Baelian Islands

These Islands sit off the western coast of mainland Istrea, far from the other nations. It is an island nation of it's own, not owned by the others. It's only ties to the others is with Erowyth, Land of Rogues. Many who reside here have for generations and few seldom leave their island sanctuary. Not much is known about this nation because they are so secluded from the remainder of Istrea. They do not have many imports nor exports as they are self-sufficient. The volcanic soil of their nation, like that of Noeven, means they have lush and fertile soil perfect for agriculture.

Their clothing and architecture of their cities is similar to that of the many island nations of the Bahamas (Jamaica, Cuba) and the many island nations of Polynesia (New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, Samoa). It is no surprise that their clothing resembles this fact. Vibrant colors are a common occurance here. They are also lead by a tribal leader who is known as Keneil Sanaa.

The capital "kingdom" of this nation, and its largest city, is Rhoessa. There are no formal cities, merely towns that resemble tribes or older Bahama architecture such as their huts. The islands consist of many huts that are often built over the water; these are fishing communities that provide the main food in the Baelian diet. Rhoessa is located on the largest of the three islands. These islands, from biggest to smallest, are: Kahurangi, Huhana, and Ngaire.

Rhoessa

It is within the city of Rhoessa that you will find the beautiful and elaborate hand-crafted buildings of the Baelian people. Here, merfolk and other races co-exist in harmony under the sun and amongst the crashing waves. Rhoessa is the largest community on the three islands and is home to a majority of the citizens of the Baelian Islands. It is a peaceful nation that stays out of the wars of the rest of Istrea. Many of the tribesmen are warriors through and through and it is a nation that has it's own culture. If one wishes to be part of it, they conform to what has been for centuries; unlike Erowyth.

Baelian Religion

The religion of the Baelian Islands is one that is not well-known across Istrea since this nations keeps to itself most of the time. Their belief follows that of four gods, two male and two female, one which falls under each different season. Akiliano is the oldest of the four and is the God of the Summer, fire, volcanoes, and so on. Etera is his wife and is the Goddess of Spring, flowers, nature, and the ocean breeze. Aoloa is Akiliano's younger twin brother and is the God of Winter, water, tsunamis, and storms. Haulani is the youngest of the gods and the sister of Etera, being the Goddess of Autumn, the earth, sand, all creatures, and earthquakes.

This religion has beliefs of life after death, being one with the land, and communication with the deceased long after they have passed. In their culture, there are hundreds of Gods each for a different thing. There are gods of trees, rivers, oceans, mountains, clouds, storms, fish, fire, and so on. Their religion is sacred and it is forbidden for others to speak it or to speak it on foreign soil; punishment for such an act is death. In terms of what foods they can and cannot eat, they eat anything they can find. More often they eat animals in abundance to not tarnish their numbers, thus they mostly eat fish year round rather than other meats. Only during special festivals and occasions do they eat other animals such as wild deer and pigs that roam the islands. If one catches an animal, they are expected to make use of all of it. As such, much of the jewellery of the Baelian Islands is made of bone and even fish scales.
