He had to get answers before he dove headfirst into the potentially worst idea he’d ever allowed himself to desire short of… well. There were ideas worse than approaching Heliodira with his one hope of doing something good. It made him very nearly sick with anxiety at what the reaction might be, but he sent a message to the man anyhow, asking if they might meet so he could ask a few questions. Just a few questions, then, regardless of what came next he could have written down whatever answers he might or might not get He’d never felt so mixed about having saved the emails regarding that house tour that was, more or less a cross between fascinating and disastrous. shibrogane Sorry I got so excited about the other I never made this one but...so im sorta stuffing it in

Renard agreed to the meeting, and met Zac at one of the quiet little shoreside art galleries in Salem. He was dressed well for the weather, his long limbs showing his tattoos. Between his wrists and the cuffed sleeves of his shirt there was nothing of his dark skin visible beneath the subtle, restrained colors. "You said you had questions, Mr. Bantock?" His manner was cool, expression bland.

He glanced at the arms, the delicate interplay of colors that concealed skin, and tried not to think too hard on the tone. “… Those paintings. The ones in the house…” he took a breath and let it out, trying to steel himself. “I know you have more, I’d very much like it if you’d tell me about them. Who they are –actually- of, or if they mean anything… sir.” He braced himself for the response. It was anxiety, or…just body language telling him to ‘brace for impact’.

Renard's finely sculpted eyebrows rose, and he said, "Is there a reason you're interested in the work of Mr. Prividaniye?" He listed away from the front windows, looking at the work on display. An assistant approached (after a short argument with someone else) and Renard waved her off. He'd make his purchase when he was ready to, and not a moment before. "He was a portraitist. He used natural colors where he could, though artificial were available to him and consistently cheaper. Are there any specific questions as to the meaning of the paintings? As far as I know, to him they represented a paycheck."

He was either going to sound crazy, or, being as the man lived in ‘Sunny’s’ house, he wasn’t. Only one way to find out. “B-Because two of the paintings that I got to see, they are, they are matches or near matches to people who are in this town –now. I… I talked to Sunny about one of them, and… I’m honestly not sure if there is any actual significance but it feels, important to me.”

"Surely you're familiar with twenty faces theory," said Renard. "And just as surely you know that people lie, Zachary. Even people you want to trust. Perhaps especially those you'd like to trust." He stopped in front of an abstracted piece. It might have been the view of a stormy beach through a rain-splattered windshield, or nothing at all. The point was the question. He looked down at Zac. "Sunny is sick in the head," he said, firmly. "She believes in magic when none exists. You'd do well to avoid her. "But you asked about Mr. Prividaniye's work. Yes, there are more pieces than just the three. Our collection sits at about ninety-four paintings, and perhaps fifty-two sketchbooks. That is all there is remaining; the rest were burned or sent back to his homeland, where they were later burned by the Soviets as homosexual propaganda." Renard tapped his fingers against his cuffed sleeves. "He was a close friend of William Ozymandias Shore. Some say he was like a son to the man, in fact. Others say they were lovers." Renard sneered at that theory. "I doubt it."

“The twenty faces theory is sound enough, but the probability of two of the ones I’ve seen matching people who live in the same town?” He glanced at his feet over what was said of Sunny though, if sunny was ‘Sick in the head’ this whole town was. “I’d love to study more about Mister Prividaniye, If nothing else I’d love to see the other paintings that you’ve taken such care to preserve. I’d love to know his story… you seem to know a great deal, and you seem rather sure about his Relationship with Mister Shore, It just seems like you could be the best instructor I could ask for on such remarkable at, likenesses aside.” “If, nothing else, would you mind if I asked if Mister Prividaniye… ever did a self portrait?, if he had any family?” There was a prickle at the back of his neck though he was trying not to show it. He’d made what he thought was a silly guess very early on after seeing the paintings, back when he thought that Jer was the only one who was shown there. But now he wasn’t sure that guess had been so silly.

"Mathematically plausible," said Renard. He looked down at Zac again, turning his attention from the displays of avant-garde paintings. "If you would like to come by the house," he said, "I'd be willing to show you what we have. It might take some time, Mr. Bantock. I'd bring water, or a friend."

There -was- a tremendous temptation, general anxiety and honest surprise asside, to make a math joke about 'plausible' vs probable. For better or worse he opted against it. "If I opted to bring a friend, AND water...would that be pushing the bounds of good social graces?"

"Hardly," said Renard. "It would only be pushing good graces if you didn't share." Was that... humor?

He gave a soft laugh, short and a little startled but nodded. “Not sharing would be a gross breach of etiquette.” He agreed. “I’ll um, I can send you a new email and we can schedule a time?” He offered. “And a choice of beverages you’d like as well.” He offered with a cautious smile.

"Of course," said Renard. "Feel free to let me know if you'll be bringing a friend as well."

"Of course." He nodded. "I'll make sure you're alright with them." He offered. It was after all, only polite.
