Quote:
Normally Seung only went to the park when taking Yeong on a walk, and it wasn’t this park, but here he was - along. He had told Rose, when shopping at her boutique, that he would come here and meet her sister, someone who liked music and could sing. He would not back out, not that he had a reason to anyway. He’d set aside studying for finals, which were just starting in school, in order to come and quench some of his curiosity.

While he passed by another lamp post he wondered where Lily was, how to find right where she would be. The park wasn’t small, at least not from what he could tell, as he glanced about. Raking his fingers through his hair, red and black strand sifting through his fingers, as Seung turned a corner and continued on his hunt for Lily, hoping he could find her via her voice or something equally similar and easy.

Quote:
Lily wouldn't really be hard to find, she was standing on the fountain in the center of the park. A crowd was drawing, small, but a crowd of people eager to place a request. A keyboard was set up, but it wasn't always used. She grinned and waved dressed in a short white dress and cute sandal. A very fitting and dainty look on the girl whose red curls stood out against the outfit, gold streaks in her hair shimmering slightly in the sunlight.

She smiled ready to get started. She loved doing this, people would always gather round and offers up songs for her to sing and give her money, which all went to charity.

“Shall we get started,” she said giving a wave to those gather around.

A little girl grinned and shouted, “yes, do Try Everything, please please please. It's from Zootopia.”

Lily hopped down off the fountain and went over to the keyboard, she could see people pulling out their phones. This would be all over so many social media platforms by the night's end. It happened, Rose actually came sometimes specifically to record her for her channel.

“Alright. First up, Try Everything.” She started playing on the keyboard and grinned at the girl.

“Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

I messed up tonight, I lost another fight
I still mess up but I'll just start again
I keep falling down, I keep on hitting the ground
I always get up now to see what's next

Birds don't just fly, they fall down and get up
Nobody learns without getting it wrong …”

She sung with spirit wanting to fill the audience up with the song.

Quote:
It wasn’t something he was expecting - such a crowd of people. He assumed some people would have gathered but so many - no. He hadn’t expected it but as he came across the gathered people, and what had to be Rose’s sister, he felt a smile tugging at his lips as he approached slowly.

With ripped jeans, a layered shirt that consisted of two thin layers of fabric that was rather loose and allowed air flow, he stood out perhaps a bit but not too much. Listening, and see, a child go up to place a request he got to hear the female sing and she was good, he could certainly agree with the elder sister. Seung had weaved his way through the crowd of people till he could get up front and see better, he was curious and these people had likely been here before, they seemed ready with cell phones and know to place requests - that they’d be accepted.

When people did start to clap he did as well, though not as loudly or as enthusiastically as some people did. It wasn’t a song he knew and perhaps that played a part in it? He didn’t know how she’d done against the original - though she had done very well no matter what.

Quote:
People clapped along and that not only encouraged, but greatly amused her. It was nice to see how people got into it and how music could liven people up. As she finished the song she could see people eager and ready to offer up the next song, but then she noticed a new boy. She bet it was the boy that he sister told her about. She couldn’t be sure, but she smiled at him and waved lightly.

She continued to sing and once the song end she look around the crowd. “I hope everyone enjoyed that, I certainly did.” She got back up on the fountain and smiled, “Okay now I need the next song. I hope you all have some suggestions ready for me.”

Time had changed this, some time ago when she had started, she would just sing whatever came to mind, but as she frequented so did other and it became something of a thing. A small thing, but a thing. Even the park security turned a blind eye to her standing on the fountain, which was something the preferred people not to, thought it was not necessarily disallowed.

She could hear people calling out to be picked and she wasn’t really sure who to pick, but she was glad she spent so much time memorizing song over the years because anything and everything seemed to be thrown at her. She couldn't always do them, but that just added another song to her music library when she got home.

Quote:
Surprised she waved at him, singled him out, he nodded his head once in greeting. So the elder sister had told her, and she was again taking requests, He didn’t request anything but he did listen to everyone else, as it seemed everyone else was indeed clamoring for attention, offer up options for the red haired woman. So many requests and good deal of them he didn’t know, in some cases he didn’t know the artist mentioned either. But mostly it was just a song he didn’t know. Music from the US was played back home but not like the music he was used to, and listened to, artists were known and their bigger hits heard and played but not in the frequency of what he was used to. So it really was no wonder he knew only a handfull of the offered up songs.

