The sun had set by the time General Labyrinthite had reached his destination, the slight orangey-purple hue lingering in the sky as night properly blanketed the city. Gravel crunched beneath his boots as he walked along the surface streets of the abandoned district. Most of the buildings have begun to crumble due to lack of care and faulty architecture. Labyrinthite's preferred building was one that time had not been kind to.

The glass windows of the storefront had been shattered, leaving shards of glass every which way and that, some even hidden beneath crumbling stone and rotting wood. Over half the building had caved inward, the ceiling collapsed years ago and destroying the industrial ovens in it's wake. Parts of a counter remained, where an nonfunctional cash register sat, drawer missing and buttons broken off. The staircase to the roof remained intact, surprisingly, and while he could have easily jumped the height of the building, the general preferred to pick his way through the building and climb the stairs.

Eyes reminiscent of whiskey swept across the room as he moved, cloak fluttering behind him and hood drawn up so half his face was obscured. The man studied the room as if he was looking for anything amiss, finding nothing he moved upwards. Despite the caving of over half the roof, the parts that remained were still sturdy, enough that he strode across them with confidence.

There was a sharp intake of breath, eyes fluttering closed as he soaked in the quiet serenity of the night and his chosen battlefield. His heels rested against a ledge, head tipped back enough that the pink in his fauxhawk was visible beneath the moonlight. Here it was that he'd called for any challenger to find him, here it was where he'd made a stand, and here would be the place where he laid many to rest.

And so, Labyrinthite waited, body tense and prepared for whatever blips may come, hoping that tonight would be a night where someone of worth found him.

The mention in the paper was unmistakable as something out of the average. Something gleaned by the public that was so abnormal that it had to pertain to the shadows and magical goings on. The abnormal of Destiny City almost always did. Some time on Instagram, looking over urban exploration blogs, and looking at general photography around the city served for pointing out some starting points of places to look for a match in the city.

Thraen had already been to many of the worst neighborhoods in searching with Ash and Faust for Amphitrite. And again in the few searches he'd made on foot for missing Ida on Liryn's behalf. It had taken some days, but circulating through those equally eliminated locations until he was at his final three to check. Plain a trap, with time to prepare. Plain an advantage to the other side, choosing a grown they know. So. What is found then, in such a place? As though we needed to give them more advantages than they already have with teleportation and weapons that do not run out of uses. With youma at their beck and call. With no willingness needed to destroy a soul.

There. A feel. A General.
His jaw set, and the eternal senshi paused on a roof, looking at the distance of maybe three other rooves between himself and the feel of the signal. Looking for some confirming silhouette in black against the light-polluted amber and reds of city-evening skies. It would be something like that.

He made a cursory loop, checking on the night time population. It was not a bustling place. There could be people hiding, unpowered up, but a quick check revealed nothing, and no auxiliary signatures. Satisfied, he closed to the roof central to the negaverse feel. "Blood rotting on walls is set to poor purpose."

Conventional was not something that was often applied to the general with the stark-pink fauxhawk. His methods were unrestrained and while a message written in blood had not been his brightest idea it had done what he'd wanted, for now. However, unlike what many suspected, there was no traps laid in waiting - just a man in a cloak pulled far enough to obscure his face with shadows. There was always the threat of something lying in wait, the ability to call youma to arms or to even other agents.

But Thraen would find, in the end, that Labyrinthite preferred to deal with matters personally and with his own hands. If he could not handle a single senshi on his own, what a pathetic general he would be.

The eternal senshi's power signature felt like a spoonful of sugar weighted on his tongue. Too sweet, too bright, and like it was something meant to burn sweetly. He thought of circling the surrounding area but instead opted to remain where he was, it would be easier to locate him he thought. And he proved to be correct when the voice wafted across the night air.

Labyrinthite stepped back, boots touching solid unteetering ground and he turned, sharp grin worn on his mouth. "Ah, but it served my purpose none the less," he remarked confidently, assured that his choice had been a useful one. After all, people responded. "It brought you here, did it not?"

“An aura alone serves that purpose. “ There was a very bare familiarity to the man, and hind-thought raced round in with a small cart of associations for the internal Meadowlands Pace. Uniform, colors, voice, the set of throat and mouth and shoulders to silhouette to cadence beaten out by tongue. I’ve seen this one before. But where. Need not be a General, then. As with Alois the many times, hither and thither.

“Whether of attraction or avoidance. “ Brought ‘me,’ but more likely any senshi at all. A kind of me. The group. So what do you want with any senshi that the newspaper brings? “You want more than presence. “

He kept his back to open space, to where no building lay, and his feet to the outskirt of the roof. If he teleports, there’s no landing to be had. Can they teleport so fast in succession, in and out in mid air? Possibly so. It would cost energy. How to read the riddle of this one tactically...does he carry and use starseeds as readily as Zircon. Zircon…

The name hitched a ribbon the the cart of thoughts as surely as Alois’ call sign, Bischofite, did. One and One and One. It was a partial clue, when the three had been together that he’d seen them. Had seen and known this officer by name if not much else- unknown officers. That feature rings as true...

