Ding-dong went the doorbell. It always felt so weird not going to Connor's apartment when she was literally at the same place. The same was true when going to Connor's place; it felt like she should have seen Ripley, yet they never crossed over.

"Ripley, my darlin' damsel in distress," she wailed at his doorway with a hint of sarcasm. "Your prince has arrived~" And with her came a 6 pack and a bar of chocolate.

He felt bad when he felt the need to lean on her like this. Every time. Thankfully it wasn't an entirely common occurrence, but still. The guilt was there, even when she assured him it was nothing. He made a mental note to treat her to something nice later, for all her trouble with him. In the end, despite the guilt, he had called her, and all he could do in the mean time was sit on the floor, slouched with his knees propped up, his back to the couch and his head tilted back enough to rest against the cushion.

That was how he sat, in silence, until he heard the familiar and only slightly sarcastic wail at his door.

Even then, he didn't move. His eyes did open though, and he slid his gaze to the door.

"My Hero.." He drawled flatly, loud enough to be heard. "Door's open." If she took him up on his offer, she'd find what she could see of his one bedroom apartment - which was really only the living room, where he currently sat - to be almost as spotless as ever. The only mess was the occasional discard of clothes. It seemed he had started stripping at the door. His suit jacket had been abandoned near his shoes. The matching vest crumpled in a pile a few steps later. His belt on the floor a pace or two beyond that. That was it, until she could spot him at his seat against the couch, his tie loose and his dress shirt open a few buttons at his neck.

"Lock the door." He reminded her, as he did every single time. "Please." He added belatedly, never one to forget his manners.

The thing was, it wasn't really leaning for Chel. There was no weight she sagged under. She was a sponge for this kind of thing, being what people needed before disappearing into the night like a caped crusader. She could listen to Ripley drawl on as much as he wanted as long as it didn't involve her needing to get deep too.

When she entered to see him on the floor she rolled her eyes. Such a small little thing and yet he was so predictable.

The door was already locked with a soft click before he got through his sentence. "Aww there's my bawlin' baby," she teased, but in the way one teased a good friend.

She sat on the floor shoulder to shoulder with him and set the beer on his lap. "One six pack for the lovely damsel." She leaned over and kissed his cheek. "And a kiss as my reward."

Despite her teasing, the feel of her shoulder pressed to his was already a good start.

"Hilarious." Ripley grumbled to pretty much everything she said, belatedly. Aside from the kiss to his cheek, of course. That was fine. "Good thing you're easy to please." He sighed, lifting his hands off the floor to work at freeing one of the cans, offering it out to her. Ladies first, after all.

"How'd your day go?" It was a lame conversation starter and he knew it, but he didn't want to be rude. Plus, her day was not his day, and by that definition alone, he wanted to hear about it.

Chel took a can and cracked it open without protest; she wasn't one of those "no no, you first" types.

"My day was aight. ******** a cop- that's excitin' right?" The fact that he was a cop was independent of ******** him, but Chel thought the way she'd phrased it was more exciting.

"Found a place I might start workin' at." Which was definitely more eventful than the cop but Chel didn't want to dwell on it too much. She hadn't held a job in almost 3 years now.

Ripley snorted in amusement. Chel ******** a cop today? Well then, that was pretty exciting. "You should play bingo with your sexploits." He freed a second can from the group for himself, and put the rest on the floor on his other side, not wanting anything else to get between them. "Why a cop, though?" He pressed, suddenly at least a little curious. "Weren't trying to get out of something?" If anyone could, it was Chel…or so he supposed.

At the mention of a job, he tilted his head, looking down at her suspiciously.

"Are you feeling alright?"

"No," Chel said with a frown to his first question. "Not sayin' I wouldn't." She so would. "But he just needed t'get laid. So I helped." She said this as she would say she helped a friend with their math homework or helped an old lady across the street.

