It was a hot night, and most sane people were inside where they could be in the AC. Fortuna however was on patrol duty and was just going to have to suffer in it. It had rained during the day which left a muggy cloud over the city and stifled sound and breath. She hoped for a breeze or anything to break the heat of the late evening.

As she walked Fortuna went over in her head the lessons she had learned from Remarque about her magic, it might come in handy on patrol, even if she did prefer to fight with her fists rather than with her ability. Remarque had seemed satisfied with her knowledge of her abilities so far so all Fortuna could do was wait and see if she could use them in a real life situation.

So far everything had been quiet and she walked with a steady pace and observed her surroundings with an easy awareness. She did not come in contact with anyone so far and maybe that was for the best, she had a lot on her mind regarding her family she almost hoped that it would be an easy night for her so Fortuna could go home and get some rest before her hectic day started all over again.

Newgrange was minding his own business, as he usually was. He wasn’t out to cause trouble, despite how often he actually found himself getting into it. But things had been calm lately. He hadn’t come home with bumps or bruises, wasn’t having n existential crisis (or much of one, anyway).

He was just around, not up to too terribly much. Patrolling to make the world a better place, trying to clean up the streets some.

A tingle on his radar was enough to have him change directions; he hadn’t felt a Dark Mirror Senshi in a long time—and couldn’t help but wonder what one was doing out. His concern was mostly with the Negaverse, a very valid and real threat. Slowly, he made his way over towards the energy signature and strained his eyes to see where the signature was coming from.

“Hello?” he prompted into the darkness, figuring there wasn’t really a reason to be strangers.

He just hoped they weren’t enemies.

The voice caught Fortuna’s attention before the energy signature did and she jumped. Glancing around Fortuna spotted the speaker and he seemed to be an order aligned knight, if her training from Remarque was correct. She wrestled with herself for a moment about speaking or staying silent, staying or running.

Finally she stepped from the darkness with what she hoped was confidence and faced the Knight. “Evening.” She said simply.
Her dark skirts fluttered around her legs in a sudden breeze and her hair stayed wonderfully in place in her braid as it never would in her civilian form. Despite her panicky insides she projected a façade of calm and confidence seeming neither troubled nor concerned at their meeting.

Fortuna wasn’t really sure what the procedure was supposed to be for meeting order aligned people, but she didn’t feel she had to be openly hostile at a first meeting. Like her preferred fighting style Fortuna liked to be reactive to attacks directed at her so she wasn’t harmed but didn’t do unnecessary damage to her opponent.

“Oh,” Newgrange said, sounding a bit surprised. “There you are. Hi. I haven’t met many Dark Mirror Senshi, so I suppose I’ve wandered over here with a bit of curiosity. I’m not intruding on anything, I hope?” he said—and honestly sounded hopeful. He wasn’t making any move to attack, but seemed a bit on edge regardless.

Just because he didn’t have any intention of attacking didn’t mean she didn’t, and he’d made the mistake of trusting people plenty of times before.

Not enough times to learn his lesson, though; he extended a hand to her hesitantly and introduced, “I’m Newgrange, Squire of Earth. It’s nice to make your acquaintance.”

Fortuna watched the squire cautiously, she did not have experience with knights and didn’t know what their motivations would be. “I haven’t met many Knights.” She replied easily. “Well, none actually, I’ve been… out of town for a while.” Fortuna added. While she was trying to remain friendly she was also cautious of anyone who was order aligned.

Despite the fact that she was focused on the conversation, and the threat in front of her, she was also vigilant of her surroundings, it would be pretty dumb to be so distracted by something in front of her, that she missed something else creeping up behind her.

Fortuna was a little taken aback by his introductions, but having not met many other people when she was out in about she didn’t know if it was a customary greeting when two possible foes met.

“And I am Fortuna, Dark Mirror Senshi of Gambling.” She added in an attempt at politeness. She reserved judgement of whether their meeting would be nice or not.

Newgrange nodded quickly, and offered a warm smile. “Then, it is a pleasure, Fortuna. I have to admit, I am happier to see a Dark Mirror Senshi than I am a Negaverse Agent. I’ve not had the best of luck with them,” he said, clearing his throat before standing a little taller.

“But I suppose that’s neither here nor there. Truth be told, I know next to nothing about your faction. Your members are incredibly elusive.” There was a faint pinging on his radar—something foggy, and familiar, but unpleasant. He tried to push it from his mind so he could focus on her without being entirely oblivious to his surroundings in case he was getting into trouble.

“I haven’t had any experience with the Negaverse.” Fortuna responded with a shrug. Supposedly they were of the same alignment, but she would have to remember to talk to Remarque about whether or not they actually got along together or what that situation was.

“Well, there is one more Dark Mirror Senshi back in town.” Fortuna responded easily, she hoped that she would do her court justice. “And I plan on sticking around this time.”

Suddenly she felt a tingling at the back of her mind and she tilted her head, it was vaguely familiar, and she felt like she should place it, but it had been so long since she had been powered up she didn’t know what she was sensing anymore, only that it wasn’t friendly.

“What brings you out on this miserable evening?” Fortuna questioned gesturing around her to indicate the muggy air.

Newgrange nodded, apparently in some sort of agreement. He didn't seem to be concerned with another Dark Mirror Senshi sticking around--but then again, he really didn't know much about them. He hadn't been attacked by one--not really. And they certainly weren't the things of nightmares.

