It had been by chance that Layne had even noticed her when he did, just a glance into the cafe window as he was heading for his car. Classes were over which meant the day was over or had been until blues landed on that familiar face. Still as sweet and innocent looking as the first time they'd gazed upon it.

Cassie.

It had been awhile now since they had been in contact, well at least face to face. Since he still kept her number Layne had from time to time texted. That was about it though as far as their current contact with one another. But they had a very rich history, one that kept the man lingering outside the cafe and awaiting the shift change.

Currently in his DCU baseball outfit Layne was leaning against the side of the building closes to the cafe's exit. Sneaking a smoke while debating on if leaving or waiting longer was worth it. In the end wanting to see the woman kept him firmly in place as he finished the smoke.

Even with the Spring semester having come to a close, it didn't mean her hours at one of the cafes on campus was down and out. Summer courses, sports schedules, full time administration workers, cleaning staff, support staff... the list went on in terms of the people she saw in and out of the building, milling around campus. For Cassie, it was a break away from powered life. A time to let her mind just... switch off. Chill, relax, go into autopilot.

Ok so not so much autopilot when some less than pleasant customers came around, but such was the life in customer service positions. It was the little things that made her shift better--happy and bubbly customers, easy orders, chitchat... And for the most part? She got those in general spades there on campus. The day was a slower one, sure, but nothing that ate at her nerves or had her in a huff when she finally said her farewells to her coworkers for the day.

The sun was still high enough in the sky for her to not be tempted to power up to get home, or feel the need to race back to her apartment for safety reasons. It was probably the main reason she had the time to look up at the baseball player as she stepped through the door, and had the presence of mind to actually have a moment of facial recognition. "Oh my g-.... Layne?"

It'd been... a while since she'd seen him face-to-face. Not terribly uncommon for her to get a text from him, or toss a text his way. Random conversations, random greetings--birthday, holidays. If there were things on the news in places she figured he still hung out, or seemed like were still his crowd, texts to make sure he was ok. Need an alibi? still was tossed around in half-humor, half-legit terms.

Her uniform was a DCU purple shirt with the cafe's logo across the left breast, black apron over black slacks and bright purple, comfy shoes. Matched his uniform as she stepped out of the way of the door for patrons going in and out, rounding in front of him with a wide grin across her face. One that tried to smother down into a serious expression as she huffed and eyed the cigarette. "Still doing that gross habit? Why can't you just switch to those e-cigs?" But the smile didn't want to stay pushed away by the stern look, and Cassie laughed, arms open as she stepped towards him for a hug. "I haven't seen you in forever, how've you been?"

It didn't take much longer thank god for the girl to emerge from the cafe into the evening. Layne was still smoking when she did though and knew instantly that he'd been scolded for it in some manner. Because that was just who she was, or who she had been when they were together. Grinning as Cassie's face twisted from happily surprised to mother hen he flicked the bud away towards the side of the building. Listening as she rambled on about e-cigs, "how'bout yew buy me one them an I will?" He purred sarcastically in that sweet southern roll she would remember before breaking into a laugh.

Cassie came in for the expected hug and Layne opened arms to receive it, softening and unable to help it. It felt good to be embracing the warm familiar body, even if she smelled like food. Heh, she at least smelt better than him considering the man was walking around smelling of smoke, sweat and cologne that just barely made it through practice. "Hey baybay, M'gud..gud..just been busy. Bout yew? When tha hell yew sneak in here on me?" He grinned only now letting go of the hug but hands lingering on the woman's hips. It wasn't that he was surprised she was at DCU more about the cafe job, since had he of known sooner it wouldn't have taken so long to meet up.

"Pft, like I'm spending my hard earned cash on your lazy a**," she jabbed, mocking in the roll of her eyes and huff of breath. It'd probably become a Christmas present, depending on if she missed his birthday or not--thank you contacts info in her phone for the answer either way. The Southern accent that swam through his words put her at ease, a familiar sound that helped to shove away the legitimate eye roll and huffing moments of the day.

They hadn't parted on bad terms. Giving him a hug now didn't pull on her heartstrings, or make her feel like she was stepping back into some bad habits or something. It was a familiar act, a greeting that made her grin. The brief press of warm bodies, the scent of someone familiar--even if she was never a fan of the smell of smoke, ew--kept her from thinking of her own current status of probably smelling like too much coffee and overdosed sweeteners. As she pulled back a bit, she didn't mind his hands lingering at her hips, letting her own mimic his movements.

A cheeky grin lit her features as she tossed her head, trying to get some wisps of multi-colored-dyed hair out of her face after they slipped from her haphazard bun. "Um... been at the school like... almost two years now I think? Job a little less than that, but yeah." She winced a bit, grimace turning into a sheepish, apologetic smile. "Thought I told you, but might have slipped my mind. I wasn't sure if you were still going here or if you'd graduated, or transferred, or whatever." Excuses, excuses. She wasn't sure what kept her from reaching out to Layne, but... well. Whatever. He was there, she was there. Done.

"'Sides that? Pretty good, mostly busy. Classes, work..." Senshi stuff.... city going to hell with monsters popping up everywhere.... She ignored all that for now though. The less she had to dwell on the negative, the better. Instead, she gave his uniform a small tug, brows lifting and grin on her face. "So you're on the baseball team? You'll have to let me know next time you guys are playing so I can come see!" Cassie wasn't a big sports fan, never had been, but seeing a game in person especially when you knew someone involved with a team... well, that sort of changed the story, now didn't it? "Are you heading to practice now or..?"
