It was a few days later before she came back for the books they had picked out. He’d wrapped them up in a plastic bag, with all the stickers for price re-stuck onto a bookmark for easy scanning.
He knew it was going to seem…rather odd but he’d made her up a little kit or her too. He was really seeming like it was far too likely that everyone he met in this town was going to end up there –eventually-.

He’d put the ‘kit’ into an over the shoulder duffle, the straps perhaps a little longer than normal, and it advertised Elizabeth Bronte via a pen and ink drawing of the author in a cartoon style.

Inside the duffle was a small, foldaway umbrella, an emergency blanket (silver foil and packs away to the size of a wallet)… a pepper spray, because it was more portable than wasp spray… and of course, Protein Bars paced into a zip-lock bag. Last of course was a small zip lock with band aids, dental floss, and a small sewing kit.

If she ended up on ‘the other side’ She’d at least have something. Plus if she undid the bag with the power bars, she’d find there was a small note that said ‘Don’t make bargains unless you’re sure.”

He was hoping she wouldn’t find –that- one till she needed it, and at the same time hoping she found it before the subject came up.

Then again, he was hoping that she wouldn’t find this horrifically creepy.

It'd taken a bit longer to go get the books than what she'd originally estimated for one reason and one reason alone; Naz had felt the divine inspiration to make something for Zac. Most specifically, she'd made a teeny tiny Mogget, complete with little eyebrow markings and all - it'd been a bit more detailed than she usually went, but with some luck it had come out good. She was glad, for the whole thing was a labor of love and the only likeness she'd ever tried to capture before had been her old cat, some years ago.

The little felt cat was currently in her shoulder bag, having been carefully tucked away to avoid being damaged on the trip to the bookstore.

Which was a short trip all in all, and she stepped through the door to throw a cheerful wave and a "Hey Zac!" at her newfound friend.

Coming closer to him she gave him an excited smile, fingers curling on the strap of her shoulder bag. "I left Fiene at home this time, hope you don't mind."

“No problem! I’ll just have to catch her another time.” He smiled.
A purr-mau was heard from behind the counter, and then a familiar white form –popped- up to settle beside the register.

“I have your books for you still, and um, I made you a little… ‘Bad days in Ashdown kit” just for you to have on you.” He said he set the books on the counter and then pulled out the gift duffle and pushed that across to her.

“I mean, I hope you’ll never need more than the umbrella but, um, yeah, Uh…” He hesitated trying to think of a good rationalization for the rest of the contents.
“My um, Guardian, he’s a police detective so, sorry if it seems over prepared.” He grinned sheepishly. “But um, you’ll probably hear sooner or later that I got stuck in the woods for seven days so…”

He rubbed the back of his neck in some apology.

Naz had her hand halfway out to attempt to pet Mogget when Zac put the books and then his gift on the counter. Bewildered, she stopped, looking at the gift and then at her new friend.

But she didn't even manage to get out a 'what?' before he was off, explaining the duffle bag and its reasoning.

"Oh! I-" she paused, rearranged her thoughts to put them in order and then continued; "thank you Zac, that's immensely sweet of you." A warm, affectionate smile bloomed on her face; okay, so this was a bit of a weird gift as she was pretty sure she wasn't going to get stuck in the woods, but it was the thought that mattered - and she thought it mattered a great deal that he'd liked her well enough to worry about her already.

"Although I'm probably not going to be spending much time in the woods; not really my kind of thing, honestly." She grinned at him before her expression dampened to something more serious, "I hope you're okay, though, with the whole woods thing... that's gotta have been tough. If you ever want to chat I'm here, yeah?"

But there was another thing... "Oh! Actually, I have something for you too; it's not as big as the bag, but -" a quick rummaging in her bag brought forth the tiny Mogget, wrapped in silk paper. With a bright smile she held it out to him, "I hope you'll like it!"

The look of delight that came over his face
“That…..that is the cutest thing anyone has ever given me!” He gawped at it and stared at the details rendered in wool.
“D-Did you make this?? This is –amazing! I mean, you… you could sell these things to people! I should pay you for this!!” He was flushing and holding the felted Mogget close to his chest carefully.

Yes it totally bypassed if he was okay with the woods situation, but it also let him bypass the fact he hadn’t been lost in the woods at all. Well, not any literal kind of woods at any rate.

She laughed brightly, waving a hand dismissively; "No, no! It's just a hobby, yeah? Something to do when I need to de-stress or just, y'know, keep my hands busy. I have a ton of things like that at home, waiting for people to foist them on." Just generally not as elaborate as this one, but she wasn't going to bring that up.

Watching the way he handled the felted Mogget made her feel very happy though - he obviously wasn't faking his joy. She'd put a lot of effort into making this one just right, and it made warmth bloom in her chest and her smile to see him appreciate it.

But he'd gone to just as much effort for her; her hand on the duffel bag told her it had several items in it, and her curiousity was great to see what they were. "What sort of things did you pack in here?" A bad days kit, but what exactly did that mean?

