June had her ways of ~knowing things~ and one such thing she knew was that a man with a last name of Kuroda had been declared Not Guilty earlier this week in New York for murder and extortion. She didn't want to assume Shun was in any way involved, but she was curious if the last name was a coincidence or not.

While making her rounds with a box of donuts for all of the cops (even if it was a stereotype, everybody loved donuts and June was the thoughtful kind of person that went and bought them for the whole floor), she stopped at Shun's little corner and knocked on the wall. "Mr. Kuroda? Donuts if you want some?"

Who could deny a donut served by a person with June's sweet smile anyway?

Shun had been reviewing some details in a case file he had on hand when June came by with the box of donuts. Now, he had some serious mixed feelings about this. Sweet treats were not something he indulged in often, but now and then they were alright. But having donuts while at the precinct...

It made him feel like a stereotypical cop. Which he didn't really care for.

So as to the question of who could deny a donut from a sweet thing like June?

This jackass.

"Pass. Thank you," he uttered, not looking at the box. He just continued to flip through a few photos, studying their details.

"What?" she asked somewhat innocently. "But they're fresh-baked! And if I put them in the break room they're tooootally going to go missing after lunch."

He shook his head, still not looking up from the photos. They were just some crime scene pictures of a breaking an entering case at a local store.

"That is fine. Others can enjoy them, then," he stated. The donuts were kind of tempting, but he was determined to resist.

She fidgeted awkwardly in the doorway, rubbing the corners of the donut box.

"I actually had a question to ask you ... if you had time."

With that, he let out a sigh, putting the images down. Shun turned to finally look up at June.

"Yes?"

She looked around for the odd shelf or table to set the box on and after doing so looked at him somewhat awkwardly, fingers buried in the folds of her latest sweater dress. She didn't look uncomfortable so much as she looked small. But then, June always looked small.

"So I have this friend in New York and she was telling me about a murder case ... well the accused- his last name was Kuroda. I thought it was kind of a funny coincidence, you know? Small world and all that." She laughed a tiny laugh.

Overall, Shun's expression didn't change, but somehow it seemed to darken as June brought up a particularly sore topic.

"What about it?" he asked lowly with a touch of wariness in his tone. He wasn't sure where June was getting at with this, but he wasn't liking this direction thus far.

June noticed the change and tread very, very carefully. She had picked up some minor vibes both from their encounter during the meeting and just being around the office/him in general. Shun was a prickly cactus.

"Oh. Nothing. I was just wondering if you'd heard. That was all." She wasn't about to crack that bee's nest open.

"Yes. I have heard," he replied simply. Shun still wasn't really sure what she had been trying to get at with that conversation starter. But it was the wrong one to use with him. He did not want to be reminded of how horribly he had failed, and how he had effectively put himself into this situation to absolutely no avail.

He could have still been in New York. But here he was instead, in a town full of people who are too nice, with a bunch of magical nonsense mixed in with it.

These thoughts made him bitter.

"Your face is a little ... Er ... Are you sure you don't want a donut?"

She sighed a little. "I filed your paperwork and I know you're from New York so I thought you might be related to the guy." She just wasn't good at lying or being sly. She was a very earnest person; even a little bit pathetic.

Shun didn't answer her first question. He just gave her a look, which hopefully should have been enough to drive the point that no he did not want a donut, especially now.

"Yes. Well, you are not wrong."

He saw little sense in lying about that, even if that knowledge sometimes lead to some level of distrust towards him. Even so, he didn't wish to dive into details.

"Oh."

Well now she was in an awkward position. If she said "yay your dad's free" he might not be happy about that if his dad truly was a murderer and extortionist (which her friends at NYPD had been pretty sure of). If she said "god that sucks he got off" then Shun might be offended if he had strong familiar ties.

So instead she put on her Customer Service smile and said, "Is it something you feel comfortable talking about or is it more personal?"

Rather than saying anything, Shun just continued to glare at her. After what probably felt like too long, he just turned back towards his desk.

"I have work I need to do. You best take those donuts to the breakroom while they are still fresh," he uttered.

June shrank only a little under the gaze before puffing her chest out a little bit. She was a public consultant after all.

"I see. Well if you ever need assistance with anything it is technically my job as police correspondant ... buuut I can also offer my services as a really good listener." She giggled a little and picked up the box, taking it out the door.

But a few minutes later, she came back with a single donut on a paper towel, and set it down on the same side table. "I'll just leave it here, okay?"
