It was dark that night. And hot. The new moon made it difficult to see when out of the welcoming glow of the streetlamps. The stars were rarely seen within the city, so they were of no help either. But the moon and stars were not needed when tracking down the aura of a senshi that seemed to power up not too far away.

Jet, knowing that drunks from the local bars often stumbled into the area for fun, had been watching from the building above a once empty lot that had been converted into an urban playground. It was much rougher than the brightly colored plastics and shiny metal of suburban playgrounds, and had been made with discarded items and scrap metal to create a small escape for the children, and adults, who lived in the city.

The placement of trees around the area between buildings obstructed his view from immediately seeing who could have been lurking below. If only he could have been paying closer attention, he might have been able to discover the identity of that senshi. Since that was not the case, the next best option was to deal with them.

By now, he was sure the senshi had felt his aura too, and promptly stepped off the edge of the building. The rush of adrenaline from falling was enough to get his heart racing, and halfway down he teleported from midair to close to where he felt the aura. Knives were drawn from subspace and he slashed viciously through the air as he reappeared, although it seemed as though he was just short of making physical contact with the senshi.

If there was one thing that Remus was cursing about being a senshi it was the fact that, even in the hot weather, he was forced into a fuku that had long-sleeves and a capelet. It did not help that no matter what he did to the damn thing, it still remained as pristine as ever every time he powered up, which meant that by the time his patrols rolled around, he was usually relatively uncomfortable.

But he had decided to power up anyway, because it was habit by now to sneak out at night and roam the city. Remus, true to his word, was trying to be a little more cautious about things, especially considering what had happened with that Harmotome chick; but he could not help the small thrill of exhilaration that stemmed every time he became Remus.

As Remus, he had a whole new life and a whole new world opened up to him.

He could feel the power signature of someone close by - Chaos, no doubt, judging by the twisted darkness of the feel of it. Remus had been attempting to lose him for the last little while, though his attempts had been in vain, because just as he slipped past an alleyway, there was a flash of silver and a blue.

"s**t - "

Remus backtracked hastily, the knives coming within an inch of his chest. He skidded on the pavement and straightened again, eyebrows raised.

"What, no names exchanged before we try and kill each other?" he asked airily, eyeing the young man before him. "Sorry, I usually like to know who I'm going head to head with."

Damn, Jet thought when he missed the senshi by inches, and watched as the other guy leapt out of his reach and just a little ways away. He glowered and readjusted his grip on his knives, holding them up to prepare for his next attempt.

“It won’t matter when you’re dead,” he shared, the knives glimmering in the streetlight, but other than that it was almost impossible to see. He could barely even make out what the senshi was wearing, although he made a mental note of what he could observe.

“Brave of you to not run away when you’re clearly outmatched!” Jet growled, lunging forward once more with another vicious swipe. He had no intention of giving out his name. He would simply kill this senshi, take their starseed, and then be on his way. His intention was to just drain the energy of people who obviously had nothing better to do but get wasted at bars, but this would do nicely just the same.

“But if you tell me yours, I’ll be sure to let the police know where to find your body.” He lunged once more, relentless from the beginning. He was a Captain, and this senshi would be an easy kill.

Remus wondered just how young the Negaverse was recruiting these days. He swore this guy did not sound that much older than he was - though it was hard to tell with the light barely giving him enough to make out the details of his face.

"I'd rather not die today, thanks," said Remus, and he leapt back, but this time was not quick enough. One of the knives sliced at his arm, and he hissed in pain, feeling the sting of the blade through his shirt and across his skin. The other one missed, Remus twisting out of the way with barely enough time to do even that.

"I'll give you the same name I gave that other lieutenant," he said, kicking out in an attempt at catching the Captain by the ******** class="quote">

Jet was angry that he didn’t manage to off the senshi right away. He knew they were often fast on their feet, and in the darkness it would be more difficult to land hits, but he had the advantage of strength in this situation.

“Very mature,” he spat, pleased that he heard at least one hiss of pain, which meant that he must have done some damage. “If you’d rather not die, there’s always the option of joining,” he offered in a brief moment of mercy. Getting a senshi starseed was one thing, but converting them to their side was another.