To the second question she shoved him (lightly, fragile child) and said, "

"A regular philanthropist." Ripley snickered. "Was he at least good?" Raising his can in a toast to her before taking a long drink. When he finally came up for air, he wiped the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand...and was promptly (though gently) shoved, which meant he now had to adjust his seating arrangement again.

"Hah." Maybe. He added mentally. "Okay. I'll bite. What's the job?" It was pretty impressive that she had potentially found one, after all.

"Seven eleven," she said. As in, being the cashier in the tacky shirt dealing with crazy people. "Try not t'be too impressed or nothin'."

She noted the long drink but said nothing about it until he was ready to talk about it. Ripley was like that. "And yeah, he was aight. A little injured so y'could tell he was holdin' back and that's never fun." But Chel was rectifying this because she was definitely going back for more later.

"Hey, a job's a job." Even if it wasn't a 'glamourous' one, it was still a job, and money was money. "Plus, slushies." Which were always a bonus, though he didn't sound terribly thrilled about it; not that he ever really sounded terribly thrilled by many things.

"Ah. Well, next time." He knew her well enough to know she'd try her best for a next time. There was a small pause as he pondered over what to say or do next. Honestly, he didn't want to say anything. He wanted to keep talking about her, because her life was far more interesting...but that wasn't how conversations worked, and despite his general dislike of talking about himself in any capacity, he did have to suck it up. To save the silence, he occupied his time with another drink from his can, as he searched his recent days for anything worth commenting on. Luckily, he came up with something fairly out of the blue (for him) that he felt she might appreciate.

"Someone gave me their number the other day."

"Slushies all day erry day," she agreed. Chel definitely intended to steal as many energy drinks as possible too. She was going to be an excellent cashier.

She let him have his silence and drank from hers too. Normally they did this with cartoons or something but it seemed Ripley didn't even have the energy for that. That's how she knew it was serious.

When he did speak up, she gasped loudly. "Who's tryna steal you from me? Do I need t'fight fer yer hand, princess?" She snickered at her own joke and put her arm around him in a near-chokehold, one step away from a noogie. "Was she hot?"

"No." Ripley grumbled as she pretty much threatened to fight this newcomer. "I doubt I'll use it." Because he knew himself, and his habits, and unless something drastic happened, it'd probably just be another number in his phone. Alas. His grumble turned into a small noise of protest at the near-chokehold, to which he grabbed her wrist with his free hand, being extra careful to not spill either of their drinks.

"He." He corrected, unashamed. "And yes."

Chel raised an eyebrow at his self depreciation. "Why not use it? He wasn't ugly soooo ...?" So there had to be something else right? Like a rude personality or a small d**k. Chel didn't perceive people she picked up as much more than their immediate impressions.

The near-noogie stopped and turned into something much more relaxed, just an arm around a friend.

Ripley went quiet.

How else could he explain he didn't want to meet other people, because it was someone new to disappoint when he inevitably started to cancel on them? That one night stands with strangers, while horribly tempting, might damage his reputation? His reputation meant so much to him, because it was literally his livelihood - he couldn't trust the public to be okay with someone in his position being that sort of promiscuous.

He was fairly sure nobody would ever notice, but it was definitely a very real concern for him.

"I prefer to live vicariously through you." He decided, after his pause. It wasn't a lie, of course; he didn't like to lie. Her grip on him relaxed, and he took the moment to slide a free hand around the small of her back, pulling her close against his side.

"So." He hummed, ready to push off of that particular subject. "What are we watching today?" Tradition dictated a bad day meant cartoons - which was really the only time he watched them, though it was arguable as to whether or not he even did that - and so far, it was just the two of them.

Chel snorted. Vicariously indeed; Chel probably often sent photos she shouldn't have to Ripley. He was a good sponge.

She kissed the side of his insecure little head and said, "Spongebob." You couldn't go wrong with that yellow ********. She was happy to let the subject lie, but tested the waters just in case he really did need to talk about it. "Y'could always just go on a date. Like. No dicks involved." Not Chel's idea of a date, but she knew some people did it that way.