"I disagree. An aura is too broad. Providing an exact location removes the possibility of chasing down the source for longer than necessary," Labyrinthite argued with his hands pushing his coat and cloak back so he could slide them into the pockets of his pants. "The stronger the aura, the more it attracts but then - " he cocked his head but made no move closer to the senshi who clearly knew how to keep his options open. "It makes it more difficult to pinpoint."

He liked the broadness of it all but disliked it at the same time.

He didn't always want to give chase after all.

Eyes the color of the whiskey parents kept in locked cupboards took in the sight of the senshi, familiarity prickling on the edges of his senses. Had he seen him before? Or did he simply recognize him from description alone? Labyrinthite was unsure.

"You're not wrong," he agreed, shoulders rolling back in a shrug and a hand gesturing in the air before returning to it's comfortable pocketed seat. "Perhaps I am made of blood lust, or curiosity. It's hard to say. What are you looking for senshi?"

Lives spent like cheap currency, seven and a half billion penny dreadfuls, and this one piled more filth into his scrip with every word. Not a general, but a king of ‘lonely boy's aesthetic:’ one-sided laments entreating others to validate his furies and wrongs by being wronged. ‘Blood lust’ sewn to curiosity with a shrug. “Answers.”

“You killed those in the photo? You harvest starseeds? ”

As much a waste of time as so many others. This one will not repent of it. No more than Zircon. Or the recognition of the large one Aegir liked so well. Even with his remorse, he showed no likelihood of change. I wonder if they're even able to, come some threshold of Chaos. It would require some care for the difference of right and wrong, at the least. Zircon.
WP.
The Guy Fawkes mask. 'My name is Captain Labyrinthite. My weapon is a scythe...' Now a general as much as Bischofite or Wolframite were in their times. So long ago. At least two years. Maybe more. So we've each grown in the time, a General and an Eternal Senshi, and nothing more.

"Carry them on you as is protocol?"

"If you want answers, you'll have to provide me with a name."

The nagging feeling of familiarity was too persistent for the general to continue to ignore. He could see the senshi analyzing him and he was curious as to what conclusions the man was coming to. In turn, Labyrinthite made mental notes; blond, scar across the face, vegetation aplenty, etc. He had already come to a conclusion about whom he was face with and something akin to fury burned brightly in his belly.

But he did not act, instead observed. Talked.

"Of course I did. I don't rely on others to do my dirty work." Not when Labyrinthite was sending a personal message. "Keep in mind, they sought me." He didn't elaborate further, in part because he didn't think the senshi would care and in part because he didn't see reason to explain himself. "They're long lost if you held hope of salvaging them, returning them to the cauldron." Lost somewhere in the rift, likely crushed beneath youma teeth.

"I do not rely on the aid of them as some do."

A name— his ties with Xenotime, Bischofite, Zircon, Captain Ashanite and-or General Umber are not close knit, then. Did they make reports to the greater whole, any of them? Perhaps not. Only within each other? Where are the divides of the cells, the loyalties to Generals instead of the Kings and Queens...damn. And years between to mask us from knowing each other on first sight. Some safe anonymity there. I wonder how many senshi any officer meets in a month. How many we are in total that each becomes just another rat gnawing at the grain silos of the Negaverse harvest. What does he hope to gain in my name? "Did theirs matter, Labyrinthite?"

Their names. Their souls.

Pride and derision in General's declarations answered already. Answered many things. "You will not turn away from domination and false splendor? From murder to conservation?"

The general scowled at Thraen as his name left his mouth. Of course the senshi knew his name and he wondered if it was because of actual recognition or if his description and name carried more weight than he thought. That idea pleased his ego while the rest of him seemed to bristle.

"If you're asking if I remember their names yes. Those that proclaimed them anyway." He remembered all of them and the stupid name they called their pathetic team. Except for the ones who died without giving their name.

At least Labyrinthite had been kind enough to leave their souls all in one place, even if they were shattered.

"Do not pretend to think that you know the first thing about me senshi." The words were more strained than he meant them. This was how Marmoreal had acted before he struck. "If you're going to continue to refuse to provide a name and further waste my time, I suggest you leave before my patience runs dry."

Victimize the self, attempt to assert some missing depth of character that an enemy couldn't possibly fathom, and supposedly end all argument validity in the face of the wall that it could only be based on interpersonal judgements.

"Individual minutiae enhances, but does not change the facts of the Negaverse's goals and actions, or the results. Or that you have served it long, now a General. I have no need of pretension."

"My name is Thraen. We've met."
"Will you turn away from ruin?"

