While Aleksy was busy dealing with some kind of patriotic floral emergency, Finn let himself into his boyfriend's house and... colonized the kitchen. Baked a cake. Iced it. Wrote Happy Birthday Lyosha on it in shaky blue letters. Marinated some steaks. Made a salad and some roast asparagus. Set the table. Got the steaks on the grill-- And was just setting them to rest when he heard Aleksy's key in the lock. "Hey!" Finn called. "Have a seat! Dinner's almost ready!" Finn was definitely gunning for Boyfriend of the Year.

Aleksy was allowed back out again, which was a blessing that came two days before his birthday. His reflection was still ******** around somewhere in the world, somewhere not where it was meant to be. Instead of fussing over it like he wanted to, he tended to a near-disaster at the American Legion and went home. Finn called out and Aleksy thought, ah yes, that’s why the Jeep is outside, before kicking off his shoes and fastidiously lining them up. “I would have cleaned if I’d known you were coming,” he said, perching on one of his chairs.

"It's fine it's fine," Finn assured him, making his way out of the kitchen with a plate in either hand. "I found everything I needed. And I'll clean up after, too!" He wasn't like one of those rude boyfriends who cooked all afternoon and left the kitchen a huge mess. He set the plates down and then, without comment, busied himself cutting up Aleksy's steak. He knew this was embarrassing - better to not remark on it and make it worse. "Besides," he said, stepping back. "I wanted to surprise you. It's your birthday. You only turn 26 once." Right? "I hope it's all to your liking," he said, pressing a kiss to Aleksy's cheek.

It was embarrassing, and Aleksy was embarrassed. He stared over Finn's head and pretended not to exist until Finn sat down. "Thank you, Finnsha," said Aleksy, not blushing. He was smiling, though, because, okay, this was pretty nice. He planned to go to Darlene's to watch fireworks, but this was--it was more private. Personal. Exactly the way Aleksy liked things best. "How was your shift last night? The revelers survived intact?"

"I only had to help two people out of a tree," confirmed Finn. "Something about a hammock." He'd taken one look at the situation and decided that, though he was curious, he really didn't want to know. " A lot of bottles to clean up this morning," he confided - campsites were always a mess on big weekends. "Tomorrow will be worse. I'm glad I'm not on duty tonight, though. Don't have to deal with firework smugglers." Some people were morons. Some people would also receive lifetime bans from the state forest. He cut into his steak. "So - so how'd I do?" asked Finn. "Everything taste good?"

"You rob Mr. Darwin of the best proof of his work," said Aleksy, who was of the opinion that if you were dumb enough to climb a tree you would also be dumb enough to climb down. Or whatever. "It's very good," said Aleksy of the meal. He made quick work of the sides first, then turned his attention to the pre-sliced steak. "Thank you." New conversation topic. Hm. "I was thinking about going to Darlene's to watch the fireworks," he said. "Yea or nay?"

Finn made a noise halfway between a sigh and a laugh. "That's me, standing in the way of natural selection - but the paperwork for a death in the park is a nightmare." He looked expectantly at Aleksy at that, hoping he might get a laugh out of him - his boyfriend's sense of humor tended to be a bit morbid. He turned thoughtfully to his asparagus for a moment, considering the proposition about Darlene's. "Would you be okay with walking?" he asked. "Parking in that neighborhood will be a nightmare right now."

Aleksy smiled, a reflexive and sincere thing. "What has bureaucracy touched that it hasn't spoiled," he asked, rhetorically. "I'm fine with walking. If I do, are you going to call Liam and snitch on me?"

"Oh," said Finn, suddenly concerned. "Are you not supposed to be walking at this point? I thought it was just no heavy lifting..." He trailed off, eyebrows crinkling. "You're ******** with me," he concluded. "Jeez. That was one time. Can you blame a dude for worrying?"

"Yes," Aleksy said, looking back down to his food. "I can. He read me a bedtime story, Finn. I am a grown man." He sounded aggrieved. What kind of person called someone else's dad for backup? ******** rude as ******** class="quote"> Silverah

That, Finn thought, sounded like a personal problem and not something he could have helped. He'd called for backup. It wasn't his fault that the backup he'd called had a tendency to over-parent. "I'll make it up to you," Finn assured him, though he wasn't sure what Aleksy would try to cash in that favor for. "C'mon. You know I'm good for it."

Aleksy figured Finn was probably good for any favor Aleksy asked for, but he wasn't going to not make Finn sweat over it. "Yeah? What're you thinking, Derouen?"

"You're the birthday boy," said Finn, flipping the question smoothly around. "Whatever you want."

"Kholotz," said Aleksy, without even stopping to think about it. "Three bags of kholotz. That I don't have to share with anyone."

That wasn't what Finn had had in mind, but he could handle it. "Yeah, sure," he said, smiling broadly across the table. "I can make that happen."
