The night was quiet, almost too quiet. But, Sabine refused to let herself be caged by her own fear. The night was warm, but she honestly barely felt it, the muggy air broken by a light breeze as she stood on the top of the building, looking out into the night as she let out a small sigh. She had faced her fear and called Delilah's cousin, and he had taught her some things, and had all but promised more lessons to come.

Two weeks couldn't pass fast enough.

Still, she was mindful of her surroundings, the night was dark and full of danger still. Her fingers clutched the "unicorn" horn that Caedus had gifted her what felt like ages ago. It was a totem in a way... to ward off the chill that crept up her spine every now and then. The feeling that made her stomach roil and want to be sick.

She was a survivor... And she would fight to continue to be so. The Negaverse were still out for blood, and to a degree she could not blame them. But she stood by her choices, good and bad.

Which was why she was out tonight on patrol. Even alone... She had to trust that she could still do this. She just had to.

Summer nights were usually lazy nights. Nights for grabbing beers--unless he was at the Cross', in which case uh... plan B--kicking back, watching whatever sports were on, or just chilling with people. Summer nights made him feel lazy.

Yet there Seraphinite was, not Jericho, jacket's buttons mostly undone and sleeves rolled up a bit. The muggy air did not agree with his uniform, that was for damn sure. He'd mostly just been gathering energy that night, from other lazy summer evening enjoyers. Nothing fatal, but a few would be regretting the "amount" they'd drank come the following morning.

Maybe tomorrow night he could get more, he mused, if the weather wasn't so... lazy-inviting.

Inviting enough that he'd considered just walking around the Order aura he felt. He was down on the streets, wandering between the buildings, catching people in the alleys. He'd felt the aura for a while, milling around it, aware after a while of wandering that the person had to be up and not there on the ground with him. He'd really considered not going.

Yet something drove him up the buildings. Slowly, lazily. A rooftop away from the epicenter, he spotted the red and white figure. Small, figure. But a figure he recognized. It wasn't blood thirst or anything of the sort that drove him forward, hands down at his side, not resting on his weapons. It was... boredom, if anything. Lazy weather and lack of reason for intent.

She'd been one of those that had invaded. Had endangered injured soldiers. Helped them out, yes. But endangered them in the first place by even being there. Been one of those that were responsible for many of their starseeds caches being depleted. He hadn't been on the hunt for more to fill quotas.

"Bit surprised you've managed to last this long." Wars aren't made for bleeding hearts.

The fact the the Chaos aura had not charged her head on was... confusing in its own way. Still, Sabine had not abandoned her post, though she had been tempted to go after it. She was content in that moment, to live-and-let-live. If the owner of the aura didn't want to bother her, then she would not bother them. An unspoken truce.

But sure enough, the nature of the beast showed itself, and the aura drew closer, and closer... until finally she turned to face the owner and she looked into the eyes of the individual who had prompted her to seek out her tutor in the first place.

Her face did not fall, her eyes did not widen in shock, even as she felt the bile rise in her throat and her stomach wanted to heave its contents onto the roof as the panic began to set in. But she bit it back as best as she could.

"You should never question a woman's resolve," Sabine said, her voice flat. "I'm made of stronger stuff than you think."

She remembered her teacher's words, and she did not take a combat stance. She was harmless, she couldn't hurt him. Obviously she was a silly little girl and in over her head. But her eyes met his, and there was still some steel to them. She would not back down.

He'd told her to grow the ******** up last time. The look in her eyes... certainly held an edge of that. Calling herself a woman, though... Seraphinite gave a dismissive snort. "You ain't a woman, kid. Not yet. Hell of a lot more growing up before you can call yourself that."

She was still a kid. Younger than him. Still a kid. Sure as ******** not a full grown woman. If he was willing to diss himself out loud, he'd point out she's as much of a full grown woman as he was a full grown man. As it was. That wasn't his sort of tactic in speech.

His arms crossed over his chest, near white eyes in heavy contrast to his dark skin and hair as he watched her. "Credit where it's due. You are made of stronger stuff than I figured last time." His head inclined, ever so slightly. Recognition where earned, an admission of fault where evident. Might makes right. It was his only real code, only real motto in life. The kid was hardly a top predator, but she at least had enough of something to keep herself alive this long. More than some could say.

Lots, actually, in this war.

No, she was just a kid. A kid in way, way over her head with this war. But at least she'd thus far gotten farther than others.

Sabine told herself she would not puff her cheeks in frustration. She would not give into the the tantrum that was brewing that would only prove his point. She was a woman, in every definition of the word. Tilting her chin upward, she kept her gaze on him, teeth clenched slightly in her frustration.

How dare he dismiss her so out of hand. She didn't even think, she just moved. Her boots making heavy, solid sounds against the roof as she stomped her way over, fingers balled into firsts as she reached him, and poked him hard in the chest.

"You don't know what I've seen," She said with a hiss of anger, her finger once more poking hard on his chest to make her point. "You didn't see the fire, or the blood, or those poor people dying."

Her eyes narrowed and she poked his chest one more time. "You must feel pretty damn proud, wearing this Negaverse Uniform, knowing you can just reach into someone and pull out their soul, huh? You think you're some sort of invincible monster but you're NOT! You're a bully and a brat who feeds on the good of others." Her hand balled into a fist again.

"You're not better than any murder on the street..." She hissed out in anger as her fist flew toward his nose.

If she'd been anywhere near mature as she claimed, she wouldn't have stormed her way over to him like this. Seraphinite stood his ground, his expression more amused than anything as she... effectively proved her point. And clearly didn't even bother to acknowledge what credit he did give her.

