Imp spots it, actually, as he flies a tight circle above the sea-cliffs in Waite State Forest. Even shrike-like vision and passerine strength can't get to it; it requires human dexterity, human opposable thumbs. Maybe it would've been smarter to call in the cavalry but for whatever reason, it's Rylan at the edge of the sea-cliffs. The sod here is too wet with recent rains to support any kind of significant camming: it's free-climb or bust.

As for what it is? Imp doesn't know, but with the body that was recently discovered... better safe than sorry.

Feel free to bring a friend! On my next post I will introduce your mysterious stranger ;3

"I know I didn't give many specifics," Rylan was saying as he stared up at the cliffs, head tilted toward the sky. "But thanks for coming."

Indeed, he still didn't have many specifics to give, other than that his plan involved scaling the damp, possibly mossy cliff with no real safety precautions in order to retrieve something that had caught his bird friend's eye. He was not convinced that this was the most sane of plans, but that was part of the fun.

"I'm going to climb it," he continued. "You don't have to. But mostly, I don't want to potentially die with no one around to bring my body back to my parents."

Thorne stared at the cliff. He wasn't necessarily sure how he'd gotten here. There had been a call, out of nowhere, and he'd been prepared for some very long-winded not-arguments or disappointed sighs, but instead he'd been offered -

To do something... crazy.

"They call it a buddy system for a reason," he retorted. "I'll make sure to drag your sad carcass back home if you fall. Assuming that I don't fall first."

He glanced at the firefighter out of the corner of his eye.

"And I need a spike of adrenaline once in awhile to keep me out of the house."

"Does it count against your style points if you use a bird to scout your path?" The speaker is a slight, dark-haired woman, her hair cut in a punkish bob. She's dressed unseasonably for the weather in a knitted fisherman's sweater and a zip-up hoodie that reads MIT. "I suppose it'd have limited application."

She joins the two men, peering up at the cliff. "Mind if I come along? I don't look like much, but I know what I'm about."

Rylan wasn't one for sighs or long-windedness. It had never occurred to him to do either, and indeed, he might never have even picked up the phone if it hadn't been for this sudden urge to... well. Do something crazy. Or stupid, depending on the point of view.

"With luck, nobody falls," he said with a nonchalant shrug. One could hope.

He was about to just go for it and get his a** on the cliff face when another, unfamiliar voice spoke up, and he turned with a slow frown to watch the woman he didn't recognize.

"How'd you know about the bird?" he said cautiously. Ever since the meeting with Sunny, he'd found himself looking at people and wondering how many of them were equally alien. Maybe this woman was too. "And why would you want to come?"

She fluttered her eyelashes at him. "C'mon. People are turning into wolverines on college campuses and you're concerned 'cause I know you're a warg? please." The young woman crossed her arms over her chest. "And I was asking to be polite. Don't want to get in your way if you're hell-bent on getting up there first, or whatever."

"One would hope being a warg is a little less noticeable than turning into a crazed animal in public," Rylan said with a small smile, shooting Thorne a sideways glance.

"And hey, the more the merrier. But first," he added. "Tell us who you are and why you want to get up there too."

If anything her mysterious appearance had confirmed that he hadn't been wrong about needing to figure out what Imp had found.

Thorne snorted. Luck? Since when did either of them have luck? He glanced at the cliff again. And then there was a girl, and a mention of wargs, and -

Rylan gave him a sideways glance and Thorne just shrugged, meeting his stare with an expression that said, your call. I'm just here for the adrenaline rush. After all, there really wasn't another reason he was here unless he had to drag the firefighters corpse back home. He'd been restless and irritated, and pounced on the first opportunity that offered something a little bit crazy that didn't require him to think about his life at all.

Thorne turned his eyes to the girl. "The more the merrier?" he offered mildly.

"I'm Viv," said Viv. "And yeah. It's slightly less noticeable. Not by much, though, how many people do you see shadowed by shrikes anyway?" She pointed upwards towards Imp.

She pulled her hoodie off and tied it around her waist. "I'm home for the summer and I want to climb the cliffs like I do every year. Like I said, I know what I'm doing. But if it's that big a deal, I'll come back another time."

"Maybe I'm just a Disney princess," Rylan said, more for his own benefit than anything else.

He tilted his head back to look up at the cliff again, wondering whether he should have called up Corra as well. This kind of thing seemed very much up his baby sister's alley, although it might just be stupid enough that she'd berate him for taking that sort of risk again.

As if their family didn't worry enough, what with his running into fires every now and again for the job.

So maybe he shouldn't have. Rylan swept his arms open, motioning to the cliff face. "Well. Show us how it's done, Viv."

What Viv thought about Rylan as a disney princess didn't make it out of her mouth. She was crouching to cross-tie her shoes, to make a pile of her neatly-folded fisherman's sweater and clip her hair back. "Thanks," she said, "Are you going up free solo? Or camming it? There's some chalk in the pocket of my sweater if you need it."

She didn't wait for an answer. Evidently she was free soloing, the muscles of her arms flexing as she hauled herself up to a new perch several feet above the ground. "Be sure to watch out for the growing things. They don't have good roots," she called down to the men below her. "Bad for grip."

On every turn, roll a 1d6: if you roll a 2, you fall. The object Imp spotted is three turns up; if you fall on the first turn, you're uninjured. Second turn you're jarred but alright. You can continue if you fall off on the first or second roll. Third turn, you break a bone (greenstick or compression fracture) and cannot continue.

"Climb on," Rylan said, exchanging another look with Thorne. If he was still puzzled by Viv's sudden, unexpected entrance, it showed.

They didn't have any cams, so there seemed to be no option but to free solo it. Rylan studied the cliff face and found what looked like a passable route to the left of Viv. He would have watched her climb for the beta, but that would've taken an amount of patience he didn't have at the moment.

"Here goes," he said to Thorne as he found a good handhold for the start. "Remember. Sad corpse. Parents."

Thorne shrugged, following them both to the cliff edge. He wasn't particularly blown away by Viv's sudden appearance or her knowing about the wargs - after all, what in Ashdown didn't have some bizarre twist to it? - so he let it drop. They would get to the top of a cliff first. And then maybe they'd ask more questions.

Or they'd die.

There were one of two ways this could go, after all.

"Corpses can be sad?" he deadpanned back at Rylan, scoffing. "I'll be running before the doorbell is done ringing, you know."

"Either of you considered going to the hospital," Viv called down as she groped one-handed for something along a long, thin split in the cliff face. "If one of you is dead? Or dying?" Finding it, she hauled herself a few feet over to a better grip, clearing the way for Cam and Thorne.

"What about a sad, broken corpse is not sad?" he said, swinging right to reach what looked like a pocket in which he could comfortably sit his hand and rest a moment before moving up.

"Nah, no hospitals," Rylan said to Viv, eyeing the crack she was using on her route. "I'd probably just set myself on fire and call it a day. Free cremation."

Which was a little morbid, considering the fact that he'd seen burned bodies before and they didn't usually become a neat pile of ashes like most people imagined they would.

But what could he say. Cas' sense of humor had rubbed off on him a little.
