. Scrapes stung anew with salt from sweat, but he welcomed the sensation - he was still alive - and it was no worse than striking himself with vihta, though he'd not done hat since his last visit back home.

“I come every day, “ It was, again, easier to form sentences by using pieces of what the other used in question. It felt a little like being reduced to grade school again, except for the small assurance that expressing himself in words out loud tended to get easier just by doing it. “They have space, good equipment. And real sauna. ”

Pasi, for knowing how to actually enjoy a sauna, would be a welcome addition to routines at the gym, even if only occasional, and casual, acquaintance. Maybe that is a bad thing, to put onto another so much that is not themselves. Hoping for him to stay around once in awhile as just a reminder that Scandinavia is still out there. Or is it dread…that name still out there.
Nærøyfjord.
Well. Maybe it is a comfort to him, too. Hearing accents from near home.

“The morning and late evening at the sauna is the best. Quiet and they know how to sauna. “

“You are a new member, Pasi? Or day pass?”

Every day. Pasi could believe it, looking at Björn; the man's physique suggested not only expansive amounts of time at the gym, but also a hard life where those muscles were used for more than show. "Seems that way." A quick swipe at the sweat beading across his brow and the Finn nodded at Björn's words; maybe he ought to make use of the equipment as well as the sauna. "The sauna is the reason I joined."

Rare to want to smile at another, but the helpful offer of prime sauna times pulled the taciturn Finn's lips into a toothsome grin. "Thanks for the tip. Lucky for me those are the best times for me to come." He's being helpful, I do wonder - does he find talking to me as pleasant as I to him? Swedish, but good enough. Comfortable. I miss Finland - I wouldn't be Aue there. Or would he - no telling.

"New member and worth the price just for the sauna." Pasi tilted his head at Björn, gaze considering, "You come more for sauna or for weights? From looks of you, weights are very important."

“I’ve been a year off, but I compete in Strongman. I spend a lot of time with the weights, “ Björn chuckled. “But the sauna is just as important. “

“Muscles need to relax, or they will tear. Like a rubber band stretched too far, ja? Fuel, Work and Rest. “ He let the silence be companionable for a little. Sauna-time was as much of any time as one could hope to get conversation from a Finn, from experience with family friends far abroad. Still, it was also a time where silences could be comfortable and welcome, even in America. The Culture and People of the land were so uncomfortable with silence, but the fog of a sauna seemed one of the few places that filled up the air enough to prevent others from trying to do so with empty words. The two of them could indulge together. It was not rushed time.

“The cafe is very fresh. When you are done, can I buy you a coffee?”

Pasi raised one brow, but it wasn't in surprise that Björn would be a Strongman competitor, it was more that he'd taken a year off - the scarring had something to do with it, he was sure, but had no plans to ask - and that he was approving of the comment about the sauna being just as important as weights.

"Common sense." Which was to say, with the hint of scorn in his tone, he'd noticed most folks didn't have - or just didn't use - common sense when it came to their bodies. Clearly, he and large sauna-using companion were smarter simply by being not wholly American. They sat for some time, Pasi's mind wandering from thought to thought, from something to nothing, as he enjoyed the simplicity of steam, sweat, and sauna with someone else that got it.

Björn's voice roused the Finn and his brain slowly put the rumbling, accented syllables into proper place to be parsed and answered. "Hyväksyn." Pasi leaned forward, chuckling a little as he realized he'd answered in Finnish without thinking (instead of meaning to do so in order to troll someone). "Sure. Coffee's good after sauna." And after a brisk shower, of course.

From his small experience, Finns meant what they said, or didn't say anything at all. Things weren't just platitudes or niceties, and " I hope we can meet again" meant they'd be expecting you to call them sometime soon to follow up on that hope. American culture had a lot of that sort of thing said for politeness only, or to assure the host you had a good time more than an actual intent to schedule further. Pasi had accepted the offer, which meant that it would happen today when they were both done with sauna, shower and dressing. There was no worry about having to be at each other's pace, and the expectation and acceptance was there that either would wait and relax near the cafe until sighting the other.

There was a comfort to that certainty.

It made social-cue guessing and implied meanings irrelevant at a certain level. The usual implicit colors of tone and word usage remained, but the rest was a good deal simpler. And welcome, so far as Björn was concerned. As was the Finnish. He couldn't didn't have the tongue, himself, but the sound of an accent was pretty universal. And the secondary translation polite. "I don't speak Finnish, very sadly. I wish I could make that gift to you."

And he said it as no idle chatter himself, " When we see each other again in the sauna, I will try for it, whether that is a week from now or three months. Whenever we cross paths. And you can probably laugh." A self aware, but comfortable grin accompanied the offer of humor and wager. A Finnish Roast should be good entertainment. " A greeting in Finnish, when I see you next. If I can, you can tell me all the ways I have made awful your language. If I cannot even attempt it, I will owe you a longer drink."

Having been there sometime already, the window for avoiding aches from too much was drawing to an end. Björn slowly turned each joint and limb to set and the body before carefully standing and walking down the side near the wall. "At coffee, then. Enjoy the sauna!"

It was a problem often run into in daily life - the platitudes that came so easily to Americans, the easy way they spoke without intent to follow through - and one that annoyed the hell out of Pasi even after so many years living state-side.

Pasi waved a hand at Björn's sorrow - however small - at not being able to understand or speak Finnish. The sentiment was a nice one, however, and he did appreciate not having to parse whether or not the Swede meant what he said or if he were blowing smoke up Pasi's a**. Really, it is nice to not think about that sort of stupidity...

And then Björn was saying how he would give Finnish a try, for the next time they saw one another, which brought an answering grin onto the Finn's face. "I should like that, it would be good to hear," He gave the blond a sly look and laughed, expression open and full of good nature, "Either way." For good or bad, Pasi would look forward to hearing Björn's attempt at his language.

"At coffee." Pasi watched Björn's retreating back, saw the scars there, and wondered idly again what might have caused such extensive damage. It would be something to ponder as he finished up his time in the sauna unhurriedly.
