It's become a habit since turning that first corner. To try and look and see and find the right doorways, the special corners, the invisible borders between the world and the Other. She peers through her blue boy's eyes more and more often, just quick glimpses to check his perspective, both small and on high and shaded in a hundred more colors than she could ever name.

America doesn't find The Way but after a week or so, she passes through a cemetery gate, trying to find more familiar pieces to match up to her mother's album and steps into a grim, drizzling scene. She lets out a breath and a weight was lifted, the one that bore the idea that last time had been the last time. The only time she'd see this place and have the chance to explore and immerse herself in this other world.

There is silence in the cemetery.

Except for the occasional noise.

An excited high-pitched noise.

It sounded something both human and not.

The Otherness of the sound had her heart jumping, buoyed up and up toward her throat with excitement and just enough fear to make her watchful as she followed the sound. Just enough to add a bit of waver to her voice as she called out, "Hello? Somebody here?"

There was a tail that was swishing and just visible around the curve of a large tree.

Shadows swirled, darker here even with the dreariness of this place.

At the sound of the voice, the tail went still. A moment passed and the tail disappeared around the bend of the tree.

The shadows moving with it.

Two white eyes peeked around the curve of the tree a moment later, the only thing visible.

"Not a somebody here."

The tail caught at her gaze, drawing her closer even as it disappeared and was replaced by strange eyes. Coming closer, America offered with a cautious smile, "Well, I see a onebody at least. How do you do?"

"Not a onebody either," was the reply.

The shadows shifted and moved, curling around the tree and going up to the first branch.

Those eyes were still watching her and the only thing visible.

"M'fine." Very suspicious sounding. "What're y'here for?"

"Point made," she laughed softly, a bit of that excitement turning more nervous. "I'm here to explore. To learn more about this place," America answered honestly gaze meeting the speaker's firmly. "Learn more about magic. You seem..." she gestured at it with a nod, "...pretty magical, gotta say."

"Oh." As if America's reasons had not even been a consideration. "That's what y'doing here?"

The shadows came together, a tail visible at first and then a long body and eventually a head with ears. A pine marten, or maybe a weasel, was there now. He was black as pitch, bits of darkness raising up and away from him and disappearing away.

"M'pretty magical," he agreed. "Who're ya?"

"Well aren't you kind amazing?" She was torn between its spooky coolness and its shadowy fluffy wuffie-ness. Thankfully, they registered as not just person but adult person, so the impulse to talk all cutesy adoration was easily squelched as disrespectful.

"I'm America Jones." She holds out her hand, a finger crooked obligingly, should they want to shake hands like Zac's Mr. Owl. "Who might you be?"

If he could have preened, he would have. Instead he ended up leaning towards the crooked finger and sniffing. A paw reached out and wiggled in greeting.

He could not quite reach her finger and he was not ready to come down yet.

"M'Gloom," he replied. "Y'named America? Like ... the bigger place the other side is part of?"

"Same as," she confirmed, "we share a birthday, so my family decided we might as well share a name as well." The girl lowered her hand with a smile, a little eased by a familiar question.

"Pleased to meet you, Mr. Gloom. Do you live around here?"

An appropriate place for such a name, if so.

A pleased chitter escaped, the shadowed creature finally moving back down the tree. The darkness around him moved as he did, curling around the tree until he was on the ground in front of her. His tail swished lazily behind him.

"It's just Gloom." Glowing white eyes watched her. "Or - no, just Gloom. I don't live here, I was looking for something."

Crouching down to be more on eye level, America regarded Gloom with interest. "What were you lookin' for, hun? I've got a bit of time if you need some extra eyes." Exploring was nice, but exploring with a bit of purpose was always an improvement.

Crouching just meant that Gloom was winding his way around her feet. "Rocks and dust and things," he replied, "but special things." As they were not just normal things, the rocks and dust and things.

"Thought they might be here but they're not."

"How're they special?" America asked, eyebrows going up. The motion around her feet has her holding out her hand again, not quite petting him, but offering it as an option.

"Though I guess dust from a graveyard sounds a pretty spooky sorta special on its own, gotta say."
