This was is, wasn't it? Before life had thrown them all a horrible curveball, he'd asked Shiloh where his art supplies came from, a casual question with a very specific purpose. Now he finally had a chance to visit and act on the idea he'd had.
Jamie wasn't here for himself, no; he liked to doodle, but he was no artist. The edges of notebooks would suffice for his work. For Shiloh, though... Jamie wanted to get him something special. A good sketchbook had been his first idea, but walking inside had him overwhelmed with all the possibilities. New pencils, inking pens, markers, Jamie had never thought to ask if his friend was interested in other mediums beyond graphite, but boy was it tempting to surprise him, anyway.
Loitering in one of the aisles, he held a pack of pastel copics like precious gems between his hands. They were awfully expensive for such a small set of markers, but he'd heard they were good quality and he'd been saving up. It would absolutely be worth it if they brought a smile to Shiloh's face.

Thorne hadn't been at the art shop in awhile, but while recovering in the hospital there wasn't much to do. And at home there wasn't much to do. At least here he could get peace and quiet and a little bit of amusement every now and again without having nurses doting all over him. The soft ping and click of animal crossing being played echoed across the art shop as Thorne chewed the stylus between his teeth. He was aware of his shop patrons, but he didn't mind much bothering them. He knew that artists usually preferred space, after all. And any questions would be attended to with his full focus. But until then... ping, ping, ping. He was going to kill Aleksy for cutting down all of his apple trees. And then the door jingled and he looked up to see a familiar face ghosting in and up the aisles. Flipping the DS shut, Thorne tilted his head, wondering how best to say hi. Jamie had seemed much less forward than Shiloh. Shy, even. And Thorne wasn't exactly cut out as a very gentle figure. Still, he slid from his seat and came to lean against the shelves along the edge of the aisle. "Hey there, long time no see," he called out, his tone soft and low with friendly intent.

So intent on the markers, Jamie didn't notice when Thorne approached him, though the distance he left was enough that when Jamie jumped and spun, he relaxed again almost immediately. A slow approach was always the best course of action with this particular awkward teenager.
"O-Oh, um, Thorne-!" It was almost a shout, because honestly, Jamie hadn't expected to see him here of all places. Then again, he didn't really know Thorne. What knowledge could he base that assumption on? "You... d-do you work here?" Copics still in hand, Jamie slowly stepped up the aisle towards him. Thoughts of Blackfriars also prodded at the back of his mind and he bit his lip. Was it appropriate to ask? He... hoped after everything that Thorne was okay. They might not truly know one another, but that was what made Thorne's promise to help him back then that much more significant to Jamie. He'd gotten so hurt, too, it was awful to remember.
"Are... you okay? I mean... since..." Stopping, he swayed a bit, fingers clutched tightly at the pack of markers.

Thorne blinked at Jamie, obviously gauging his reaction to him before making any particular mood. All he knew about the kid was that he was a were-bunny and that he was somehow in cohorts with Shiloh. How the two were friends and what that first encounter must have been like was something Thorne would have been amused to find out about, but not just yet. Instead he smiled, a lazy, amicable smile that promised a gentle approach. "Hey there," he said, and added with amusement, "Occasionally. I'm a freelance artist, but even that gets boring sometimes. And I have to have excuses to get out of the house, yeah?" After all, money wasn't a problem for Thorne thanks to a grudgingly bequeathed trust fund and his own accomplishments on the art scene. But the need to have breathing space on the other hand - well... "I didn't know you were an artist though," he added with obvious interest. "Let me know if you ever need anything." At the question he laughed, the sound lilting and pleasurable. His abdomen still ached and the painkillers were in a small bottle beneath his desk, but he was getting there. "I survived, yeah? Physically, I'm getting there. Everything else though? I'm fine." He gave a shrug and looked at the other boy. "Are you though? That wasn't exactly a great place to meet... or a way to end our meeting."

Jamie sighed, letting his eyes slip shut for a moment as the worry ebbed away and relief took its place. "I'm glad... I'm really glad to hear that." Eyes open again, he looked up at Thorne, stuck between the urge to nod and the somewhat weaker impulse to shake his head. "Yeah, I'm okay, too."
It had been long enough now that Jamie was legitimately okay. The only physical injury he'd been dealt had cleaned up nicely, though it would probably scar; people like Thorne had been left in much more dire straights than he had. Mentally and emotionally, though... he was getting there. Friends like Shiloh had kept him from collapsing beneath the pressure as he tried to figure out who he was and what exactly Other Ashdown meant for him.
Friends like Shiloh—that's why he was here.
"Shiloh helped me a lot..." he admitted, knowing Thorne would likely understand which Shiloh he meant. Fingers tapped idly against the markers. "I'm not an artist, but... I wanted to get something for him. A thank you, I guess..." Thank you for helping me, thank you for being my friend, thank you for existing. Shiloh meant a lot to Jamie.
"There's just a lot more here than I was expecting. I don't know what to get..."