They were just senshi who wore different colors and...apparently occasionally drained energy.

He had intended to make some friendly conversation, but he seemed aware of the tingling she felt as well. He was looking just over her shoulder and nodded towards something that stood behind her.

"That."

A youma, ugly and tall, seemed to have become interested in the two of them. It stood like a horse, though had the hind legs of a bird, a strange, hooked tail, and two sets of large antlers.

When it snorted, steam blew in a puff from its nostrils. The youma began to paw at the ground--apparently ready to charge.

"...You might....want to move," he said quietly, tying not to alarm the youma. "...I don't think it likes me very much. You, ah...you don't have a soft spot for youma, do you? Because I'm thinking, you know, it might be nice to have a little help. If you're interested."

Ever so carefully Fortuna pivoted on the balls of her feet so that she was facing the new threat. "I think it would have been better to stay home..." Fortuna mused softly as she took in the hulking Youma in front of her and sneered.

"Definitely do not have a soft spot for them, a snake tried to eat me once." She responded with a shrug. "Fortunately I had someone to help me, so I figure now is a good time to pass on that little Karma." Fortuna added as she shifted her weight slowly into a balanced fighting stance as she brought to mind her magic and all that Remarque had taught her.

"I don't know what Knights can do, so what is the best way to work together without accidentally hitting each other?" she questioned evenly, keeping her gaze on the Youma.

"I'll stay out of your way, just let me know if you're using your magic and I'll get out of your way. I fight with my fists," he said. "....My magic doesn't do much more than shake up the ground, but if it comes to that I'll let you know to clear out a bit."

More time for strategy would have been ideal, but it didn't seem like the youma was going to let them figure things out; with a guttural bellow, it pawed at the ground once more and then charged.

The downside to speed and strength was that it had a difficult time controlling its trajectory; Newgrange was able to easily side step the youma--and hurl a fist into its shoulder. On its own, it didn't seem to do much damage, but that was the key with youma.

One blow would be the right blow, and sometimes you never knew which hit was going to be the final one.

Fortuna pivoted when the youma ran past her and continued her motion into a kick into the youma's side. It didn't seem to do much damage but with enough blows perhaps they could beat it.

After it charged past her Fortuna focused on her magic and raised her crossed wrists above her head and brought it down calling out "Loaded dice." She felt her magic take hold and cast towards the youma giving it overconfidence and recklessness.

She felt her energy drop with the casting of her magic but settled herself down and prepared for the next attack.

"I would have rather have been targeted with this spell, I don't know how Youma's react to this type of thing."

Newgrange's eyes flashed in slight horror, concerned that she gave the creature a boost. "Oh," he said, and laughed slightly. It was an awkward, somewhat forced laugh, but he nodded. "Well, ah...I guess now is as good a time as any to find out, right?"

The youma was already turning around, irritated about being hit. It's eyes flashed between the two of them and it no longer seemed able to differentiate which one was order and which was chaos--if ever it mattered, anyway.

With another enraged roar, and fueled now by the burst of confidence from Fortuna, it charged between the two, throwing it's head from side to side as if it intended to gore each of them as it ran past. It's bravado was a boost to them, instead; the youma was so distracted that it missed each of them--and instead impaled its massive antlers into a tree.

It shuddered, angry, but still overconfident, and began to tug. Slightly, it began to loosen itself--but now was their chance to strike with little fear of repercussion.

"Watch for its legs," Newgrange instructed, but ran towards the youma with another punch, trying to find some weakness. The creature didn't seem to feel any pain, but was certainly agitated and roared as it tried to free itself.

An unintentional peal of laughter came from Fortuna's throat as the creature barreled past them and ran into the tree. She did not let this laughter keep her from attacking however.

Avoiding the flailing legs Fortuna threw some quick jabs followed by another round house kick. She was careful to only attack while it was still stuck, she did not like what it did to the tree, and what it could do to her if it managed to land a blow.

She kept Newgrange on her left and was careful to avoid hitting him but also did not fully trust him to not attack her while distracted.

For a while, it seemed like none of the damage they were doing was affecting the youma—and then all of a sudden a part of it seemed to crack. It wasn't like a bone cracking, or a mirror fracturing; instead, it was a strange, hollow echoing—and even as the youma reared to attack again, its foot slid from beneath it and it collapsed into a pile of dust before them.

Newgrange wasn't quite out of breath, but he was breathing quickly; his arm was pulled back as if he were preparing for another punch, but when he realized the youma was taken care of he just lowered the limb.

He looked at her, as if double checking that the creature was taken care of, and then cautiously just shrugged.

"That one…wasn't so bad. Not the worst I've fought. No doubt to you, certainly. Thank you."

Fortuna was about to land another round house kick when suddenly there wasn't anything there, the momentum carried her forward however when she tried to stop herself she slipped in some youma dust and stumbled and fell into Newgrange, fortunately for him it was just her body that ran into him, and not a completed kick.

"Ah... yeah sorry about that." she said disentangling herself from him with a slight blush. "I wasn't expecting it to go down that quickly. To be fair it is the first Youma I have fought rather than just being whisked away as a civilian." Fortuna added as she took a step back and brushed off her skirt and some youma dust off of her shoulder.

"Um yeah sure... any time?" she said without thinking and then winced since they were technically on different sides and were supposed to be enemies. But how do you be an enemy to someone you share life experiences with like fighting crazed chaos beasts?
