Things were, for the first time in a long while, going well for Aurostibite.

And not just well, he thought, as he stood now on the parapet of a rooftop, looking out across the city. Not just well, but satisfying. He had formed, unexpectedly, a team of sorts, though his methods of teaching his new recruits lay in letting them figure things out for themselves while he guided them quietly in the right direction.

But it had been a long while since Aurostibite had felt anything more than what he had deemed himself - a dog of the Negaverse, to do nothing more than the most basic to get by. Now he felt a sense of accomplishment and pride in his work, and how far he'd come.

It was a good feeling.

A gust of wind blew past him, a gentle breeze that rifled the cape around his shoulders and sent dark hair rippling down his back in black waves. Aurostibite lifted his head and pushed the brim of his hat up a little, eyes narrowed as he felt a flicker of a power signature nearby.

Order, he thought, gaze narrowing, and glanced around, seeking out the source.

Where are you?

Patrolling at all understood the possibility of finding an enemy, since that was the very purpose of it. Find youma or agents and prevent them from doing harm to the population and environment. It wasn’t every night that something was felt, but he engaged when he did. It sent phantom aches along his scars, feeling the tinge of chaos now at the periphery of his mind. Thraen pivoted on the gravel of a roof to intercept. Better that there not be time allowed to draw a sigh and dread what this encounter would bode.

Are they moving. Is there a youma. Other signatures immediately nearby to act as reinforcements. All negatives immediately, but changeable. A civilian could hide at a vantage, undetectable, and then power up to become reinforcements as part of a trap. How into the well of madness will this one have dipped.

A silhouette emerged against the city backdrop. A cape, a hat, a General. This will go badly.

The same as each other time, with broken bones, need of stitches, and nothing much more to show for it. At least this one wasn’t already murdering someone. He called on approach, “A fail night for an ill aura, General.”

Landed on a near ledge corner with the scrap of stone on stone.

The signature was drawing nearer, enough so that Aurostibite could feel the strength of it now; perhaps as strong as his own, not a young, uninformed senshi, but an experienced one. He did not run after it; in fact, it was coming towards him, he thought, since it was getting more apparent with each second that passed.

A voice rang out, low and unfamiliar. Footsteps followed, stones scraping, and Aurostibite turned, the wind ghosting across his face, a chill breeze that seemed to settle deep into his bones.

He had not summoned his weapons; not yet, not until he deemed it necessary. Some of his recruits, and some of his colleagues might have attacked first, shown brutal force and then come in later with questions once they had gotten in a few blows, but Aurostibite was not one of them. He wanted information. Violence could come secondary to that.

"Perhaps," he said now, taking a few slow strides nearer, gloved hands tucked together behind him. Behellagh, ever the faithful youma, was somewhere deep within the Rift where he'd sent her; perhaps he would call for her later, if he thought there would be a problem.

"What brings you out tonight, senshi? You are not one that I know."

"The fettering of the will of Metallia, " Nor was this General one that Thraen recognized. Communication between senshi was notoriously lackluster, though, compared to the experiences with officers. The question at hand was whether it was a truth or a lie seeking information that this one knew neither name nor magic.

"What is your reason for wearing her livery and power?" No immediately obvious weapon to bear, but the hands were not visible behind him. The man closed some of the distance. This was fine, preferable even. He might bear something meant for close melee.

Aurostibite's gaze narrowed ever so slightly.

"Metallia's will is carried out through my own desires and beliefs," he said, unlacing his fingers and letting his hands fall to his sides. The blades were still not summoned, though his fingers itched to grasp the handles, feel the familiar weight of the weapons against his palms. "I prefer to live in a world that suits the needs of the many, rather than the few."

He made a gesture towards the senshi.

"And what of you? What reason do you carry for that garb?"

"Your definitions sacrifice the Many to the Few, the One, indeed feeding the starseeds and energies of the one living planet and all its inhabitants to the gorge of the thing called Metallia. It's will, inhuman, to feed and enslave all to itself. For what else have they done, workers of her will, but take energy-stealing, take lives and souls to ending corpses, and create in others, breaking from rebirth by making Youma of them. When has Metallia created something, instead of twisted it? Grown something for renewal and succor instead of for war and destruction? You stand by a tyrant."

"So wear I my garb- and make of this Magic and Starseed in my breast what I can. To safeguard and uphold the rights and lives of those who cannot protect themselves and have no magic of their own. To learn of Truth beyond the veil of Glamour. " Hands visible were better, but little comfort, to the eternal. Empty hands were still dangerous, and could still reach into a chest. They could all do it, even the lieutenants.

"Your own desire. You desire and believe in the justness of the actions of the Negaverse, for the glut of this creature, Metallia?"

"Yes," said Aurostibite, because it was perfectly true. He would keep himself and those he cared about safe, and if it was necessary to make larger sacrifices to protect them and to expand the good of the world, then he would do that as well. "You certainly like to speak with a silver tongue, senshi. We do not wish for 'enslavement,' that is a myth perpetuated by ignorance. We care for the betterment of Earth and its people, nothing more, nothing less."