Thorne chuckled and smiled at Jamie, his shoulders visibly easing more as he watched the other. After a few weeks loaded on intensive emotions at a nearly violent high, it was nice to be able to relax around someone like Jamie. "I'm glad to hear it. I'm sorry I wasn't able to keep you guys safe." He gave a half-shrug, pushing away from the shelves and looking at the rows of art supplies. He ran his fingers over them with mild appreciation and turned his attention back to Jamie. Even with the events ruled over by Other Ashdown looming over them, he could still revel in this small moment of normalcy at least. "You two are friends, right?" Thorne retorted, a grin on his face. He took a tentative step forward, hoping he wouldn't startle Jamie or anything. "That kids a whirlwind. But I really like him. Those are a good brand especially, I think he'd like them." Thorne rubbed the back of his neck with his hand, flashing tattoos and parallel scars. "I can show you around a bit if you want though."

"We are," Jamie was quick to answer, eyes brightening. "Shiloh's my..." And then there was hesitation, but it only lasted a moment. When he thought of Shiloh, his chest warmed with a lot of things he was still somewhat unsure of and couldn't put a name to. "... my best friend. That's why... I wanted to get something that would make him, um, s-smile." It sure was a tad embarrassing to admit that was his absolute goal.
Red faced, he glanced away, but only long enough that when he looked back, he could see them. A contrast among Thorne's many tattoos were his scars and yeah, Jamie stared, though only as briefly as he had when he'd seem Shiloh's scars for the first time.
The revelation was as surprising as it had been then, too. Jamie didn't know Thorne nearly as well as he knew Shiloh, but it was obvious they'd both struggled through tough times, and Jamie wondered if that was part of what brought them together. It was hard to say and he wouldn't be nosy, but after seeing how worried Shiloh had been about Thorne back at Blackfriars, Jamie knew they meant something to each other.
"I think... I will hold on to these markers just in case but, um, I'd like to see more, too. O-Only if you're not busy..."

Thorne laughed at that, a sound like warmth and honey. He was easily pleased, and the cat's smile was genuine, lazy and plump with satisfaction at knowing that Shiloh had someone his age to care about him like this. To go out of his way like this. "I'm sure it will," he responded, his tone low and crackling with fondness, "and I'm glad. I'm glad that he has you. And you're always welcome here, or wherever I am, if you need help finding something for him or yourself."
Thorne tapped his cheeks at the red face Jamie gave him and laughed. "Don't be embarrassed. I'd give anything for someone to want to make me smile like that. It's rare." People like Jamie. They were rare, and they made Thorne believe that there was a better world out there, beyond all of this.
Thorne dropped his hands and gestured for Jamie to follow him to another row of supplies. "Yeah, of course," Thorne responded with a laugh. "Here - " he pointed out a few sets of supplies, rattling off an abbreviated explanation for each of them from consistency to line-work to the vibrant, long-lasting nature of some. "What does he like to draw?" Thorne asked Jamie.
His smile curved, warm and friendly, on the edge of a wild tease. "How about we strike a bargain? I'll give you a discount for a smile."

Telling Jamie not to be embarrassed was a lot like telling the sun not to shine on a clear summer day, but that didn't mean the kindness was lost on him. It meant something, it really did, because he was softhearted and lonely and thrived on the gentleness he never got from anyone but his parents when he was a kid. They hadn't know each other long, but Jamie was quickly becoming fond of Thorne.
"T-Thank you..." It was muttered, but legitimately appreciative. "I'm... glad I have Shiloh, too." Occupying his nervous tendencies with the markers in his hands, he looked back up at Thorne. "And... I'm... glad you're here. Thank you, um, again..."
Was that too much? Jamie wasn't sure, but he meant it.
"He, uh... he draws my fish for me sometimes. Oh, he really likes turtles, though. I see him doodling them all the time. I dunno if he does much more than pencil stuff, either..." Jamie hardly understood all the ins and outs of everything Thorne tried to explain to him, but he got some of it. What he didn't get was why anyone would be willing to trade discounts for what would surely be a pitiful little smile. That was the biggest mystery here.
"Can you... really do that?" he asked, actually laughing a tiny bit. With it came a small, wobbly smile. "I've never heard of that kind of deal before..."