Listening to the names he wondered which she would pick, standing there looking around at everyone. At some point the names, the words, all seemed to blend together.

Quote:
She heard someone shouting at her to sing her favorite and she grinned. “My favorite song huh, well it not really what most are use to. Its an older song called Earth Angel. I heard it when I was a really little girl and have loved it ever since.”

She didn’t bother getting down to sing, instead staying up on the fountain and closing her eyes, swaying slightly. She could hear the tune in a head and a moment later she started singing, melodic tones floating over the crowd.

“Oh, oh, oh, oh, wah-ah-ah, oh, oh, oh, oh

Earth angel, earth angel
Will you be mine?
My darling dear
Love you all the time
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you

Earth angel, earth angel
The one I adore
Love you forever and ever more
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you …”

She opened her eyes and continued on through the song. She put her heart into it and it was clear that she really really loved the song. When she finished she took the next suggestion, 7 years by Lukas Graham, then Wild Things, Too Good which she sang with a boy who insisted on doing Drakes part, and Titanium before looking to Sueng.

“I haven't seen you around before and you havent offered up a suggestion yet. Is there something you might like to hear.” Of course she figured this was the boy her sister sent, but either way she thought it might be nice for him to pick. It was the first time he got to come and she tried to pick out newcomers as often as she can.

“How about it, pick my last song of the afternoon for me?”

Quote:
The passion she had, the love, was easy to tell - even a blind person could tell. She loved music...it reminded him of his cousin as well. Seung himself liked music, loved it really, but he couldn’t sing well enough to ever hope to make it into a job, not that he wanted to. There were other things he wanted to do in life but they would never be accepted, he’d upset his family and he couldn’t do that. The course was set already for him...and he admired his cousin, and others who chased their dreams, even more. They were free from such chains, supported even in some cases like Lily seemed to be.

Listening to each new song she took on he did learn them, songs he’d never heard before, and filed away the beat and the lyrics as best he could. He might not remember them unless he heard them again, but they were there in his mind somewhere.

As she turned her focus on to him again he shook his head. “Don’t know many American songs - not from here.” He didn’t think she’d know anything he could suggest. He didn’t know many American songs - only the all too popular ones that a person couldn’t help but hear and know, like Gangnam style here in the US. He still couldn’t believe, even years later, that of all the kpop songs it was that song which had spread to the US and swept across the population and was so well known. Not that Psy wasn’t good but, in his opinion, there was better - a whole genre filled with better songs and better artists. Mostly they were unknown here, save for those that sought out, or were exposed in some way, to Korean music.

Quote:
Lily smiled, “no worries. It doesn’t have to be American. I know a bunch of other songs from around the world. I love music and I love to travel.” She looked to the others around putting her hands on her hips, looking momentarily sassy, though her dress made her look anything but.

“What do you guys say, shall we try something from outside the states?” She grinned at the cheers though some people didn’t seem to know how to process the question. Lily seemed unperturbed, “see, they are all for something new and I’m happy to at the very least attempt something for you? Maybe give me some band or singer names and if I know them then I can pick the song.”

She figured it would be easier that way for them, than trying to figure out an individual song right off. She looked expectantly at Seung hoping he would be game. She knew did know some eastern songs and she hoped that she would be able to sing something he liked a lot.

Quote:
She knew songs from elsewhere...well that was a bit of a surprise, and he wondered if she knew anything from his home country. “Travel is good - get to see more of world.” He answered with a light smile. He wondered, for a moment, where she’d been and what she’d seen and done. He had been to Japan once and now he lived here but he had never gone elsewhere outside of his home country.

“Alright...something from Korea then.” He said nodding his head, ready to play the game with her. “Only place I know much music from. “Something traditional or Korean pop music - do you know either?” He asked, deciding to see which way would be best to go with her. He liked classical music when going to sleep, it was relaxing and calming - peaceful. He didn’t focus on the words just the music and the voices and not the words.

Quote:
She grinned at him when he said Korea, he sister had said that hadn’t she. Lily had almost forgot completely. She gave a small nervous look at the mention traditional because she didn’t know any of that, not at the moment. She however lit up at the prospect of Korean pop music, that she did know.

