Preacher rapped her knuckles on Jeremiah's door frame. For once, the door wasn't really closed (almost nearly half-open counted as open, right?),so she thought it was maybe a good time to bother him. Or maybe it wasn't - but the bothering would happen at some point. Preacher couldn't think of a better man to pump for information, even if she was sure he'd be reticent. Plus, choosing Mercer meant she'd think things through carefully before speaking, mostly.

"Hey, boss, you have time for me to ask you a weird question?" She leaned against the door frame, idly pushing open the door with one foot, trying to make it look casual. Preacher wondered how worth it ti would be to try and pepper her questions with 'nyas'.

A half-opened door meant that Jeremiah was receptive to anyone coming into his office. With things having been busy, with what had happened, he was - more often than not - buried under some level of paperwork and work in general.

He was lifting up a tea cup, taking a drink as he heard the rap on the door and looked up. It was Preacher and his expression immediately soften a little bit, just around the edges. The question however ...

"Of course. Come in, have a seat, close the door behind you?" The blinds were still open on the windowed glass but at least it would be a private conversation.

Mercer was honestly pretty chill as far as bosses went. Preacher had held down a scant couple of jobs during high school and, well, she didn't want to punch Mercer in the face. That was a plus. And he baked. She was very invested in staying on his good side. She mumbled out a thanks and quietly closed his door before sitting down. There was never was anything ladylike in the way she sat - it was good she always wore pants or leggings.

"You used to weird questions? Wait," She held up her hand. "I bet I already know the answer to that and it's yes." Preacher chuckled, fidgeting a bit with the hem of her shirt. To dive in or not to dive in? ....To dive in.

"So what all happened at Blackfriar's?"

It also likely helped that there was a particularly comfy couch in his office for any times that he had to pull an all-nighter (and a pillow and blanket stuffed away behind it). Preacher had a good head on her shoulders and Jeremiah could respect that.

Everything he had heard about her since she had started working was good. It had been he had followed his gut on pushing for her to have a chance working for the department. She meshed well with the environment and the people that worked here.

"Depends on the type of weird questions," he responded immediately, "but the answer is yes no matter what. There's at least one conspiracy theorist in town and a reporter who ... ah." Jeremiah paused. "just look into Keep Ashdown Spoopy. It's a website run by one of the local business owners."

At the mention of Blackfriar's his expression went unreadable for a moment, far beyond the usual neutral. "You stayed downstairs the entire time, didn't you?" A breath. "I was glad to find out you weren't injured."

"Spoopy?" She snorted at the word choice. After a moment, though, Preacher pulled a pen out of her hair and jotted down Keep Ashdown Spoopy. She wasn't ever gonna remember that unless she wrote it down (even then, her memory was flighty at best), but hey anything to look into was better than nothing.

She glanced up in time to see his expression shutter, though she had no idea what it meant. Her eyebrows rose for a moment before she reponded. "Yeah - wasn't gonna be of much use anywhere I went." Preacher shrugged. It was true; she was useless unless there was a fight to be had and even then, her size and lack of formal training meant she had to rely heavily on surprise.

"Went down to the basement. You know, to look for a way out. Found one, too - but that's not here nah there. Saw some odd things, though. Was wondering if there was weird s**t upstairs, too."

"It's run by the kid," still calling a Cid a kid even though he was in his thirties now, "who owns the comic book shop in town. The 4th wall. He pokes his nose into anything and everything that might be the least bit supernatural. Though he has been having since I nearly arrested him for getting a little too bold when the teens originally went missing." The original three, the same set Jeremiah himself was assumed to have been part of until he had shown back up.

An eyebrow was raised at Preacher appraising herself as useless but he let it slide for now. "You are aware of the official statement, Preacher." His tone wasn't unfriendly either, more carefully worded because of where they were. "There was plenty going on upstairs, far more than what happened downstairs in the concourse. We were making sure none of the attackers made it down to you and securing more survivors."

She grinned at Mercer, unshamedly. "If I was looking for official, I'd read the papers." And she had. Preacher was quite aware of the statement they had been put out concerning Blackfriars and how it did not cover anything. Well, it covered a bit - enough for some people, maybe.

"I don't recall the statement covering the nature of the attackers upstairs, nor their eventual fate." She studied her nails closely. Short, chewed on, boring but she was using them to focus on her own words. It hadn't really been publicized who the attackers were or their fates. "It certainly didn't cover anything like the cat-boy I met downstairs." Preacher flicked her eyes up to Mercer, trying to gauge his reaction.

An eyebrow raised at the mention of a catboy. Another moonwalker? Like Eve and Lucas and the others?

"The attackers, aside from the one that was killed in self-defense, all managed to get out of the library and past the quarantine." Blue-green eyes watched her. "... but at this point you're aware that they weren't quite fully human anymore, if you met a catboy."

Did he just say that? What was his life coming to? Oh wait. Right, no room to talk mister glow in the dark cat eyes.

She paused for a long moment. "I see." Preacher's fingers tapped the page of her notebook rhythmically. "So, do we assume animalistic people to be hostile or aggressive on site or...?" She bet pulling a cat's tail would hurt.

"Absolutely not," he replied immediately, "as you met one that was not aggressive, did you not?" Jeremiah's fingers tapped against his desk, fingers smoothing across the fingerprint scorch marks that were visible for a little while.

He had cleared through most of the paperwork and would need to cover it up again later.

"Something occurred that put them into that state."

"He was not," she replied. "You've met some non-aggressive, then?" It seemed as though the majority had been aggressive at Blackfriar. Seemed - because he'd said the attackers were such and because, well, she hadn't seen anyone else wandering around with animal bits poking out. If aggressive wasn't a default for these...these beasties, then...

"Was it, uh, moon related?"

"Yes," he replied, and then raked a hand through his hair. "I'm due for a break, Preacher, would you mind walking with me?"

Which was really code for I would prefer to have these kind of discussions outside the building.

Yes, but to which? she wondered as he proposed a walk. "Legs were made for walkin', anyway." And Preacher stood, prepared to follow him wherever.

She wondered if his office was bugged.

It was not bugged but that did not mean people could not overhear things and he was not of the mind that he wanted people to hear some of this. Jeremiah gave Preacher a slight twitch of lips, amused once more, before he was heading out.

There was no talking until they were out on the streets. City Hall was just right there and, just a little further down the block, a cart that sold drinks and other things. That was the direction he was heading.

"There were non-aggressive," he finally said, hands slipping into the pockets of his jacket. The detective lieutenant was always dressed for colder weather despite it was warming up. "As for it being moon related? It was but not at the same time."

"So not, like, werecats n' junk." She hmmed thoughtfully. "Why don't we see a buncha people running 'round with tails and cat paws and whatnot all the time, then?" Her short legs had to work to keep up with Mercer, even at his steady pace. Being tiny was hard.

As they walked, she too shoved her hands into her pockets, subconsciously mimicking the detective.