Thorne tilted his head at Jamie, a low rumble of laughter spilling from his lips. There was a part of him, ruthlessly pleased, that Jamie didn't shy away from his presence the way a lot of other people did when they saw the tattoos. Thorne wasn't exactly the type that looked approachable, and he'd long since given up trying to subdue the masses with a false pretense.
That Jamie was able to look at him without shying away immediately... it was nice. It was different. And it made Thorne burn with a soft, hungry flame of happiness. "It's no problem at all," he said, his tone a purr of amusement, "Find me whenever you need me. I'll always be around if you need to call in a favor."
He laughed at the next set of words, running fingers through his hair and mussing it gently. "Turtles?" Of all the things... His face must have showed his surprise, eyes lighting up at the mention of turtles and fish. A low rumble of sound echoed in his throat and he shook his head, ghosting his fingers along the shelves of copic markers and sketchpads. Things he had horded vapidly as a teenager, back when it had been one of his only two escapes.
His eyes ghosted back to Jamie, merry with wicked delight, something mischievous glowing in them. His laughter curled, slow and warm and amused. "Of course I can. I'm magical, didn't you know?" Thorne shrugged his shoulders, offering his own grin in return. "There's no limit on what I can do."

The surprise on Thorne's face honestly hit Jamie in the best way and the wobbly smile became one a little more sure with amusement. "It's kinda funny, huh? If I didn't know Shiloh already, I never would've guessed his favorite animals were turtles. He gets so excited about them, too..." His thoughts reached back to the night they'd met, grasping onto the memories of Shiloh's excitement. There was an undeniable energy about the way Shiloh had told him they love a good time and I love them, they're so great. Yes, he'd been talking about turtles.
"I dunno what art supplies might have to do with turtles, though..." Was there something that worked better for drawing animals? Was that a thing that existed? Jamie felt so uneducated on the subject. Except he didn't have a whole lot of time to worry about that, not when Thorne was trying to play the magic card. Okay, now he was laughing. It was faint and maybe a little hesitant, but it was there.
"Magical... aren't we all?" It was true, wasn't it? "Remember when I had-" he looked around just to make sure no one happened to be here and dipping on their conversation "-bunny ears?" Still, there was something in Thorne's eyes that had Jamie genuinely curious. Part of him was sure it was all a joke, but another much more gullible part was interested. "Can I... see your art supply magic?"

Thorne laughed, the sound fond and raw, and grinned back at Jamie. His expression was mild, pleased. He ran an appraising finger over the art supplies on the shelf and sighed.
"I would have thought about honey badgers first," he remarked, teasingly, "or a shark. But turtles... turtles fit him. I like it." He dropped his hand, rolling it against the back of his neck. "They're clever devils too. They can sneak across to feeder tanks and eat all of the fish when they want."
He glanced over at the supplies, considering.
"He's a good artist. Depending on what medium he likes most, he could do a lot with turtles," Thorne mused, a rumble of laughter deep in his throat. He glanced back at Jamie, a wicked edge to his curved mouth.
"I suppose so," he remarked, softer than before. "And I remember. You were very handsome, not that the lack of bunny ears has made you any less." He grinned at Jamie. "It seems Ashdown has far more in store for us than we thought. I just moved here to finish pieces for an exhibit and get a bit of quiet, and look what came for me instead."
He smiled again.
"But I'm glad I was able to come here and meet everyone," he added. And his laughter turned wicked. "Very well, if you so dare." saedusk SORRY THIS TOOK FOREVERRR AAA q____q we can wrap it and do postmeta stuff if u still want!!

Eyes widened, then went soft, sheepish, but if one looked close enough, happy too. It would be a lie to claim he'd come to complete terms with himself and his new features. Becoming what essentially amounted to an animal was notably jarring, but Jamie appreciated Thorne's words. Each kindness from others made bearing it a little easier.
"Thanks," he mumbled sheepishly. It might be surprisingly how quickly he turned that around into excitement. "I dare!"
If this magic was as impressive as Thorne implied, Jamie had a feeling he might be going home with more than one present for Shiloh today...
He didn't quite mind. At least he had good company.elkbones IT'S ALL GOOD and I decided to make a little closing post anyway LOL THE END
