She had come upon the flyer by chance. A dingy looking scrap of paper that had seen better days, left behind on one of the trains she'd taken the other night. On it, a postbox location and some contact information for a troll that promised skills with a gun and a proficiency for hunting. Hmph, she'd be the judge of that. Flydra could not deny that she was curious to see if this person was good enough to trust with protecting Lorata while they were running errands for her. Or maybe he'd prove to be pure entertainment, meant to make a fool out of. Either way, she was fine.

"Scorpa, you'll discipline him if he gets out of line?" What with the strange rebellion talk and whispers of dislike for the hemospectrum, one couldn't be too careful these nights. Flydra did not like sacrificing her friend to be the sole fighter but Scorpa simply was stronger than her and better suited to the task. They were on the outskirts of Chittentown by now, having walked through the dusty town per the yellowblood's directions. The duo had contacted one Buffel Obille two night prior to arrange a meeting location in the desert. The boy had better be on time.

"Once he gets here, the game begins." Buffel had been lured to the location with the promise of a hunting job tracking someone...

Chittentown was dirty in the bad way.

Scorpa disliked what it stood for, a safe haven for lowbloods to gather and sulk. The dry heat of the desert was unpleasant and there was dust everywhere. NHC was certainly dirty too but at least it was interesting. Out here there was nothing to see but sand and trash for nights. Plus it was where they lived. The girl rolled her eyes and walked alongside Flydra.

"I'll pound him!" The yellowblood laughed in response to her friend's question. Scorpa's version of discipline was very physical. She didn't know what to expect from this gunslinging handyman but she was prepared to beat him up if he tried anything. She didn't expect to have to though. The poster had suggested he was willing to do whatever so they probably wouldn't have any problems. She was tempted to put it to the test and see just where the line was. Flydra probably wouldn't care.

"What was his name again? Bufoon?" Scorpa snickered quietly to the tealblood. Normally she'd say the insult loudly to show her dominance but they had to act good at the start of this ruse. She'd better get her jokes and cracks out now before the last troll arrived.

"Think he's a quick shot?" Her thick ponytail shook as she giggled quietly with Flydra again. Okay this time she was done. At least until he got past step 3. Then it was a free for all!

But for now they waited.

Buffel was excited that such a gold mine of a contract was up for grabs today.

He had recieved word from two clients, Flydra Dromen and Scorpa Devile to meet them on the outskirts of Chittentown. He had prepped and cleaned everything her was wearing so as to make a proper impression on the ladies. Knowing it was across town, he had a quiet thought to himself as he knocked around the aranged meeting place at the edge of town. He had gotten contracts from outside the town before, but most came from within Chittentown. He tried his best to imagine what they were like.

They certainly seemed awful cordial in their letters, he remembered. He wondered if he’d cut a good figure to them, seein’ as he was just a kid. Not that he hid that fact from his flyers, but when one hires a gunslinger they normally don’t suppose that you’re just knee-high to a hoofbeast. He only knew enough to look for a tealblood and a yellowblood standing together near a certain point on the edge of town. He wondered how old they might be, as most of his contracts tended to lean towards an older sort.

Rounding a corner, he saw two young girls, a tealblood and yellowblood, quietly giggling to themselves. This must be them! Better go make proper acquaintances, he thought. Moseying up to them in a confident stance, Buffel introduced himself.

”Would you happen to be the Misses Devile and Dromen? The name’s Buffel Obille, gunslinger for hire. I read tell you had a hunting contract for me?”

Buffel extended his hand cordially for a hand-shake. They seem like fine folk! Don’t know what I was worried about before, I’ll be makin’ a great impression I’m sure.

"Good one, Scor." Giggling with Scorpa, Flydra was pleased with the lowblood's jokes and insults. She enjoyed the other girl's wit and what better way to use it than to pick on some unsuspecting fools? She poked at the ground with her shoes, tracing out a series of lines in the dirt until she realized it was dirtying up her pretty white shoes. Taking the other girl's arm, she smiled coolly as a boy made his way over. This seemed to be Buffel Obille, the grand hunter himself. She did not have high hopes after seeing how he was dressed. Wouldn't a giant poncho get in the way of whipping his gun around? But the tealblood supposed she had never used a weapon like that before. She'd watch and assess the practicality of it herself. It was something she enjoyed.