"You've seen same s**t a lot of us have seen," he stated simply. He saw the General Queens ripping people to shreds. He's seen people die at his hand, and the hands of others. He's seen monsters in the creature true terms, and the monsters that sit in human skin. He saw what his father did to his mother. Didn't see him lording that over other people for pity or street cred.

The tiny finger poking his chest made his brow furrow slightly, frown deepen in annoyance. He didn't move, each time she prodded him. His frame towered over her. He was still growing, still forming whatever build would eventually form a grown man. Broad shoulders didn't flinch or sway as she jabbed at him.

That she called him a monster, claimed he believed himself to be invincible, only continued to prove his point. A cynical smile formed, ever, ever so slightly, as she whined and called him a bully and a brat.

Her swing was well aimed.

Seraphinite's arm drew up quick enough to take the hit, a faint grunt at the impact and feeling of her magical power-enhanced strength hitting the bones of his forearm. His other arm was in a more defensive position over his middle, ready for more attempts at his body. Leaning his weight back on one leg, he kicked out at her shins. "When you're an actual woman and you've lived a bit more, you'll realize there's worse people than those like me."

The kick to her shins had her stumbling back. It hurt, but the pain was becoming almost normal now, that that worried her. It was not the worst injury she had obtained in the line of duty. But, it stung that her attack had not connected. She had not done as her mentor had said, she had not lured him into the trap and sprung it. Now she was on the losing side of this. The thought of running came to mind, but she knew he'd catch her quickly with his longer stride and greater speed.

She really wished her magic worked on herself.

"There are no monsters worse than you!" She hissed out. "Those that would see this world crumble."

Her eyes were fire as they gazed at him. She would not back down from this fight. She had tried to run before, but no more. She stood her ground, unsure if this would end in anything other than pain or death for her.

Gritting her teeth she watched his arms and legs, moving in toward him again she threw her first toward his solar-plexus, trying to hit that bundle of nerves that would give her a moment to run. Something, anything to give her a chance to live another day.

He'd kinda expected her to lash out against what he was saying. Typical temper tantrum, really. How dare she be wrong. How dare there be something worse than what she, in all her infinite wisdom, deemed the worst evil.

Yeah he'd done all that s**t himself so many times he lost count. Everyone did. He was tempted. Very, very tempted, to scoff about how he wasn't aware wanting the world to crumble was what it meant, when you wanted to make a world where parents didn't kill one another in front of their kids any more, or where parents didn't have to burry their kids any more. Where a city was actually safe to live, and a planet not infected by invasions and magical catastrophes.

It'd have been a waste of breath. His expression went blank, body tensing to brace itself for more of a fight. She wouldn't listen to whatever he said. She picked her bogeyman, and wouldn't believe anything else was worse than the monster she deemed the thing that lived in her dark closet.

He'd aimed a low fist towards her side, trying to knock her over, but he'd had to bend down a little to actually do that. Hey, it was that, or slam a fist against her skull. The movement on his part put him into an easy position for her own fist to hit home.

So far as where she could have hit, he was relatively lucky.

The kid's fist knocked the air out of him, chest going tight as sparks of light popped and fizzed in his vision. His eyes clenched shut and he at least managed to stumble back a bit before he hit the deck, coughing shallow and trying to get his air back. Stupid on his part, he should have been guarding his body more. The human body has a surprising number of weak spots, really. In a minor act of defense, he pulled one of his wooden swords to his hand, holding it sideways in front of him to act as at least a minor shield if she tried her luck. They were hardly useful weapons, but now and then they could at least be of... some.... vague sort of use.

Sabine watched him stumble back, quite glad that her hit had made its mark and she managed to put him on the ground. But to see him pull his weapon out, a... rather weak looking wooden sword that was little more than a toy, and hold it out in defense himself... it made her heart sink into her feet.

This was not.... This was not was she was meant to be doing. This was not how one pursued peace.

Phact would be so disappointed in her. Arthur, would be disappointed in her... Kastra would be aghast at her behavior let alone her actions.

She felt that tightness in her chest that she knew would only lead to tears and shook her head, she could... she could press her advantage and end this.

Instead she felt the heat start to well in her eyes and she spun, away from her downed foe and she felt her legs carry her away as quickly as they could.

She couldn't... she couldn't do this. She couldn't be a monster like they were she couldn't... She... She needed to get away, to think.

To breathe.

He was never, never letting Captains Jet and Aquamarine know about this s**t. It would be one of the things he'd keep tucked away, a damn pathetic secret that like hell was he letting them on. Getting his a** kicked by a kid not only way smaller, but definitely younger than him was not something he was about to share.

Seraphinite gave a coughing cuss as the girl actually... turned away. He was actually... surprised. All her screaming he was a monster. Wasn't it her job then, to destroy monsters like him? Wasn't that how her perfect idealized view of herself and the world, that perfect black and white, worked?

She didn't say anything. He didn't either. The toy sword was lowered, and he watched with a mostly blank face as she ran away. Didn't shout after her, didn't curse her or plot to find her again and pay her back. They'd likely cross paths, as it was. Big of a city as it was, wasn't that big to avoid running into others on opposite sides.

Oh he cussed as his air came back, breathing heavy and groaning at the hit. Could have been worse. Way worse. But his pride burned, and he rubbed his face after a bit. ******** hell...

He needed to evaluate his options for who the ******** he actually considered competent combatants to give him some new pointers and training.
