It was just another day, nothing out of the ordinary. Skylar had done his usual morning routine for getting ready for classes. Basically he had brushed his hair precisely ten times, brushed his teeth, gotten dressed, and packed his bookbag just right so that everything fit perfectly. Today was going to be a good day. Well, he didn't really know that, but still. Skylar toddled off to class, clutching his backpack and eyeing everyone that passed him. A few times on his trek to class he paused to write in his notebook about the interesting people he saw. Today it was another hyrbid that seemed to be pumping themself for the day by saying really nice things to their reflection in a mirror on the wall. He briefly thought about trying that for himself, but decided he wasn't the character type to do that. He finally got to his classroom and sat down in his assigned seat.

Moments passed and the other students filtered in and then a substitute teacher made their way in. At the moment he thought nothing of it, there was nothing to trouble himself over. Class proceeded on time as per usual, it went as it normally did, he took as many notes as he could before his hand started to cramped. There was almost fourty-five minutes of class left and the teacher started talking about pairing people up. Skylar didn't even bother to look up, surely his teacher had left a note about him being exempt from group work. Then it happened. He heard the teacher say his name and pause. Wait. No. She wasn't about to put him with someone, right? WRONG.

Apparently his partner was someone named River. He didn't even know who that was! How was he supposed to work with them? He debated bringing up that he didn't work with people. That meant him addressing the teacher in front of everyone though...hard pass on that. For the first time in a long time he looked up from his notebook and glanced around. So many unfamiliar faces...he watched as all the other kids got in their groups. Finally there was only one lone person left. He walked over to the girl in question and nodded before sitting down next to her, pulling his notebook back out and flipping it open to the notes he had taken that day. "I have written down all the important things from today, we're supposed to make a collage about..." He paused trying to think about the topic, "Friendship and what it means to us..."

This was going to be harder than he thought.

Either the other student had been driven insane by River's lack of verbal responses, or she had dragged them into trouble. Eventually, this meant River was not paired with another student for awhile, and she had begun to expect that she'd never be paired with someone until she moved up a grade. Then, a substitute arrived, and she was proven wrong.

Skylar. She knew who they were. In fact, River knew the names of every student she attended classes with. Why? She needed to analyze who would be most helpful for her experiments. Yet, Skylar had never been promising. He wasn't useful enough. He wasn't a team player. Neither was River, but she needed someone cooperative to include in her creations. She hadn't glanced at him since the day she learned his name, but here he was, her partner. Someone she was sure would grow irritated with her within five seconds.

She tugged her notebook closer to her as Skylar noticed her, finally, and came over. Her eyes flicked over her notes briefly before she nodded at his arrival, head raising to fully view him. Friendship, right. A collage. She could do that, though she was sure the teacher wouldn't be impressed with what friendship meant to her.

"Yes." She confirmed. He was right. For a second, just a brief, ridiculous second, River remembered something about naga's. Poison. They were immune to most poisons, and could make their own. Skylar had reminded her of that. Maybe her next experiment could be training the body to resist poison's, like a naga? Though, she doubted the school would let her acquire the necessary materials for that...

Work, River. She had classwork to do. Mentally shaking away her thoughts, River returned her gaze to their notebooks, nodding faintly.

"What does friendship mean to you, then?" Ah, yes, it was time to collect notes. Surely they'd say something like 'friendship means happiness' or something similar, right?

In all honestly though, what did friendship mean to him? He really didn't have any friends and he was actually okay with that. He really just liked to observe things and see how people reacted to certain situations and stimuli. Mainly because he realized he didn't have the same reactions to things as others did, so he was trying to understand what was "normal". He paused again, flipping through his notes hoping that he could find something about friendship in general. Nothing. There was diddly squat about friends.

"Friendship is...confusing. I believe it's something that people want because they feel like they have to have friends to be 'normal'. I...do not understand the feeling." The substitiute came by and dropped off magazines for everyone so they could cut pictures out and make their collage. "Even though I do not understand this relationship, I think we might be able to put together something good. I have done enough studies on friendship to know what it looks like." Skylar grabbed one of the magazines and began flipping through it. He stopped when he got to a page with two girls sitting next to each other how looked to be laughing together. "You see, this is a good image of this 'friendship'"

It was refreshing to be partnered with someone that didn't want to talk his ears off. However, it was still weird to be partnered with anyone at all. Adaptation. He had read about it, perhaps it was something he would have to research further.