"That's correct. I am Flydra Dromen and this is Scorpa Devile." He assessed the situation accurately and the tealblood nodded in response. "We have a sensitive task for you. Scorpa's lusus, Pradapalps, has had three more children. One of them has gone missing and it's your task to find it." The boy extended his hand and she took it instinctively but not for reasons that he anticipated. Flydra drew a syringe from her bag and steered it straight for a vein. How lucky, most trolls weren't so open-minded. Perhaps there was hope for this one.

"Your job is to lead us to it. And we want to find it alive." The young scientist shared a look with Scorpa, one that was full of mischief as well as curiosity. Hopefully the boy was smart enough to realize- he would not be using his gun. What kind of foolishly stupid tricks would he have to try if he couldn't rely on the thing he was supposedly good at?

good luck lil buffel : P you can make up clues however you like, we don't mind! EDIT: Also you can decide if Buffel was successfully drained of a blood sample or if he deflected it, I'm fine either way!

As the syringe afixed itself into his vein, Buffel’s grip tightened on the highblood’s hand ever so slightly. Through clenched teeth from the unexpected sting he responded, ”Hnng! I-I can certainly do that, no casualties necessary. I uh... wha- er, why did- what just happened just there?!”

He rubbed his arm slightly as she let go of it. His left hand had instinctively rose to grab his gun but after the flinch it just rest firmly on it. Letting go, he listened to them while rethinking his opinion on the Flydra.

Just what in tarnation is this gal’s deal? Stabbin’ folk ain’t the way to start a contract! Maybe it’s, I don’t know... a cultural gap or some such? Realizing he’d been in his own head, he shook himself from his misgiving and stood at attention, listening intently to the conversation at hand.

Yamashii
Okey doke! And nah, his polite manners and survival reflexes are like two different sides of his brain lol.

Doutei
Good luck! I'm excited to see how Scorpa sizes up the little cowpoke.

"There isn't a problem, is there?" At Buffel's twitch, Scorpa's aggression activated. She voiced her question with an artificial warmth, the tone suggesting there better not be. The yellowblood moved to stand just slightly in front of Flydra, in case he finished drawing his gun. The tealblood trusted her to keep her safe.

"We want him alive, remember?" Her voice sang in a sweet nagging reminder, but to who? About her lusus's child or about Buffel himself? There wasn't much time to dwell on the question, however, as she was already walking to lead the way towards the desert. Part of her way of messing with people was to control the pace as much as possible- keep them scrambling to keep up.

"This is where we last saw him." Stopping besides what appeared to be a burrow of sorts, it was hard to see inside. Just what lurked in that underground tunnel? What would happen if you put your hand inside? Scorpa's smile offered no information about the safety of this place. She'd guided him here to see how competent the boy was at his job and what he would do. Letting him look around, she gave Flydra a sly look before returning her attention to Buffel in case he had any questions.

"You provided a donation that will help Alternia for years to come." Flydra's words were clearly some kind of script that she used commonly for this strange stab game. She tucked away the collected blood in a vial in her bag with a few others, some empty, some full. What she intended to do with the samples, she did not explain to him. Flydra had found explaining herself to the public in great detail tended to go over their heads and they did not understand her grand vision.

Looking down at the burrow that Scorpa had led them to, the tealblood nodded back to her partner in crime wordlessly. It seemed to be the right place, although she had a hard time telling each pile of rocks from another out here in this annoyingly dry desert.

"Show us your skills, great hunter." Her words were similar to praise but the delivery was flat and she seemed to be looking at her nails instead of Buffel. She wasn't sure how much talent to expect from a kid. Especially a lowblood. There were occasional standouts like Scorpa but she didn't get the same aura of ambition and drive radiating off of him like the other yellowblood.

"If you hurt yourself, I'll patch you up. So be brave." She wondered if he would be stupid enough to try and dig up the burrow or shove his hand in it. Or was he clever enough to find some other means of coaxing out the inhabitants of the dark tunnel? Her eyes glanced at him occasionally from trying to dig sand out from under her nails.

Hmm... Show 'em my skills, huh?

Buffel considered how he would show these two his skills in a way what were proper. They seemed to be a rough lot, but a contract was a contract. Best not to pitch a fit over some doctor nonsense.

”Alright, well I'll demonstrate the appropriate way to be wranglin' a spike-gnasher like these little ones in here. Coaxin' the varmints out ain't no hard sell.”

