Between Sunny's advice and Jeremiah and Algie's suggestions to go visit Heliodora, Chris figured it was about time to make another trip to Other Ashdown when he had time off. That day happened to be a Saturday and so he woke up, packed up the knitting things he had gotten for Helidora and a few books he'd collected from Algie, then sent out a text to the kids on if they'd like to go learn magic.
Unsurprisingly, the answer had been a yes, and so one Awkward portal find (involving a bit of wandering downtown) and walk later, Chris was back in the forest with his mind focused on finding Heliodora's demesne. So focused, the only thing he had said so far was a very quick "Stay Close" before he had stalked off into what seemed like a good direction.
He didn't want a repeat of the garden.

Of course the answer had been a yes, even if Jamie's particular brand of yes was hesitant and unsure. It wouldn't have come across in the text, but now that they were here, it was obvious he was nervous. Part of him didn't want to be here. Other Ashdown was spooky in that pretty sure you're gonna turn a corner and die sort of way, and Jamie was already keeping close to both Chris and Shiloh before he'd even been told to. Still, reservations aside, he'd decided it was something he had to do.
Why? Well, Jamie sure knew next to nothing about the moonwalker he'd become, but what he did know was this: avoiding Other Ashdown altogether was completely impossible. Losing his mind with pain and attacking anyone and everything in sight was not an option. So, now he had a choice. Run, hide, and pretend his life was normal—which, to be fair, would've been nice if it was a good choice—or learn what he could so he could actually do something other than fear himself and all these things he didn't understand.
Jamie's only salvation was having people to take these steps with him. He wasn't alone.
"Where do you think we're going...?" he whispered off-handedly, more to Shiloh than anyone, if only because Chris seemed so pinpoint focused that he was in his own world. Tugging Shiloh's beanie (his beanie now, really) further down, he peeked up at the rain through his clear umbrella and sighed.

For all of Jamie's hesitance, Shiloh's yes had been absolutely resounding. It was true that he wasn't fond of Other Ashdown, but they'd been thrown into this mess whether he wanted to be in it or not. He wasn't going to turn a blind eye too it, not if there was something he could potentially do about it.
Shiloh hadn't brought an umbrella, but the one Jamie brought had been large and accommodating and he didn't mind standing under it as he walked. It seemed silly, bringing an umbrella to Otherworld, but it was raining. At least his shoulder was feeling better. It was scabbed and bruised, but healing.
"Dunno." he replied to Jamie, hands slipping into his pockets as they walked. He gave Chris a once over again. "He seems pretty focused... Hey, that looks good on you." he nudged Jamie with his elbow, smiling a little at his choice in headgear, "Wonder where you got it." Typical high school kids on a typical field trip with a typical chaperon. Felt hilariously normal, in a way if you didn't think about where they were and what they were doing.

Heliodora was in her grove, in her mossy mangrove throne, dozing. Her hands lay still in her lap, and her face was peaceful despite the ice that was slowly growing and taking over her body. When she was still, it was easy to see the tendrils pulse in time with her heartbeat. She opened her eyes when Chris and his two students entered the clearing, and offered a groggy smile. Her eyes proved to be bloodshot and swollen from crying, and her smile shook apart as she looked at Jamie. Heliodora turned her attention to Chris: "Mr. Watts. Hi!"

Chris breathed a small sigh of relief as they entered, having gotten to the grove safely without anything happening. It was one small thing down on a much longer list of things he had today.
"Hi Heliodora," He smiled, "It's good to see you. I came to ask you something, but I also have some books and knitting for you." He took note of her eyes, but didn't call attention to it yet. He'd ask that question when he was sure Jamie and Shiloh couldn't hear.
Speaking of them, Chris turned back to make sure they were nearby, glad to see them under the umbrella. "Oh, I also have Jamie and Shiloh with me," He introduced, "They're my students."

The worried look on Jamie's face had melted into a temporary smile at Shiloh's compliment. "I dunno where," he'd replied. "I just kinda found it, I guess."
Any semblance of normalcy, any fun and games between friends, had gone straight out the window when they came upon Heliodora, though. Mr. Watts reacted in that same calm, collected way he always seemed to, acting as if none of this was at all unusual. Jamie wondered if he'd ever feel that way about the things they'd seen. He wondered if meeting a woman, her body grown one with ice, was something he just should've expected by now.
"Heliodora..." he repeated the name Chris had revealed under his breath, eyes locked on her. Was it just his imagination or did she not seem all that happy to see him? He shuffled closer to Shiloh nervously.

Shiloh wasn't really sure what to expect either.
She didn't look that much older than they did, and Chris seemed nonchalant as ever. The two seemed to know each other if anything, and if the Mr. Watts! was anything to go by...
Heliodora seemed sad, real sad, for reasons that Shiloh didn't know why. He still knew the puffy-eyed, bloodshot look well, and it wasn't a good one. Then again, he wasn't about to ask a stranger why they were hurting, and Jamie (being his actual friend and all) seemed nervous about the whole thing so he focused his attention there. He puffed up, stood a little straighter, hand patting his back Hey, it's okay.
"Do you need a jacket? You look cold." Maybe it was the ice encroaching on her body. Probably. His jacket was thick and he felt clammy with all the rain around him, so he didn't really need it, besides the fact that his logic was still running according to Normal Ashdown.