She didn't understand it, frankly, and it troubled her. She understood quite a lot, especially for someone her age. Yet, something as small and trivial as friendship was what caught her off-guard. She didn't comprehend why people sought it so dearly, or felt so empty without it. Sure, she observed the relationship from a distance and understood what the word meant, but it was the feeling that evaded her. Why was company so needed? She never had a friend, and she had been fine. Yes, she needed other students to test her experiments, but that wasn't a requirement. She could equally find a way to do it herself, it would just take longer, and perhaps limit her ability to do so again if she injured herself.

The magazine was opened and River observed it, nodding faintly. Yes, that looked like friendship. Or love, but that was also a concept she didn't understand. What was the difference between love and friendship? Ah, this was all too confusing.

"I agree." She confirmed, dragging a magazine over and flipping through until she paused, pushing a picture of a demon playing with a vespercat. "What I have been exposed to is that friendships are not limited to people. It can be between an animal and person. Should we include this?" The quiet litch looked up, blank eyes glancing between Skylar's picture and their own.

His partner's conclusion on the matter of friendship made him stop and think for a moment. Could friendship really not be limited? Skylar sat there, a puzzled look contorting his delicate features. "I see. So friendship is a connection some one feels to something else. If it is not limited to other people could friendship even be something like the comfort that one finds in a book or research?" He paused again, trying his best to picture what friendship 'meant to him.'

Quickly he flipped a few pages into the magazine. The hybrid stopped on a page that had a picture of a man smiling at a cell phone. Could that be friendship as well? He sure looked like he was enjoying the company of the electronic device.

"It seems as we're not very familiar with this topic. I do not believe this and I feel like friendship is different for everyone. Maybe there are no wrong answers to this question?" He pointed at the image of the man and his phone. "Perhaps this is friendship in his eyes. Maybe he is talking to someone on the phone or maybe someone sent him a joke. Should we include things like this too?" He pulled out his notebook and starting scribbling things about friendship...many of which had multiple question marks next to them.

This caught her off-guard, but logic slipped through her head. Maybe he was smiling at a text from a friend? Another, slight ridiculous idea crossed her mind; what if his friend turned into a phone? Don't be stupid, River. That wasn't possible.

....Or was it?

NO, this was not time for an experiment. She had to figure out this strange subject that solely relied on emotions. Tilting her head as Skylar spoke, she drifted her gaze back to their magazines. There could be no wrong answer, he was right. It seemed one of those topics that just had far too many answers, and if you didn't understand it then, tough, you weren't going to.

"Yes." She finally responded with, nodding faintly. "If we include as many things we believe relate to friendship, we must get it right somewhere."

He was glad that his partner agreed with them. It seemed to him that neither one of them were very versed in the practice of friendship, but between the two of them they had to get it right somewhere. Skylar began flipping through the magazine furiously, trying to figure out what could constitute as friendship.

He furrowed his brows before cutting out everything that he could. A picture of someone smiling while eating a burger, an advertisement that had two animals sitting next to each other, anything and everything.

"River, do you believe that someone could be friends with the food they're eating?" He held up the clipping of the very happy looking person chowing down on the burger. "For example, this person looks very enthused about this food. Would that be friendship or would that just be hunger?"

Gently he pushed some of the magazines out of the way and wrote 'Friendship' on the top of a piece of paper and wrote his name in the corner. Methodically he began placing the clippings on the paper to see if he could spot any differences between the things he had found and maybe eliminate some of the more ridiculous images.

An eyebrow quirked at the question, eyes locking on the image before, with a calculated head shake, she responded.

"I do not think we'd eat our friends, because then they'd be dead." She paused, thoughtfully frowning before, again, shaking her head. "I think that is hunger, perhaps even happiness to have consumed said sandwich." Watching her partner, she offered her own clippings; ones of vespercats sitting in laps, people holding hands, children cuddling parent, and two wisps encircling one another.

"Then again," She paused, thoughtfully running her thoughts over one last time. "If one could bring food sentience, perhaps a friendship could be created." No, River. Don't think that way. Already she was considering how to make food talk.