Already tired of the other being able to dodge him so easily, he teleported once more, this time directly behind him. Without a moment’s hesitation, he struck out again, aiming for what he knew must be the senshi’s back as he breathed heavily. Attacking for speed meant that he was going to end up using a lot of his energy rather quickly. He knew he wouldn’t be able to teleport much more after this, but if he could take the senshi down with just a couple extra hits and used energy, it would be worth it.

His arm, which had flared with pain for a moment, seemed to dull a little now, the pain subsiding into a low throb. Remus wished there was a little more light; casting his magic now, without being able to see, wasn't that great of an option, even with the dim street lamp nearby. Everything else was shadowed in darkness, black shapes that shifted and moved.

"Hell, no, I ain't joining your side even if you had all the money in the world," said Remus, skittering to the side - but one second the guy was in front of him, and the next he'd disappeared and pain shot through Remus like a wildfire, up and down his back.

"s**t - "

Remus pivoted sharply, throwing out his leg and hoping to the high heavens that it connected with some part of the Captain. The pain in his arm was rising again, from a dull ache to something more stinging, throbbing more and more with each second.

"You little ******** - "

The sound of fabric and flesh ripping had Jet grinning wildly, his eyes flashing with victory. It shouldn’t be much longer now. The faster this was over, he kept telling himself, the better.

Of course, he hadn’t expected the senshi to have enough fight in him to attack him in return, and Jet swore when he felt a heel of a boot make contact with his shin.

He was not built for fighting, and easily crumpled from the pain to his leg. “<********>,” he hissed, temporarily dropping the knives so he could crouch down to inspect his leg in the darkness. He already knew he would have a horrible bruise in the morning, but at least he managed to draw blood from the senshi.

“You’re dead,” he spat, picking up his knives once more, and practically throwing himself at the senshi. At his point, he didn’t even care about the starseed, as long as he could plunge a knife through his chest.

His back had settled into a dull ache, and something was wrong. Something was not quite right with his injuries, going from bad, to not bad, to even worse, as though his body wasn't handling things correctly. His arm was throbbing, his heartbeat in his ears.

But his foot had connected, and Remus let out a hiss of satisfaction when he saw the shadowed figure drop. It did not last very long, however, because the next second had the captain snatching up his blades and lunging towards Remus with a snarl.

"What did I tell you about dying," Remus growled, and one of the blades sliced a line through his shirt, a line of red appearing against the white. He grabbed for the captain's arms, trying to push them away before they could do anymore damage, but his back was beginning to hurt now too.

"The ******** did you do to me you little s**t - " he gasped out, aiming a knee to the other's stomach.

Jet grinned wickedly as he felt his knife make contact again, although it was still not enough to bring down the Senshi. It was only a matter of time before he succumbed to his injuries, whether he bleed out too much or falter from exhaustion. Either was fine with the Captain, and he made to try and aim for the senshi's neck.

Of course the Senshi seemed determined to fight back and grabbed for his arms. His grip was stronger than Jet was expecting and struggled to free himself, his knives being shaken from his grasp.

The knee to the stomach was also unexpected, if only because Jet thought the senshi had been wounded to the point where his strength would be waning, but it looked like he had more fight left.

Jet felt the wind knocked from his lungs and he crumpled to the ground, gasping and coughing as he tried to get the air back into his lungs.

"Give it up," he growled once he had enough air to speak. "You'll die whether you like it or not," Jet spat scrambling to try and get away. He could teleport again, but that would be almost all his energy.

He could feel himself beginning to slow, the pain starting to numb all of his other senses. Remus's limbs felt sluggish as he shifted position again; his attempt at kneeing the other in the stomach having succeeded, he had to get away before those knives caught him once more.

"I'm not gonna die," he managed to get out, but his back was throbbing, and just how deep had that knife managed to cut? It felt terrible to move, Remus pressing a hand to the cut to his chest, feeling a sticky wet heat against his fingers that made breathing painful. He swung his other hand, trying to hit him once ******** off," said Remus, through gritted teeth, but he was taking a step back, moving away, trying to figure out what the hell he was going to do now. "Go...to hell."