"Hi," said Heliodora to the pair of boys. "Shiloh… Beaumont, right? We were in bio together, before. I think." Her attention drifted to Shiloh and she looked at his coat. "I'm alright. It's very temperate here for me." She closed her eyes for a moment. "I'd love new books, I already finished all the ones Mr. Mixlin brought me like, five times."

"You're in luck then, I got some recommendations from him," Chris replied, moving forward and opening his bag. Bergamot decided this was when to make his appearance, having snuck into Chris' bag, and he eyed Heliodora for a second before prancing over to her for a pet, finding her fine.
"That's Bergamot, who decidedly should not be here," Chris added, giving the kitten a look (which was ignored), as he pulled out the books. "I also picked up some knitting stuff, if you'd like to try? I know you're good with your hands."
Another glance at the boys though reminded him why he was here. "Oh, I wanted to ask if you were okay with me teaching magic here? It seems the safest place to do it and I'm not very great at it yet." There was a bit of a smile there, but still a look of worry.

Somehow Shiloh always knew what Jamie needed to start settling down, even if it was just a firm, reassuring pat on the back. Or maybe it was because it was Shiloh. Maybe anything would've sufficed.
"H-Hello... nice to... meet you..." was his best attempt at a predictably formal response.
Of course, he was still a tad on edge, and seeing Bergamot shoot out of Chris's bag and immediately over to Heliodora made his stomach twist for reasons he didn't want to admit. "B-Bergie...!" he stuttered and took a small step forward. Except he caught himself and immediately took that same step back. He was the guest here, Jamie reminded himself.
Clamming up, he let his eyes drop back to his shoes, hand squeezing tighter around the umbrella handle.

Shiloh tensed when Heliodora said his name, but the second she mentioned Biology, things sort of clicked into place. Honestly, he hardly paid attention in school, whether it was the subject matter or the people he attended it with.
"If you say so," he murmured, taking the jacket off regardless. They were here to learn magic, right? He didn't need this stuff getting in the way. The concept sounded kind of cool, if not completely terrifying. Still, it'd be something in his arsenal that he could use. It could potentially be the thing that saved his a**.
"How come you're cartin' your cat around, Chris?" he knew Bergamot had snuck in by Chris' reaction, but he was easy to tease all the same. "And then you take us here to practice without even askin' for permission before hand? Yeesh." Ruuuuuuude.
He bumped against Jamie's shoulder again. "Somethin' about teachers thinkin' they can just do whatever the hell they want, am I right?" he joked to Jamie, placid and casual.

"Oh, hello, you precious thing," said Heliodora, plucking up the kitten and settling him in her lap. "I think I met your brother, didn't I?" She was completely smitten with the cat, which was an average reaction to cats for her, not that Chris would know that. "Of course you can teach here," she said. "I'm bored and lonely when Pax isn't around." Which was more and more often lately, but her handmaid often got restless around mid-month. Heliodora smiled at Jamie and Shiloh. "I won't hurt him. He was born here, you know."

"You've met him before Shiloh, you know what he's like," Chris said offhandedly, still adding to the pile of books and knitting he was leaving Heliodora. "It's not like I can text or call either. Unless I can? I've been texting Sunny which is really weird to think about. I try to not, honestly."
Bergamot was currently ignoring Chris in absolute favor of Heliodora giving him attention and affection, his crest of vines already starting to form buds. She obviously knew what was important, unlike Chris, and he butted up against her hand for pets. "He isn't as well mannered as Hellbine unfortunately," Chris said with amusement, watching the cat.
"Thank you for letting us stay, although Pax um. Isn't around, are they?"

There was a noticeable slump to Jamie's previously rigid shoulders when Shiloh bumped against him. "You might be right," he ventured, not sounding overly enthusiastic about the joke, but hey, he was trying. It was hard when he found himself standing there, unsure what exactly to do, a slurry of nervousness and worry in his gut. This had seemed like a good idea at the time, and honestly it likely still was, but Jamie never failed to hit that awkward wall when the time came to actually accomplish a difficult goal.
"O-Okay..." was the response he muttered for Heliodora, trusting more in the fact that Chris believed in her than her own words of assurance. He felt bad for doubting, but anything unusual about Other Ashdown, including the woman incased in ice, was taken with a suspicious grain of salt.
"Who... is Pax exactly?" he asked. "A-And... what is this place....?"

"Hey hey, wasn't sayin you would." Shiloh held his hands up submissively as Heliodora busied herself with the cat, though his tone was hardly defensive. It was more relaxed than anything. If she wanted to occupy Bergie's attention, then that was fine by him. They came to learn magic anyway, or something...
Actually, that reminded him. "Is it normal to just... develop stuff?" he was asking Chris now, attention turned to him, "I mean like, magic stuff." he hadn't yet told anyone aside from Jamie about how he could arbitrarily conjure up balls of light, and Jamie only knew by being present when it first happened. "It's sort of like, a light... thing? I'm still having trouble getting it to come when I want it to." he wasn't trying to be vague, but the whole thing was still rightfully confusing to him.
"But anyway, like Jamie said. Where are we exactly?" he was looking from Heliodora to Chris and then back to Heliodora. "It's sort of... nice here compared to, well, everywhere else. Might be nice for drawing." now he was looking around the glade, a little more at ease as he rocked back and forth on his feet.