“Well I definitely know Kpop, it's hit the west by storm and it's growing in popularity. I can’t promise it will be perfect, memorizing lyrics in a language you don't speak isn't always easy, but I know a handful of songs from a handful of groups.”

She looked around and grinned, “Hope everyone is ready to hear a little KPop.” She giggle looking like the sweetest pop star persona and smile at the cheers before looking back to Seung. “Okay I know Sistar, Super Junior, EXO, Girl’s Generation, BTS, and 2NE1. If you like any songs from any of them, just let me know and I sing one for you, to the best of my ability.”

She waited patiently, hoping her selection was large enough for him to pick from. The crowd seemed amused, and while not everyone stayed through her little chat with Seung, other’s looks eager to see how this would go.

Quote:
Ok, so she knew kpop - that was good. “Hallyu wave.” Seung spoke nodding his head once as he said it. When she listed off the groups he lit up and smiled. “Know them all, a fan of them all.” He said as he stepped a bit closer to Lily. Some she might need help with...but some she could cut out the rapping for and do just the vocal part; just the singing.

“BTS, since new album just came out. Can sing Save me?” He asked not sure if she had heard one of the latest songs by the group. “If not than Young Forever or Butterfly.” Wanting to pick something which would suit her voice better. Some of their other songs would not fit at all. He could have picked an SNSD song but BTS was his favorite right now, his personal bias group. The latest album they’d dropped, the most beautiful moment in life part 3, was an amazing album with three new songs and many remixes. The new songs were just...amazing and fit with the group well and the general messages they seemed to give to fans.

Oh, if she could sing any of them he would be pleased - happy really. Looking around at the audience, noting it was a bit smaller, he wondered what they would think of whichever song she sang - what would they think of Korean pop music? Would any look into it? Want to hear the actual song and hear the group?

Quote:
She gave a grin and almost hopped with excitement, “I can sing Save me. I really like that one. I memorized it right away. It’s so pretty. Let’s seee.” She was trying to make sure she had the melody right in her head before she started singing.

“Okay,” she said looking at the crowd, “I think I can do this well enough. The song is Save Me by BTS, you’re going to want to remember that after you’ve heard it, maybe you all will be adding a new song to you libraries today.”

She swayed for a moment before lazily walking partially around the fountain and back again. After a moment she sung, words foreign to most of their ears save Seung and a few others in the crowd. Everyone seemed drawn in though, the song was quite nice and she tried to put her all into it.

“Nan sumswigo sipeo I bami sireo
Ijen kkaego sipeo kkumsogi sireo
Nae ane gathyeoseo nan jugeoisseo
Don’t wanna be lonely
Just wanna be yours

Wae iri kkamkkamhan geonji
Niga eoptneun I goseun
Wiheomhajanha manggajin nae moseup
Guhaejwo nal nado nal jabeul su eopseo (su eopseo)

Nae simjangsoril deureobwa
Jemeotdaero neol bureujanha
I kkaman eodum sogeseo

Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me
I need your love before I fall fall
Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me
I need your love before I fall fall

Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me
Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me.”

She jumped off fountain and just started to dance, knowing this was the part where it was just music and knowing she could wrap, so she he would just dance right though the parts where they were wrapping. She could do the moves well enough, taking the hip hop dance classes in college helped a lot. It was a fun sort of transtion to learn hip hop when all she’d even done was ballet.

“Save me save

Nan aratji neoran guwoni
Nae salmui ilbumyeo apeumeul gamssajul yuilhan songil
The best of me nan neobakke eoptji
Na dasi useul su itdorok deo nopyeojwo ni moksoril
Play On

Nae simjangsoril deureobwa
Jemeotdaero neol bureujanha
I kkaman eodum sogeseo
Neoneun ireoke bitnanikka

Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me
I need your love before I fall fall
Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me
I need your love before I fall fall

Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me
[Jimin] Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me.”

The song was so much fun and she was amused to see little kids dancing along and already they were singing Save Me Save, two of the only words she bet they could make out. She continued to dance throught the rap part and stopping almost abruptly.

“Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me
I need your love before I fall fall
Geu soneul naemireojwo Save me Save me
I need your love before I fall fall.”

Once she finished out the song, she bowed to the audience and came up grinning. “I hope you all enjoyed tonight. I will be back next Saturday, same time.” She waved and watched as the other’s disperse, but moved toward Seung as everyone meandered off.

