Shimmer let the smile slip from her face as her herdmate Ion's adorable little foal, Coral, gallopped back towards his father, happily carrying the small toy that she had helped him make. The young one had thanked her profusely, and was such a dear to her, but somehow being around him seemed to fill her with a sense of melancholy that sprung from deep within her.
She really didn't understand it; she genuinely liked Coral, and liked spending time with him, and liked seeing him happy. She was happy for Ion, having had such a sweet foal – three foals, in fact! – with such a pretty mare. Even if she did miss him and Coral when they went to visit their family. The beach wasn't so terribly far away, really, but did they have to spend such a very long time away? Well, it was for the best, she supposed. Foals should know both their father and their mother, not just one or the other.
Sighing, Shimmer got up, deciding that she didn't want to think about it anymore, and picked up a basket. She then walked, and most definitely did not plod, over to the edge of the forest near their home, intending to pick some berries to share with everyone that evening. Even if it didn't cheer her up, at least it would brighten everyone else's day.

It had not escaped Titania's attention that her dear daughter was looking rather unhappy. Now, showing unhappiness from time to time was perfectly normal, Titania knew. But accompanied by the general ill content and pensiveness that Shimmer had been expressing of late, Titania suspected that it was more than just a passing bad mood. Titania observed her daughter carefully and surreptitiously, but for her very existence could not seem to discern the problem. Certainly, it centered around Ion and little Coral, but as for the specifics . . . Titania may have been a unicorn with excellent intuition, but a mind reader she was not.
She did, however, have some ideas. Seeing that Coral had just flitted off back to his father after playing with Shimmer, Titania decided that this was as good as any moment to approach her daughter. Mind thus made up, she followed Shimmer, quickly picking up her own basket on the way as she noticed where the younger mare was headed. Catching up, Titania sidled up to her, mindful of her steps and careful not to startle her.
“Shimmer dear, I saw you were off to pick some berries, and thought I'd join you,” Titania smiled gently. “And we can talk. It's been awhile since we've had a good mother-daughter chat, hasn't it?”

Long since having grown used to her mother's quiet steps, Shimmer appreciated that she wasn't as quiet as she could have been when she approached. Lost in thought as she was, Shimmer was pretty sure that she would have jumped or squeaked or dropped her berry basket, otherwise. Not that she was making a lot of progress on the berry picking front. Well, she'd only just arrived at the berry patch, hadn't she?
Shimmer turned to see Titania trailing closer with her own small berry-picking basket in tow. "Oh! Of course, there are plenty of berries to pick!" She replied, smiling and trying to to fidget. She found Titania a comforting presence, but at the same time, was not sure that she wanted to be the focus of her mother's keen insight and often blunt words. Or even worse, her concern. Shimmer hated to worry her mother over nothing, and whatever it was that was bothering her certainly was nothing, since she herself couldn't even figure out what it was!
"But I'm not sure what you'd want to talk about, really. Everything has been going so well lately. I mean, we had a lovely spring, and everyone has been getting along, and our herd is shaping up to be an actual herd, and we have those two new members from the valley and Ion's son, and . . . everything." She finished lamely.

Titania's mouth quirked up in a smile. "You're babbling, my dear," she replied amusedly, coming close enough to affectionately nudge shoulders with her daughter. "And why ever would you think that I want to talk about problems or bad things with you? Can't a mother and her daughter just chat sometimes?" She replied teasingly, meeting her daughter's eyes reassuringly.
Of course, Titania knew the answer to that; she and Shimmer had casual conversations all the time, and she did with her son as well. They were a small herd, with members often going off on their own for indeterminate stretches, but nonetheless they were a close herd. The fact that Shimmer's mind had immediately gone to problems, and making assuring statements that there were none and so what else could there be to talk about, spoke volumes to Titania.
But the question remained: what could be bothering Shimmer? She really was right in that things were going quite well for them lately. Could she be upset about Ion having a relationship -- however platonic it had become -- with someone outside the herd? Or feeling wistful about having foals again, because of Coral's presence? It had been a long time, after all.
Plucking some berries into her basket, and landing a few in Shimmer's as well for encouragement, Titania waited patiently for her daughter's answer. It was a bit cute, she had to admit, how Shimmer got flustered about things, but that was best left for trivial matters. And this was not something that Titania knew to be trivial.
