A horrible fetid odor lingers over the marsh. The odor is said to stem from the many bodies that lay beneath the murky water. Towards the center of the marsh, a single solitary structure remains standing. Evil spirits capable of changing their form are said to lurk the marsh, playing dark tricks on unsuspecting individuals and dragging the naive down to their doom.

The Lich
____________________________________________________________________

Stationed atop the solitary house towards the center of the marsh, sat a figure guised in a frayed, tattered robe, hunched over the writings of an ancient tome. Back and forth the figure rocked on the rocking chair, humming a soft tune as it did so. It wouldn’t be much longer until he had to begin collecting once more. The Lich drew his boney fingers under the name of one of the souls he was ready to collect. It read “Jeanne Waylander.” Within a matter of seconds, the book emitted a soft, pale blue glow. The Lich raised his hand into the light, and withdrew a small white orb inked with blue lines that waved across the surface of the orb. The light faded back into the book, leaving him with the orb.

The Lich sat up straighter as he examined the orb with greater interest, drawing it close to him. Every single one that he had ever held was always somewhat different than the last, even if the differences were only minor. This orb was smaller and more fragile than most. He supposed it belonged to that of a young, sickly girl. No, the Lich didn’t feel sympathy for the girl for losing her life so early. Instead, he felt joy. This girl would now have the freedom to do what she couldn’t in life because of her ailments. She would no longer feel pain, or hunger. She would no longer have to suffer from the anguish of knowing the emotional stress she inflicted on those who cared about her as her body wilted away. She was free.

The Lich held out the hand with the orb, and released it into marsh wilderness. He watched as the wisp flittered away, fading into the island’s mist. After the specter had finally vanished from sight, the Lich returned to his book, singing aloud now as he did so, and rocking back and forth.

☾"Know a little ...

Zana reached the edge of the marsh lands. Like usual the smell was nauseating but it was neutralized to some extent due to nights being cold hence the smell was not so bad. The humid fog that usually hung over the marsh was thinner that night as the moonlight shone brightly which helped her navigate through the marsh. Of course she would not swim or touch that swamp water... who knows what was in it to make it so. Zana was keeping herself a few inches above the marsh water as she manipulated a thin circle of air around her. Most who would travel on this route would probably loose their way and die somewhere since this was basically a black zone... but zana is able to pinpoint the location where a concentration of life essences resided. As she got closer to her destination a shabby looking shack that stood above the marsh on planks that look as if it could cave in at any moment stood. Before she reached the front patio of the shack she could hear the rocking of a chair and someone singing and so she made her presence known as she did not want to be mistaken as an intruder. "Hello, my name is Zana... I am not sure if you remember me but I come with apples" Zana quietly but respectfully spoke. She waited outside for a response with her hood up and her hands holding a bag of apples tightly.

The Lich

____________________________________________________________________

The rocking and the song song came to a sudden cessation, as the Lich heard the greetings of his visitor. After a thought-filled pause, the Lich finally spoke. "Ah- Zana." His voice was crisp and relaxed, and it echoed with the hushed whispers of a thousand lost souls, calling out from beyond the grave. "You have not visited these lands in quite some time. One might be so bold as to say that they thought you to be dead." A rippling chorus of laughter escaped the Lich, who clearly enjoyed the wittiness of his own remark. "Why do you wait still at the foot of my humble abode? Come up here so that we may have a proper conversation." As she began her ascent, he posed a question to her, once more rocking in his chair. "Tell me, why do you so willingly sojourn the Lost Isles? Surely you do not seek the company of an old, decrepit soul such as myself. And you have not come to rob me of my belongings. You are still so full of life, so why come to the land of the dead?" As Zana would near the top of the steps, the waist-high gate to the patio would unlatch and drift open.

Zana sighed in relief. It has been a few years since she last visited but she was glad that the Lich still remembered. She chuckled at his try to make a joke even if it was morbid in a way; but if she did pass away she was sure he would notice as her life essence would end up in his hands either way. Walking up to the waist-high gate that would open by itself she smiled at how she found that more welcoming then eerie. To most they would probably have run back if something like that happened in a place like this. Stepping into the shack like place she peeked into the door playfully as she held an apple. "Of course I came too see my favourite Lich who is living yet not; why else would I be here?". Zana voice was playful but still respectful towards the Lich. "I apologize for not visiting often; I have been distracted with what goes on in the land of the living... it has been very active recently". Stepping into full view now she pulled her hood down as she stood in the empty space by the door.