“I hope you enjoyed it and that I didn’t do too horribly. Am I right and assuming you are the one that visited my family’s boutique.”

Quote:
He had been happy to hear she knew Save me, as it was a favorite of his. Actually, it had been played so much on his iPod that if it were a CD he was sure he’d have worn it out by now - somehow. But like Lily said - the song was good, so how could he not play it so much? The beat was good, the singing from the lineup of singers plus the three rappers in the group. It was hard not to like the song, or the group even.

Listening as she started he stepped forward and decided to join in on certain parts. Where she memorized the song lyrics, and didn’t speak the language, he spoke the language fluently and so the words came easier to him. He didn’t have a voice for singing, not like his cousin or Lily, though it didn’t mean his own was terrible. He sang along to songs enough in the shower, when walking his dog, and other things like that - didn’t most people?

When she started to dance, when had she picked up the dance? She had seen the music video he was sure but how long had it taken her to pick it up? Either way he was able to join in on that as well, along with many children who seemed to enjoy it as well. It seemed some were even singing along to the English parts of the song, as they were predictable. Most Korean pop songs had some English in them in order to been...trendy and to grab the attention of people who weren’t Korean - people who did speak English as a first language.

When she came to a finish he stood there smiling brightly, dark eyes bright and pleased. Maybe some people would be looking up the song and adding it to playlists tonight, maybe they would look into BTS even and add other songs...and tell friends? People who loaded videos of this, as many had been videotaping this on their phones, would get more people looking into the song and group. He couldn’t help but think of the spread of little bits of his culture. In a land where he was the outsider...it was like spreading a few pieces of home and then being able to talk about them with people - a shared interest and a comfortable thing for him.

“You did well.” He said when she came over to him. “Very good for not speaking Korean and with song and video so new.” She had learned both rather quickly, of that he was fairly certain, and she had done well - very well. “Yes, you are. Sister was very helpful and good to me. Surprised you knew songs from my home...is nice to hear.”

Quote:
She smiled bright at the compliment, “thank you very much. I’m happy to know I didn’t butcher the song. I like to think I have a good ear. I think I’ve listened to that song and watched the video maybe 100 times. Some moves I still haven't got, but I’ll get them hopefully.”

She motioned for him to come over and sit with her on the fountain, after singing for nearly an hour and then dancing with the last one she could use a breather. “I’m glad my sister was good to you and helpful. She really good at running the boutique even though I know that’s not what she wants to be doing. She does it for me and my brother, so we can finish school and so we can follow our dreams, but we all work together.”

She leaned back and nodded red curls bouncing about, “Yes I try to keep a wide range because the whole world makes music. KPop is an easy one to pick up on, its really popular, especially on youtube. I think its more popular than JPop. I think people really like the rounded aspect of it. They are all really talented. I hope one day, I get to do this in an arena for hundreds of people, touring the country, maybe the world.”

“My name is Liliana by the way, but everyone calls me Lily. You may call me whichever you like. It’s very nice to meet you. Thank you for spicing up this afternoon singing session.”

Quote:
“No, didn’t butcher it. Most was right but some was a little...not there.” He said not knowing how to word himself properly. “Could help with that.,..and translate songs for you.” Though that might be harder, translating, but he was sure he could do it. He could put some dictionaries to use, he at least knew the words and the meanings to the songs and the lyrics, which was a big thing.

Following her he took a seat himself, she looked a bit tired. He hadn’t done all the singing she had, just the one song and some dancing, he was hardly winded especially when compared to her.

“Is nice of your sister to do so much for you both - very good sister you have.” She was lucky, she had a good elder sister. Seung had only a younger sister, whom he loved very much, and a younger cousin who he treated like a baby sister as she might as well be.

“Yes, is really popular...some more than others...hallyu wave and social media help it.” The South Korean government promoted and pushed the hallyu wave, they worried it might be coming to an end or slowing - he didn’t think it was. But it showed how important it was, he even remembered plans once to build a new city in South Korea and have a lot of it dedicated to all things hallyu. The designs, if he remembered right, had been really impressive. He couldn’t, at the moment, remember the name of it but that was in part due to two projects having been planned around the same time for massive construction in South Korea - neither of which had really started yet and seemed to have flopped.