The drawing on the duffle was lovely and she took a few moments to admire it before she sent Zac one more warm smile and focused her attention on unzipping her new bag.

It held - "An umbrella?" Puzzled, she took it out and examined it. Foldaway, so it didn't take up much space. Still, not the first thing she'd have expected. Putting it down again she went for the next item, which turned out to be something silver and square. "What's this?" Holding it up so he could see, her puzzled expression said clearly that she had no idea what this was.

“The um…umbrella in case you get one of the um, freak showers that sometimes turn up.” He offered a watery grin, still clutching the precious little creature.
“And um, that’s ah…that’s an emergency blanket. I found it in the mega-mart in the car section, it seemed really uh… cool and useful.” He shrugged.
“I maybe went overboard but…” He waved his hand trying not to seem like he should be wearing a tin foil hat.

“But um, but yeah! You really should sell some of your extras! We could see if one of the local stores might put up a little like, a glass case where we could display them! You could make them when the mood struck you but then you could….could make money for more supplies or something.”

"No, no, it's fine! Very useful!" She grinned encouragingly at him before putting the blanket back into the bag. "I'd just never seen one before, that's all. But now I can say I'm the proud owner of a survival kit - that's gotta earn me some cool points, yeah?" Emergency blankets counted as a survival kit, she figured. It was at the very least closer to owning one than she'd ever been before.

"Nah don't worry about it - I put up a flyer in the grocery store but any more than that might just be too much work, yeah? Better to save it for friends and stuff; anyway, I'm really glad you like it. Really." Her smile confirmed the truth of the statement, radiant and affectionate.

Zac nodded his understanding, yes; he did understand that one could work a craft past the point of enjoyment. “True, if anyone asks though I can absolutely vouch for quality and cute-factor!” He added after a moment. “So if anyone wants someone to vouch, I mean, I don’t know if artists need that, I kind of don’t do that sort of thing, I’m mostly books.” He rambled.

“Um, yeah.” He felt the heat in his cheeks. He liked her, she seemed a good person and he really hoped she’d never need the kit, but by gosh, he was more than a little sure that one day she might.

"You know, I have no idea either," she sent him a conspiratorial grin. "But if someone does I'll refer them to you. And hey, thanks for calling me an artist! I can honestly say I've never thought of myself as that, but it's definitely a nice upgrade from geek." It'd never occurred to her that felt animals might be art; not because she didn't like them, it'd just never... felt like she thought creating art was supposed to feel.

"Do you write yourself? Since you said you're mostly books. Fantasy adventures starring Mogget maybe?" Hell, she'd read that.

He blinked in surprise at the thought. It wasn’t something that he had ever tried, he’d thought of occasional stories but it was too easy to believe that He’d be about the same quality as certain published Fan fictions.

“Oh… No I mean, I can read quickly but I’ve never written anything. “ He flushed. “The owner of the store does, I think… I mean I’m not sure I mentioned it.” He rambled. “I… think I did… sorry, He’s actually a really good writer and…” He waved his hands wishing very much that he’d be able to stop blushing on command.

“… But that would be kind of funny.” He admitted, and glanced down at the felted doll.

“… Work together and make a little book, with photos of felted Mogget and his Felted Friends.” He grinned sheepishly.

"Yes!" She laughed, imagining what kind of book they could make. "That'd be a lovely children's book - hell, we could even include some easy how-to's for making your own Mogget and Friends. A bit less fancy than that one," she nodded to the miniature, "but still something cute, yeah? Maybe round in shape, that'd probably be the easiest.." For a moment she got lost in thought, planning out what kind of shape would be easiest for a child to master - they'd need a simple how-to, something that even novices could throw themselves at. Nothing with wire, that could get a bit fiddly for a beginner, especially a kid. Maybe -

Starting, she blinked a couple of times and came back to the conversation; "Ah sorry, got a bit caught up in thought there." An apologetic smile and she leaned on the counter. "What kind of adventures would they go on, though? Risky rescue missions with dragons and trolls? Or something a bit more mundane, maybe. Cheering up a sad kid?"

“Don’t be sorry!” He assured her, “I think it’s a great idea if we used it to show people how to do it too, kids and parents could have fun with it!” He nodded.

He did look very serious about the thought of a story, it was tempting to do something that related to the town, but it would need simplified in all honesty.

“… What about well, I suppose it would depend first on the length of the book we want to write. A picture book in truth with photos, we’d have to be very careful about the message. I think I like the idea of… dragons or trolls, or just strange things. Maybe something that seems scary but isn’t…like, being brave but cautious.”

"Oh, like a combination of the two - the scary made more mundane?" She hummed, thinking. "That could definitely work; seems a proper theme for a kids' book too, something teaching them that being afraid is okay but you can still be brave. Or did I get it wrong?"

"No you got it!" He nodded.

"Cause sometimes things can look very normal, but be scary, and you have to be able to make a judgement call, I think its good for kids and adults you know?"

He smiled at her and looked thoughtful.

"Yeah, if you are really up for it, I'll um, I'll try writing a story."