As he said this Buffel grabbed some feed from one of the pouches affixed to his belt and held it out to show them, before putting it back. He removed his sarape and tied the neck hole closed, then sprawled the remainder out as evenly as could be done. Opening the pouch again, Buffel placed a small mound of it on top of the cloth and lead a small trail to the burrow.

”Now usually you'll want a spotter 'r two fer the actual wranglin', but for the purposes of this here demonstration I'll be playin' a lone hand.”

After setting the feed in place, Buffel got low to the ground. He was completely in work most, and the girls were completely out of focus to him. As he kneeled prone, the sniffling of one of the little varmints could be heard. A snout peaked out from the burrow, probing cautiously. Soon a little one emerged. Buffel noted its frame and sized it up right quick as the runt of its litter. The little one followed the feed trail, gobbling away as lightning speed. As it made its way to the mound, Buffel gathered the corners of the sarape. The runt sat and began to eat, happy at its new treasure. Buffel slowly scooped the corners together and held the cloth close to his body as quickly as he could accomplish in a gentle fashion. Not looking at the gals, he continued his lecture at a whisper as he looked into the makeshift "runt sack".

”Now in a fix like this they'd normally use their spines to get out, so when they're good an' scooped you don't hold 'em out like they're gonna shred ya. Hold 'em close, nice an' firm. The warmth and the cloth should keep 'em cozy and complacent.”

The runt eyed up at him curiously for a moment, but seemed to consider him an idle threat at worst and continued its chowing presently.

”That's the long and short of it. Ya wanna try for the next one or would ya rather hold the runt while I get at 'em?”

"Impressive!" Scorpa clapped to encourage Buffel, playing the part of a client. She wanted to tease him or do something bad for some entertainment but also had to give him a little credit. He'd avoided their first trap with his little feed trick. While she was disappointed to not see him flustered and sweaty, she'd have to remember this later. It was an easier way to get the spikelizards to emerge so she could...

"Flydra will hold it." Letting the tealblood take the runt, Scorpa caught her eye and smiled to signal she had an idea. "Show me how you did the feed thing again." Scorpa asked without really asking and waited for Buffel to open the pouch. Then she took a step towards him and fell, knocking him down and the feed into a mess on the ground.

"Oh no! Now what'll we do?" Scorpa cried, feigning concern. This would be a good test to see how well he changed plans and if those other plans meant he was open to taking risks or not. At the very least, it would hopefully end up with an exciting or humorously bad development!

Buffel handed the runt over to Flydra gently. A gurgle was heard from within the blanket as it felt its own weight being shifted. At Scorpa’s request to be given the feed, he untethered it from his pant loop and loosed the opening of it.
”Here ya go you ca- NNNGGHH-!! SAKES ALIVE!”

The two yellowbloods toppled to the ground as Scorpa tripped into him. The feed scattered to the ground. At her cries of worry, the boy shook the confusion from his thinkpan and sprung into action. Getting up, he pulled Scorpa to her feet and began to kick dirt over the freshly fallen feed.

”Welp, they probably already got the nose fer the now, and if they’re anything like the other spikebeasts I’ve tussled with, this is gonna smart a bit.”

A dim thrashing and skittering could be heard from the mound. He ran up to Flydra, slowing as he neared to stay quiet. ”Apologies Miss, but I’ll be needin’ this back. Takin’ the runt too, he ain’t gonna like this but neither are we if we don’t cover that hole up directly!”
Snapping of jaws and hisses could be heard as the spike-gnashers fought over each other, desperate to climb out of the hole first. Their infightin’ would work just fine for the three trolls. Hefting the sarape over carefully, Buffel opened it up upside down into the hole. He felt the runt leap back in, and briefly claw through the cloth, scraping his hand. Unhooking his rope, he noosed it and placed it over the sarape. He poured what was left in the bag on top of his sarape. The rustling continued to grow louder until there was a sudden burst in the cloth. Holding the corners down on all fours, Buffel tightened the lasso, and the spikelizards all bundled together in the newly fashioned trap. Flipping it over, He hugged it tight as could be. The lounge of spikelizards kicked and hissed, and he felt their claws tear his shirt and face as they fussed. Slowly, the tight embrace caused them to soften, and he carefully placed the bag of gnashers down. Panting heavily, he smiled back at the duo.

”Yeah… so… -huff-...That’s uh...that’s basically how you would…-huff-...how you would catch ‘em… if that happened.”
