She was nothing short of ecstatic.

It was summer, which not only meant it was the end of a very successful first year in college , but also meant it was sailing time. Ever since meeting Michael and going out on that short trip with him, she'd been throwing herself into learning everything she could about sailing. She texted him frequently with questions and thoughts, showed off the knots she tied to him like a kid proudly showing off their macaroni art, did her research on google, watching videos on YouTube, and also took to surfing through stores in the city that focused on marine equipment.

Today was an unbearable excitement though. It'd be the first time she'd be out on the boat for practically the entire day. Lunch packed long.

Olga was at the wheel of Michael's boat, clad in her sun hat, short wet suit, and long sleeve shirt over the top of it, grinning widely. "...Does there happen to be anywhere to sail to around here---within a day, I mean." She laughed a bit. "Any bits of land or anything?" She asked, just curious.

Part of Michael wondered if he should be nervous about being out on the open water with someone he barely knew, but Olga had been putting in a lot of work to prepare herself for the trip. She followed his instructions and, as before, seemed genuinely interested in learning which was always a good thing.

Michael lounged on the deck against the railing wearing swim trunks and a grey tank top and sunglasses, although he looked up when Olga asked about any bits of land.

"Depends. We're on the Bay right now, so we can either sail over to Northampton, or up toward Maryland. We could head down towards Virginia Beach. Probably don't want to go farther south than that, though. North Carolina has a lot of shallow areas that come and go with the tide in the Outer Banks," he explained, trying to think of somewhere they could head.

"I'd probably say up toward Maryland. There's a stretch of islands close to the border."

The young woman nodded her head as she listened, letting out a thoughtful hum. The cry of some seagulls nearby drew her attention, and she glanced up to see them soaring along, following next to one of the sails. "Sounds good to me!" She replied. "I don't have any preference---I'm just excited we're out and about! It's like---my first legit trip out on a real boat!" That first little excursion had been a test run, in her opinion.

"It's pretty..." She trailed off for a moment. "Liberating! This---" She adjusted the wheel a bit. "That you can just do where you want---there's not a wall of people around---have you ever thought about sailing across the world? I was reading about boats and teams that do that! It just seems really amazing!"

Michael watched Olga in mild amusement as she voiced her excitement, her enthusiasm for learning how to sail and actually doing it very clear on her face. It was a good thing, in his opinion, otherwise… what’s the point?

“Keep an eye on the compass on the dashboard. We’ll want to head north. There aren’t any sandbars or things to worry about for a while, but if you see a buoy then let me know,” he requested, just in case they got off course, but for now he let her take control.

“I think about it all the time,” he admitted, looking up at the sails against the blue of the sky. “Just leave and travel around the world and never come back.” He drew in a breath and let it out. “But that’s a little difficult in the middle of a war. But yeah… it’s very… liberating. Like flying, almost.”

"Ah, right!" Out of reflex of being told, she looked at the compass, and then made the slight adjustment to make sure the ship was heading in the right direction. She nodded her head in reply as well, and then tilted it in Michael's direction to indicate she was listening to him. Olga let out a bit of a soft laugh. "Never come back, huh?" She echoed, trailing off.

Her brows knitted in thought.

"...I don't think I ever put too much thought into that, actually...post-college. In light of---now." Her lips twisted a bit, and she brushed off the subject for now, because she still had three years before she seriously had to confront it. "Surely it...it can't hold that much power though, yeah? I mean---if you want to go on a trip, and you haven't for a while---then it's okay...right?" She sounded unsure though, even as she asked.