The Lich

____________________________________________________________________

The Lich, upon seeing the blonde, closed the book resting on his lap and crossed his hands over the cover. "Many people come in search of things that they cannot have." He turned his attention towards the vast stretch of marsh sitting in front of him. "They come, begging me to instill life in the bodies of their loved ones, though I will not. Others come because they seek power that they cannot wield. But only one has ever come to me with the notion of holding an amicable conversation." The Lich's empty eye sockets fell upon Zana once more. "Yes- you are quite the odd one, aren't you?" His voice held a sense of curiosity within it. His hood bobbed up and down, as he nodded gradually towards her. "You need not apologize for your absence. I imagine we might be able to talk with greater frequency once your time in the realm of the living comes to an end." The Lich spoke plainly, as if he were discussing the weather over a cup of coffee. "Yes, the living have been working me down to the bone, with all of their senseless slaughter." He snickered modestly at his own joke. "You do not partake in their silly war, do you?"

☾"Know a little ...

Zana looked at the Lich who really did not look like he was part of the living. She looked down at her hand where she held and apple and grinned at the quick thought that passed her mind. How can a Linch even enjoy an apple... where would it go. Looking back up at the Lich as she was listening carefully to his words. She did not know why she would visit such an entity; perhaps she felt compassion for the old soul that has lived longer than her, maybe it was because she wanted to see if he would finally offer up some juicy life essences, or maybe she just wanted to do something that she would wish someone would do for her in her long lonely life. "Well, you will need to wait a longer time before you can have my life in your boney hands". Zana smiled as she teased the Lich because she would live longer then most humans and well she would live for quiet a long time as long as she took in her share of life essences. "Perhaps I can take some of that life essences off your shoulders" Zana looked at the Lich mischievously as this would benefit both of them in a sense. But she knew it was a slim chance he would offer up his precious souls. Looking up at the Lich not knowing where to look for his eyes where hollow but she could feel him looking straight at her as he asked about the war. " I find the war amusing but I do not involve myself directly even if I got involved I would not know which side to play in". she answered the Lich honestly as she really did think the war was more like a game of chess. "Have you seen anything worthwhile with the souls you have collected about this war?" zana asked without any intentions of an answer she was just curious. "I would find it more amusing if you the Lich stepped out of this marsh lands and decided to take up the war". Throwing up the apple in her hand as she caught it she offered up the apple towards the Lich.

The Lich

____________________________________________________________________

The Lich knew that it would be some time until Zana eventually met her end, but what she considered a long time was nothing more than a blink to him. She would come to realize this too, given enough time.

The Lich was displeased to hear Zana's request. Despite the enjoyment that he found from this strange source of company, it would appear that no other being could come to truly understand the beauty of the soul as he had. A cold sigh escaped the Lich, and he shook his head in denial. "I cannot give you any souls. When a soul leaves its body it is graced with the ability to live eternally from that point forwards. It has the power and the freedom to do what it could not in life. No one deserves a second death; one that would forever banish them from all of existence. And every soul must be treated with utmost care, whether it be that of a criminal or that of a saint." He paused for a moment, knowing that it was a feeble thing to try to explain to anyone who was blind to the beauty of the soul.

The Lich was pleased however to find out that his companion was not directly participating in the war. "It is indeed quite amusing to look upon the petty squabbles of mortals that are far too eager to join the legions of the Lost Isles."

He shifted slightly in his chair. The next question that Zana had proposed to him had thrown him off-guard, as he did not fully understand it. After a minute, he managed to answer her question to the best of his ability. "As I have said, all souls are equal. I do not determine their worth, nor do I use them for my own purpose."

The Lich knelt forwards and grasped the apple Zana had offered him. He rose it in front of his face, and tilted his head back and forth as he examined the apple. "The fruits of your labors might go uneaten, but it is a beautiful sight to behold is it not?" He continued turning it about in his hand in a careful, meticulous manner. "I have no desire to participate in this war, nor any that would come subsequent to it. War is a meaningless thing. Those who prevail will perish, and their kingdom and their legacy will be forgotten given enough time. I have more importunate matters to deal with."

☾"Know a little ...

Zana looked at the Lich a bit disappointed that she seemed to have offended him; but somehow she couldn't shake off the funny feeling that she was being lectured by an old grandpa. Either way it was still enjoyable too feel such funny feelings; but what he seems to not understand is that she appreciated the souls in a different way. The souls provided her with emotion and life; almost like nutrients that humans need to live. To her the souls would not go to waste because it would be giving her a chance to live longer and may even save a tragic soul that she may take before it's time. Looking out the window the sun was slowly starting to rise a new day was coming. "I understand your perception on the souls but I too find beauty in them just in another form". Slowly putting up her hood she looked at the Lich smiling warmly as she put a bag of apples down on the floor. "The beauty in life just like these apples is that you need to appreciate its beauty before it fades away". Turning around as she started to make her way out the door she looked at the Lich once more "I will visit again; I must return to my ruins of a home. I feel a visitor looking for me please forgive my sudden visit and leave". Just as she came she left in a circle of air into the marsh where the fog engulfed her.