“Much practice and training for idols in Korea. But you could do it I think - you are good.” He said nodding his head once before smiling and bowing. “Seung, it is a pleasure. Sister called you Lily so I will go with that.” It would be easier for him. “It was an honor...and for you to sing a song not native to here - a language you don’t know. It was very nice of you to do.”

Quote:
“Do you think translating will help? I'm not entirely sure what you mean by not there I'm afraid … like the meaning or like the words.” She looked a little confused, but not at all upset or insulted. It was more a curious look and a honest question.

“Well Rose loves us, she wouldn't really do this for anyone else I don't think. I feel bad though because she's not doing what she wants to do. She’s an actress and a decent one. It summer though and college out for me and should be for my brother so we can run things while she does her thing. I’m sure if we get all hands on deck, the whole household helping than we can make it work so she can take a break. If you know anyone who needs a job, send them our way.”

She grinned and laughed, though she clearly wasn't joking.

“I'm not fully sure what Hallyu wave means exactly, but Korean culture is all over the Internet and they even have conventions. I've never been to one, but you might maybe like it. You should check the convention center website to see if we have one here.”

“Thank you, it's my dream. It has been for as long as I can remember and I can understand training, I've been singing and dancing for years. Ballet training, though I don't have any formal voice training.” That was something she figured she never really needed, this was something of fate for her being the senshi that she was. “In college I had a lot of dance classes and hip hop was a new one I've been doing for a few semesters now. I've found a class outside of school as well and have my personal ballet teacher as well.”

Realistically speaking she wasn't sure if she would ever really make it. She felt tied to the city and the war, but at least for now she could say she was really working toward it.

“It's very nice to meet you too Seung. My sister name is Rose, my mother had a fondness for flowers. As for singing a Korean song, it was my pleasure. Come again some day and request more I would be happy to sing them.”

Her stomach growled and she blushed, “guess I worked up an appetite. Care to join me for a bite to eat, my treat?”

Quote:
“Some words...little off, but not bad. Translation...can give the feeling more...more meaning to song.” And that could translate to when she sang. Sometimes, with songs of emotion and feeling you wanted it to shine through, to be able to portray it and make others feel it better and understand. People here couldn’t see the music video and get the full feel for it and Lily had done really well, but a little more maybe. But maybe he was being picky as well. “Still working on English, not best at it but not needed back home - just for final high school exam. Only learn what is needed for that.” They were taught for the exam, studied for it, dedicated years working up to that one exam. It was what drove some to suicide, and he could understand it. It didn’t surprise him even.

“Cousin is 16...maybe Eunkyung, if she wants, could work and help.” His cousin would be off from school and might want to find something else to do. “But will need weekend off for short trip to New York - KCon, have tickets already.” And those had been expensive, very expensive. “Going to see our elder cousin and enjoy a weekend around our culture.” Not that Korea town, here in Destiny City, wasn’t good enough but...some things it lacked. Not that KCon would be able to fill in for all the missing things but some it would - at least for the time it was going on.

“Hallyu wave...the spread of Korean culture to other countries, drama, music, food, beauty, fashion. All is hallyu. Korean government interested in it, wants to keep it going and spread it more.” He explained as best he could, figuring that was a good explanation of what the hallyu wave was. “Is us sharing ourselves with the world.” As they took a larger, and larger, role on the global stage they were being more open and looking to showcase themselves, as a country, more and sharing more. A lot of that dealt with culture - the hallyu wave. “Don’t know about convention here, I’ll look. But KCon I know...Los Angeles...New York. Now spreading to Paris this year and Abu Dhabi.” Seung said. The culture had been spreading but to see people, to meet people, who knew about it. He’d yet to experience that and seeing someone who already knew about his culture...it made him happy and excited in a way. He hadn’t thought he’d meet anyone, who wasn’t Korean, here in this city who had a clue. He knew that statistically speaking some people here had to have a clue...but to meet them? The statistics against that were high also.

Personal ballet teacher...she had money then...to have a personal trainer of any kind. That would cost a lot, he was sure of that, but she seemed to like dance as much as music and that - that was good. “Will make it - have passion and love for both music and dance.” Ah, Rose and Lily, a flower theme - how lovely.

At the offer of food, and after hearing her stomach, he nodded. “Would be very nice. Please, lead the way.” He said giving her a motion to do so, he would follow at her side. This - this could be a good friendship to have. One that he wasn’t expecting and yet it seemed he would have.
