Sometimes he missed the relaxed nights high above the city in his tower, looking down over the little lights that made up the hives that made up Chittentown. He had been a major a*****e back then, he still sort of was one, but he hadn't been able to deny how inspiring it was to see so many visionaries at work in one of Alternia's greatest creative communities. Chittentown lacked the beetles to make all of the wonders dreamed of in it but all of the other stuff was there. Great minds collected there, of all colors, and the proof of it all was in the abandoned tunnels that used to be the Phoenix Initiative's hideout. Good things started in the desert. So it felt weird to be here, slogging through the watery swamp and batting flies away with a practice sword.
"Keep alert and watch your stance." Cerpin murmured to himself, going over last week's teachings from Keionx in his mind. The village here had a mismatch of mentors and allies but it could be hard to find them. There was always something important to be doing at the Salamire Outpost from repairing rope bridges to gathering food to constructing new buildings. He'd come over the mountain pass in hopes of visiting Forera again, this time with a small gift to cheer her up while she passed the time working as a lookout. It had to get maddeningly lonely up there.
Was it just his imagination or was something following him? The boy drew close to a tree for cover. As cool as he tried to act, there was a trauma tied to this place that he would never completely shrug off as long as he was here. A scream that echoed after a long panicked night running away from gunshots and cave-ins. Was it friend or foe tracking him right now?
Well, whoever it was knew the area too well for it to be an outsider.
"That you, Rera? Or is it Keionx?" He peered out from his hiding place with a relaxed grin on his face but his hands still in position around his sword. If it was his master, after all, he'd try to sneak a hit on her!
Sometimes teachers got pop quizzes too after all!