He let his gaze sweep across the man's uniform, the twirling branches, the twisting vines, the flowers that sprouted and curved across the edges. An older senshi, a powerful one, judging by his aura; Aurostibite wondered what he had seen, what he had done, what he wanted.

"I believe she is correct in her desire to rid the Earth of unnecessary additions, yes," said Aurostibite. "The Order only believe themselves to be doing the right thing, though I have yet to see any evidence otherwise. Why pledge yourself to such a disorganized set of people? I have seen the White Moon. I have seen their inability to work together."

Aurostibite let out a small, derisive snort. "They are argumentative. They will self destruct long before we have rid ourselves of them."

"Betterment is not murder. Nor to make youma of people, the destruction of starseeds and destinies like chattel. The Earth has Knights of it's own, who steward the magic of it's Wonder Ley-points that Metallia fouls, covets, corrupts. What does Metallia offer that the Earth Knights don't already provide, save she drains energy and lives where they tend it and let it grow? Silver is no colour of my words, but tar black when speaking of that creature and her mana thrumming your veins like a drug. Clouding wills from free thought. "

"I pledge myself to no White Moon, no kingdom with an empty throne. I want no dominion over others, nor council it. The difficulty of navigating many opinions of children has little bearing on making a choice of morals and ethics. Because others make it hard, you shrink from doing what is right? From calling crimes wrong? An even more difficult view on the soil of a federal republic."

" 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are: ' "

" Life."
" Liberty."
" And the pursuit of Happiness.' Every starseed pulled from a chest violates that, General. "

" 'Murder' is a loose word, coming from your kind," said Aurostibite, with a derisive sound fro the back of his throat. "You people slaughter and attack and kill each other without ever needing our assistance; and you do it all to yourselves. I do not need to kill to get what I want."

The senshi's words were absolute, strong, lacking utterly in hesitation; it was almost surprising, considering all of the weak-willed senshi running amok. A part of him wanted to know what the man would be like if he was on the other side, the right side, with that sort of vibrant, black and white thinking.

"I'm not sure where you get off telling me that what we do is a violation of the simplest rights and desires of mankind," said Aurostibite, eyes narrowing, a flicker of annoyance touching his voice. "You, who treat those among your ranks with pride and contempt, who try and take the moral high ground when in reality you are no better than the worst sort. Was it not your kind that kidnapped and tortured several of us just last year? Was it not your fellow people who seemed to think that locking us up in cages was an answer to your problems?"

He still remembered Mintaka's desperate face, her hollowed eyes. Aurostibite's tone was sharp, as frigid as the air.

"You stand there, throwing moral superiority at me, spewing nonsense, when you have torture and kidnapping as part of your retinue? Don't make me laugh, senshi."

"Laugh then, and take naught serious, not even your own motivations and compass. This is no laughing matter, that plays the worth of lives against the eternal core of sentient beings in an established cycle of rebirth." Thraen's eyes narrowed, flickering fires bright in the dark.

"Fallacy ad Hominem, fallacy of composition- among a host of others. Your debate form is wanting, and answers no point except with emptiness. Will you move onus probandi, next? Let us keep to what can be proved. Metallia demands quota of energy and starseeds from every agent in her army. Civilians are hors de combat. " The words came hissed. "Murder is the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. Yet civilians are harvested and slaughtered for energy and starseed by command of the Negaverse. "

"You and I, General. You and I are soldiers each given magic in this war. We are the combatants. We are casus belli, and as combatants may lawfully kill enemy combatants. While neither of our factions has the recognition of the sovereign nations of the planet earth, in matters of sovereignty we can point to 'Dina d'malkhuta dina'- "the law of the land is the law." The laws of war recognized by Earth's coalitions and terms of engagement. Some of the senshi may be war criminals, indeed, as you say. They are individual actors. They would be tried each as a sociopath or serial killer, a single entity in breach of Geneva Conventions for torture and inhuman treatment. As I cannot deny some senshi have done this, so you cannot that the Negaverse has as well, and scarred it's share of senshi and knights through torture. Or through stealing half their person away, unwilling, to their very soul. But the Negaverse is a standing army beneath an inhuman intelligence, and stands for murder, slaughter, and thievery by virtue of it's standing orders. There is an ethical difference of wrongs, tried by a handful of individuals to the systematic, continual and repetitious orders of a organized body "

"Will you actually think on this, and offer back better? Will you bark laughter and take up your weapon for savagery? Come, General, let us not waste each other's time."

It was astounding, really, how one could be so staunchly resolute in the idea that their side was the right when all around evidence pointed to the contrary. Aurostibite could scarcely believe his ears, and already he was shaking his head, dark hair rippling behind him.

