It hadn't been long since she'd moved here and already Nazriya could tell that a little exploring would be good for her runs; jogging downtown and looking at architecture was great, but dodging pedestrians and the occasional cyclist who'd had the fantastic idea to drive on the sidewalk got really old, really fast.

Maybe it was just because she was used to jogging in a much, much smaller town that it all seemed rather overwhelming. Maybe, in time, she would get used to running downtown.

Well, today wasn't going to be that day, come hell or high water. Today she was actually going to find somewhere prettywithout the risk of colliding with other person present.

At least that was the idea that had led her to jogging on this beaten trail winding away from a larger road. The area was unknown to her, but it was wooded and tranquil and best of all, practically deserted.

“Wooooo,“ Schatzie declared to the surrounding wildlife. He looked about himself, snuffed at the ground, and padded around in a circle while anxiously awaiting the return of his owner. And yet, ever more, the woods stared back at him in their eternal invitation, daring him to scour their vastness for signs of Alois. The dog had not yet given in toward such desires, but he drew terribly close with the passing minutes. Schatzie’s order’s to stay only held him for so long, and even now with the overhead sun beating down on his black and gold coat, the dog was tempted to forsake such orders entirely.

Footfalls sounded in the distance, and the dog’s keen hearing pricked his ears in under a second. He looked toward the origin of the sound, muscles rigid with alertness, protection flashing through his mind, but soon emerged a stranger whom he never met previously. His tail raised, and his stance slackened in decided interest in this newcomer. She was something to do, someone to meet while passing time for his owner.

„Woowoowoooo,“ he spoke to her in typical German Shepherd fashion. He paced back and forth to ease some of his restlessness. His tail wagged lazily, almost listlessly in the noonday sun while he panted in decided contentment.

A new person would most definitely tide him over until his owner’s reappearance.

Naz had been lost in her own world, absentmindedly following the trail and focusing on her breathing when the sudden noise of a dog barking made her rhythm and step falter, forcing her to slow to a stop close to said dog. She took a moment to lean forward and put her hands on her thighs as she panted for breath, eyeing the dog as she did. He didn't seem to be particularly threatening - he'd woofed, but that was just an alert, right? German shepherds were guard dogs, after all.

And he seemed happy enough to see her, body language open and relaxed from what she could tell.

Finally catching her breath, she sinuously righted herself as the affectionate smile she usually reserved for cute animals grew upon her face.

"Hey buddy!" Slowly she held out a relaxed hand towards the creature, palm facing upwards as she inched closer. "What are you doing out here, all by yourself?"

Close enough to touch the dog, she held her hand still so he might sniff her if he wanted to. "Where's your owner, puppy - don't you have one?" Her voice was soft and crooning, low and slow as she evaluated the dog; the fur was nice and well-kept, he seemed healthy and in good shape and there was no reason that she could see to assume that this dog was homeless.

So why was he all alone out here?

Schatzie showed a lot of practice with humans - he sniffed her hand as it was offered, and retained his relaxed and open posture with her. The tongue came out soon afterward, flopping rhythmically with every panted breath, and he took a seat before her. Somewhere within his considerable scruff hung a collar, braided leather, with a single unadorned tag offering his name - ‚Schatzie‘. On the underside read a phone number, with the name ‚Scholz‘ engraved above it. Otherwise, Schatzie bore no information about him concerning the whereabouts of his owner.

Greetings aside, Schatzie offered a grunt as he twisted around. A quick glance was spared to her - Doggish for follow me - and he soon resumed a fair trot back toward the thick of the woods. Underbrush cracked and rustled beneath large paws while he traversed the uneven paths. He ducked the low-reaching brambles and paused occasionally to ensure that his latest recruit was still following. If she fell too far behind, he would backtrack to her until she looked ready to follow once more. If nothing else, he was a patient dog.

But he did not have long to wait - soon another figure emerged from deeper in the woods, covered in black and thoroughly waterlogged on a clear day. He ran black painted nails through equally black hair, removing their plastered wefts from his face. His countenance lay somewhere between exasperated and disappointed until he sighted the dog. „Schatzie,“ he started, and the dog’s body language perked accordingly, „where do you get off recruiting other people to follow you?“ He did not speak condescendingly to his dog, and the reception of ample face scritches softened the words.

„He suckered you in, didn’t he? He likes to do that when I tell him to stay.“ Green eyes focused on the stranger in Schatzie’s tow, and they lacked the warmth the dog projected.

Once the dog was done sniffing her hand, Naz gave it a few scratches under the chin. She wasn't as well-versed with dogs as she were cats, but she'd read somewhere that some dogs found being patted on the head by strangers threatening and she was having none of that. For one thing she wasn't into making animals uncomfortable and for another, there'd be no-one to hear her scream out here if the large dog decided to maul her. Not that she was devoting too much mental energy to that thought, it was just, y'know, there.

A few languid scritches later, she felt something around the dog's neck - of course, a collar! Gently pulling some of the plentiful fur aside, she took a look at the tag. "Schatzie," she mused out loud; a german shepherd named in german, who'd have thunk. There was another name, Scholz, and a phone number - Nazriya was getting out her phone to call it when the dog twisted away from her with a grunt. "Hey!"

Schatzie gave her a look and then started moving deeper into the woods. Grumbling and a bit worried, she stashed her phone away and made to follow; the poor dear shouldn't be out here alone.

Unless of course this was a Lassie situation and she was being led to an injured owner or something. Because it quickly occurred to her that she was, in fact, being led.

Well, she was too curious not to follow. They didn't go too far before someone else appeared though, emerging from the woods, clad in black and... completely drenched? Baffled, she watched him interact with his dog before he turned his attention to her.

"So he did. You must be Scholz," her voice was neutral, but her head was cocked slightly to the side and her arms were crossed under her chest. What kind of owner left his dog alone in the woods?

“I am.“ Alois rubbed his hands against his clothes instinctively, but they only found more water. Displeased, he settled for shirking his soaked jacket. The shirt underneath didn’t fare much better. „In case you didn’t find out, this is Schatzie.“

The dog looked to her thoughtfully, tail wagging at a slow pace. Having found his owner, he paced to Alois’ side.

„If you’ll excuse us.“

"Hold up," she held out a hand, mouth set in a firm line. "You can't just leave your dog out here all alone while you go-" she gave him a glance up and down before settling on a quizzical- "swimming with all your clothes on? What the ******** man. That's really irresponsible."

And by that she meant both leaving poor Schatzie here alone and swimming with his regular clothes on because honestly, that s**t was liable to get him drowned if he wasn't exceedingly careful. And then where would the dog be? Stuck all alone in the woods with no-one to get him, that's ******** where.

Alois leveled a scathing and exasperated stare at her. „Or, it wasn’t a choice zat I went swimming. Maybe it’s better to let go of ze leash so ze dog doesn’t go sliding wis’ you into ze water, eh? Or is it less irresponsible to drown your dog?“ This b***h can’t be serious. Who even cares enough to admonish strangers on how they treat their animals?

Alois gathered Schatzie’s fallen leash into his hands and wrapped the thick knot of leather around bony knuckles. Schatzie moved to stand between the pair, not yet agitated, but recognizably alert. Alois patted his dog in an absent gesture. „But next time ze ground decides to open up and swallow me, I’ll be sure to take my dog wis’. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind paddling around and stinking to high heavens afterward.“