It took a little while for Jet to catch his breath, but once he did, he moved to slowly pick up the knives he’d dropped. The senshi was slowing. He was wearing out and would soon be unable to fight back. It was just a waiting game now.

Jet took a step forward, following after the shuffled steps of the injured senshi, his eyes narrowed, hands gripped tightly around the hilts of his knives. Lucky for him, he seemed to be backing the senshi up into an alley that dead ended. Soon there would be nowhere left for him to run, nowhere for him to hide in the darkness. Jet wondered how long it would take for someone to find the body.

“You’re not looking too good,” he grinned, his voice soft, his eyes wild. It would be the first senshi whose starseed he was actually able to take. It would definitely be a prize for him. “You could just sit down and rest for a bit, I promise I won’t do anything.”

He would wait. The senshi just needed to bleed out a little more, and then he would kill him.

His breath was coming out in shorter, more ragged rasps now. Remus's feet felt heavy as he took another step back, and then another, and he felt like running would do no good, especially considering how trapped he was. The alleyway was behind him, the darkness looming up, and he could hardly see where else there was to go.

s**t. s**t. s**t.

The Captain's voice wavered towards him, eerie and soft in the shadows. Remus could see him moving, shifting through the black and gray towards him, and his foot hit something. Staggering, he fell back with a clatter, hands scraping the grimy pavement, pain ricocheting up his back.

"No," he mumbled, and there were spots dancing in his line of vision now, not helping with the lack of light. He tried to scramble back, but everything was feeling terribly uneven around him. A hand rose, palm out in front of him, as though this would somehow prevent the inevitable.

"Don't - don't - "

Pathetic.

These senshi didn’t know what they were dealing with. The strength of the Negaverse would overpower them all. Soon they would be wiped out, like they should have been years ago.

“Shh, just a little longer,” Jet promised, crouching down several feet away from the senshi to watch and wait. There was blood on the ground from his wounds, and he could tell that the senshi’s strength was fading fast.

A heat grew in his pocket, the communicator he’d received seeming to vibrate with energy. Almost lazily, he reached in and pulled it out, knowing he could just respond to whoever it was later, almost as if it were just another text coming in. He would have this senshi’s starseed soon enough.

But Jet’s eyes soon widened in surprise and possibly fear, and he quickly stood back up to try and decipher the message he’d just received.

A distress call.

Someone was in over their heads and up against multiple senshi and knights. They would be killed if no one responded.

Jet looked back towards the dying senshi in front of him, knowing that if he tried to get his starseed now, it might take at least a couple more minutes to fight with him and subdue him. He really didn’t know if the other officer would have that much time.

Growling to himself, but not hesitating, Jet quickly used almost all of what was left of his energy to teleport away and closer to where the call was coming from. He would come back to the dead body of this particular senshi later and take his starseed then. But right now, someone else needed help.

He thought that maybe, just maybe, Sessrumnir had been right. That maybe, just maybe, Remus had gotten in over his head, and he had taken for granted the fact that he was just a new senshi with not a whole lot going for him.

But he wasn't giving up quite yet, not yet, he couldn't. Remus shut his eyes, trying to ease himself backwards a few more inches, taking a deep, shuddering breath, hand shaking with the effort of still being held out - and he just needed a little bit more energy -

- but then the power signature was gone. It was like an abrupt breath of fresh air, and Remus sucked in a sharp breath, almost a gasp, his brows drawing together in a mixture of confusion and relief all at once.

He did not know what had caused the Captain to leave, but he was not about to question it, not now. Within a few seconds, Remus had powered down, and he fell back onto the grimy alley floor, letting out a half strangled hiss of pain as his back scraped against it. Rolling onto his stomach, Caspian fumbled into his pocket and dragged out his phone, his eyes shut tight against the agony.

He couldn't very well call Cassie, not with zero explanation. But there was one person who had said to call him, so maybe...

Caspian's fingers moved over the buttons until he'd found the right name, and then he hit send, hearing the phone ring until there was a click as someone picked up on the other line.

"Hey," Caspian managed, attempting to sound lighthearted, though it failed. "Remember that...time you said...to call you if I needed help?"

He swallowed hard and closed his eyes again.

"I think...I need help."