"Our lives are not worth less than yours, though you seemed to think so when you threw us into those cages," Aurostibite hissed, just as ferociously as the other had spoken, through gritted teeth and fingers that curled against his palms, digging in so that his knuckles were white beneath the gloves. "We do not needlessly slaughter, as your kind has. We take what we need and we do what we must in order to prevent the destruction of all of Earth, and yet you stand there and you preach to me of your beliefs when you know nothing of ours."

It had been a long time since he had been so worked up, the adrenaline of everything rushing through Aurostibite's veins. He let out a humorless sound that was almost a laugh, except not quite; there was nothing but anger and resolution in his eyes. A breath was taken, more to calm himself than anything else; he was not the sort to go into things when his mind was not settled, after all.

And he could not deny, even if he wanted to, that Thraen was right, in one respect: there were members who went too far on both sides, people who could not seem to handle the responsibility or the power and so went off on their own, thinking themselves smarter, or perhaps it was simple arrogance and selfishness. Whatever the case - Aurostibite could not have said this was not the case, though it ate away at him that he could not say it wasn't true.

"You are right, senshi," he said Aurostibite, after a moment. "We are soldiers in this war. I suppose that you are...not wrong, in thinking that there are those who are individual actors who do of their own accord. But the same as how you regard yourself separate from them, you cannot simply lump the rest of us all together. You cannot give yourselves an exit for your own wrongdoings and then leave us none when there are cases of wrongness on both sides."

He disliked thinking in such a way; it felt almost a breach of contract, somehow.

"I do not simply attack for attacking's sake," said Aurostibite, his gaze narrowed. "I do not offer violence or, as you say, murder or slaughter simply because you think your mind more intelligent than mine. No, senshi, you think yourself on the right side, but you should take a good look at yourself and your side of the war before you ever throw what we've done back at me."

Flamed interest cooled at the first words exited from the General's hole. He replies to none of it. 'you know nothing of ours' all over again, as others, throwing out 'you don't know me!' as though this were justification for any action. A smokescreen for every ignorance and occasion. This one wants no more to think about actual reason than the others. I was mistaken. He returns and fixates repeatedly on the same arguments even as they are named fallacies and hears nothing else. Doesn't debate, doesn't offer....anything at all. 'you think your mind more intelligent than mine'....

a**. Thoughtless a**. Not until so much said, and so little in every turn, did I think lowly of capability. Is it that I used specific terms that he comes to such a conclusion? Surely! Surely! It must be the case that someone only uses advanced vocabulary, beyond the common 3000, when they are trying to prove superiority. Never, ever, ever, as a sign of respect and acceptance that another is equal and knows the same precision. It is only an insult, only ego, and I'm treating him as less-than-human by talking to him like a human.


"My actual thought or opinion are no part of your purview. You repeat yourself without Reason. No more there be to speak upon, then. Surrender any starseeds on yourself, and declare their origins if by your hand or another, or surrender to a search. Or draw your weapon, as sorrow and pain must dwell between us. "

Thraen was difficult to read. Aurostibite had a strong desire to do what the others did when it came to stubborn Order members and simply run at him and sink his blades into the sliver of skin he could see through the twisting vines and flowers that made up the better part of his uniform.

Aurostibite shook his head, making a sound that was something like a derisive snort.

"How generous of you to give me a chance to surrender to you," he said. "And you speak of arrogance on our side."

There was a gleam of metal as the blades appeared on both sides of Aurostibite, scalloped edges silver in the moonlight, gloved fingers wrapping around the handles of them. He lifted his chin, eyes narrowed slightly, wondering why it was always so damned impossible to speak to them.

How galling these people are.

When?
Again for when, except for the final asking, that the General stop generalizing or repeating himself and ‘actually think on this’, there were no speakings nor intimations anywhere in sifting the words that had passed. The General made up entire conversations, apparently, in his own head. Or inserted derision instead of interest for emotional backing onto a presented evenness of tone. Conflated statements about Metallia alone to adhere to himself? The question comes to be if the trouble is in him, to naturally project his own habit onto others, or in the chaos twisting him.

At least he summoned his weapons, if making no other moves. A warrior of arms as apt to his ‘debate’: empty. They’d already assured they were melee distance, and the General’s willingness to have closed so much was plain with the revelation of his steel. He holds them like a pair of tonfa. Fast as fists, and damage attacking or guarding. But close range, as weapons.

Thraen made a lunge with leading leg, aiming boot to the dark instep of the General’s foot while pulling his own arms up ready.

He could have continued the conversation, but Aurostibite had long since passed the desire to try and talk with a member of Order. If this senshi was not willing to compromise or to even look past his own side's misgivings and mistakes, then there was little to be done about that than this.

A leg swung out, catching his foot, and Aurostibite shifted, body twisting to try and avoid being knocked completely over at the move. Pain ricocheted up his leg - those boots looked to be made of some sort of hard material, after all - and Aurostibite staggered, swinging one of his blades towards Thraen's upper arm.

Focus. Focus.

Don't get reckless.
