Temperance was browsing craigslist boredly. She'd been poking at the internet idly all day, but it seemed like one of those days where nothing was actually interesting. She should be studying or napping or - she looked at her bed. Maybe not napping. Nevertheless, here she was clicking on various ads and reading them. Who knew so many people in Ashdown experienced missed connections? That seemed utterly silly to Temperance. A person didn't connect to another with one glance. Hell, a person didn't connect to another more than superficially like, ever. She clicked to another part of the website and her eyes narrowed. This... offer of services... it... Temperance clicked 'reply'. Hetzerei To: qqjp4-5092864702@sale.craigslist.org From: heartswords@gmail.com Hi, Was just curious if you've been stitching up any humans lately? Heard a rumor. If not, know any other taxidermists in Ashdown? Thnx.

To whom it may concern:
Human skin is three times the thickness of, for example, canine skin and similarly exhibits much more elasticity. This elasticity finds no ability to ‚retract‘ shall we say, in death, and is therefore not often a subject used by most taxidermists. This does not touch on the convoluted legalities behind taxidermy of a human subject. I suggest you look into the sources of your rumors and qualify their truthfulness for yourself before inquiring about taxidermy of human corpses by my hand.
For your other question, I know of one other taxidermist in Ashdown. He offers a tanning service which I do not, but he limits his business to large game and waterfowl where I present the gambit of large game, small game, fish, and other venues (rogue and anthropomorphic taxidermies included). He does not offer lapidary or scrimshaw either.
Good day to you.

Hetzerei To: zaehne.und.gebeine@gmail.com From: heartswords@gmail.com Hi, Fascinating, I'm sure. Was talking about live humans. Out of curiosity, did you happen to attend that job fair at Blackfriar's a bit ago? I might have seen you there! Cheers, T. C.

I did attend the job fair. You must be referring to the incidents when you asked about stitching up humans.
I stitched up one man who would have bled out before infection could become an in issue. He made it to the hospital. He hasn't shown up in any commissions that I know of.
Do you have any information on the animal there?

Hetzerei To: zaehne.und.gebeine@gmail.com From: heartswords@gmail.com Oh my god. You were the idiot. Oh my god I thought so. Never ever do that again. Do you realize how many nurses were even there??? And no, no info. The police said it was a drug-fueled man, but I'm not entirely convinced. T. C.

Maybe those nurses should've stepped in when the man was bleeding to death. When I was there, I saw just about every occupation but nurses. A writer and a detective helped with taking care of him. Perhaps they were all indisposed with other injuries? Should I have stood idly by and let him bleed to death until the next nurse was available? That's how this goes in emergency rooms around America, yes?
It's unfortunate that you know little more about the incident. What I heard of it encompasses the supernatural. Would that, therefore, render it unreliable? Impossible?

Hetzerei To: zaehne.und.gebeine@gmail.com From: heartswords@gmail.com There were several nursing booths set up - it was a job fair, after all. I certainly saw several. Wounds that bleed enough should have pressure applied until handed off to a medical professional. An improperly stitched wound ups the chance of infection and, subsequently, death, exponentially. And, depending on wound type, if not packed, blood can pool within the wound, causing pressure that can even burst stitches. Anyway.... supernatural? What did you hear? Some of those wounds I didn't think looked like the work of human hands, even if drug-fueled. T. C.

Point taken.
I can't be certain of what I heard; it sounds too preposterous for a skeptic to believe. I personally did not see much of the one that did the damage, as he skirted by me much too quickly.
I heard some mention of 'were', which leads me to think of werewolves. Others were discussing it by me. Given that some of the wounds looked animalistic, they might have been referencing it. I wasn't around for the rest of the conversation so they might have been discussing 'where' they might escape from, but I doubt this highly. 'Were' sounded like a noun. I wonder what the doctors thought of those wounds?

Hetzerei To: zaehne.und.gebeine@gmail.com From: heartswords@gmail.com Werewolves aren't supposed to be real. Though I guess anything is possible in this weird town. The doctors, the emts that took away the wounded and dead... seems like they were given the same story of drug-fueled assailant. And they either believed it, or were told to believe it. I don't believe it, not really, but when it's one person against everyone else, you don't really get to ask questions. Do you ever dream of weird places? Or rather, a weird place. T. C. She frowned and took a gulp of her coffee as she hovered over the send button. Ah, what the hell, Temperance thought. Let him think she was crazy; it wouldn't be the first person. And he was a s**t head anyway - endangering lives and all that. Though, she thought, he kind of reminded her of one of her brothers, in a weird way. They didn't seem to be anything alike, and she couldn't really make the measure of a person via email. Not that she was planning on dropping by, ever.

I've never found reason to put faith in such stories myself; as a taxidermist, it is easy enough for me to cobble together entire new species of fantastical animals without great trouble. It's easy enough to make evidence for supernatural happenstance, or blow it out of proportion. I am inclined to believe it isn't the case here in Ashdown.
The doctors can believe the safe story about Blackfriars. I doubt there would be much positive result in exposing any fantastical happenings that came from it. Mass panic and the lot has to be considered. It is something I want to investigate myself. But, with the scene of the crime now cordoned off for investigation purposes, that becomes terribly difficult.
To your other question, I answer that your question of dreams is of direct relation to my doubt in the Blackfriars story. I've dreamt of strange places. I've dreamt of my own name across a dozen tombstones, but it wasn't a dream at all.
A park ranger escorted me out of there, actually. He told me about it somewhat. It's peculiar, and not altogether friendly.

I can say with certainty that it isn't. I've been in this line of work for years and never once suffered dreams of graveyards. They've been a non-entity to this point in my life.
The name of the ranger is Finn Derouen.

Alois signed off afterward, feeling both glad the exchange concluded yet uncertain of the subject matter. He wondered, briefly, if speaking of Other Ashdown and the dreams it yielded was a taboo subject. It couldn't have been - there were no laws over it and he hadn't yet suffered repercussions for sharing information - but he felt he somehow cheapened the experience by letting another in on the bizarre events surrounding the other place. Maybe it meant nothing at all.
But, he assured himself, the rest of his day was bound to feel just as bizarre.