Labyrinthite respected the other generals well enough, if he knew of them, but made no attempts to form close knit bonds with any but those that he'd brought into the Negaverse. If they were not one of his, then he cared little for them outside of what was expected or had been impressed upon him by the leaders he still respected, regardless if their presence was lacking. The relationships among the soldiers varied and for too long, the man had spent a lone wolf caught up in an obsession that led to ruins.

Now he stood, a leader among those that accepted him, a little more cracked but a little more whole than when he'd stood alone and yet -

Here he was, standing alone against a senshi who sought to understand not the motives of the Negaverse, but perhaps his own.

"No," he agreed, seeming thoughtful as he considered the assessment. "The goals of Metallia are my own," he said, though did not divulge what he considered those to be. "I wear red and blood and lives on my skin, but so do you." The edges of his mouth curled into something maniac, unrestrained, when the name was given.

"Have we?" If he tried, he would remember, but he made no effort. "Thraen is it?" He remembered the name, Zircon had given it to him as the name of her torturer and others had mentioned him. "You injured my sparrow." Labyrinthite took a step forward, head cocked with interest. "What ruin is there to turn from that won't return?"

Who wastes time and patience now. Fetishizing violence and given over to it, apparently. Which the Sparrow. I have injured a share of agents with broken limbs and punctures.

"Ruin's Inevitability—do you know how many stars there are in our Galaxy? Just stars. "

Thraen's expression did not shift as the General's did. Mentions of blood, or the man's closing space, were noted like motes of dust reflecting in a window's crepuscular rays. "At the least 100 billion. Just stars, just in the Milky Way Galaxy. If you count from one to one billion, not even 100 billion, you will be counting for 95 years. "

"There are at least one hundred billion galaxies in our observable universe. One hundred billion galaxy cauldrons, potential royal crystals, potential worlds for further solar systems with planets and peoples and things like Scouts and Knights. One hundred billion multiplied by itself in stars alone, each with a magic and a soul and a name. Metallia and her furtive eating, her Ruin, on a single rock at the fan edge of a single galaxy cannot suffice to exert Dominion in five years? Six? Faced with a handful of leaves of this hundred of a hundred of billions. Ruin as inevitable, as unrecoverable, is a thin reason. This universe is renewing, by means outside of science, even to pinpoint souls in reincarnation every second. "

"You enjoy blood and killing for the sport of Ruin? "

Fingers twitched at the general's side, gloved fingers drumming against a thigh as he maintained his grin while Thraen spoke of the endless stars and galaxies that populated their universe.

"Who's to say that there are not forces like Metallia's, or that are not hers, in those endless galaxies you theorize about. Or, if they exist, that they are not in the state that of the places that senshi or knights find calling to them. A mix of time-worn destruction and ruin brought about by something else." He'd only seen one wonder and heard stories of planets and stars and whatever else the senshi belonged to.

"What are we, if not pawns of the universe who seeks to uphold some sort of skewed balance? You can't tell me that the 'other side' is any more infallible than the one I am on." Even if the senshi could, it would not change his views or where his loyalties lied.

"If you're asking about remorse, no. Adrenaline that comes with combat, yes. Death and bloodshed are just side-effects."

"There might be. But statistics don't bear you out. The mirror bows not to thee and thine, nor Finsternis Queen, then there are the long-reigns well and hale of the Prince and Princesses and the far barrier of the Surrounding. Not one of the Royals has been conquered, unlike the revolving door of the General-Kings and General-Queens. Five years at least have trodden by and Metallia has not conquered this single city. Shall this be like Candia? 21 years of siege, if that is the case. "

"Metallia stands for her own Dominion alone. And robs others of their Choice. She makes nothing, only gluts and twists and maims. She isn't true Chaos, which is Chance and Change, and fair enough for its own sake. Metallia is banality, benefiting only itself. You will all be eaten just the same in the end. Starseeds broken between teeth and used; youma turned to ash. "

"Is it then the right to die last that you cherish, having brought all else to naught? Rather than to stand for choices of living, and lives many colored, dying eventually in body only to some other rebirth in some other far time and place anew in cycles?"

"Adrenaline and such highs can come at the price of drugs alone, with no death or bloodshed but your own required. Bitcoin and the DarkNets can see to those needs. Why involve others if your motivation is that simple. "

There was no question that his expression darkened at the mention of the mirrorwalkers, grin slipping just a tich though he remained relatively at ease and confident seeming. He didn't flinch or disagree with anything that Thraen provided, chewing over the information quietly as he decided what he felt like disclosing. For how strong a grip the Negaverse had on the rest of the world, it was laughable how poorly they were doing here in Destiny City.

As far as the general was concerned, it was because power had not been placed in the most capable of hands. Though the newest additions to the cluster in the city had yet to tested, perhaps they would surprise him.

"Death, power, destruction, chaos is all consuming," he chose to say rather than refute anything. As far as the general was concerned, there would be no surviving the war and thus he sought to tear as much down with him when his time ran up. "Drugs are hardly...fun," he sneered, fingers flexing and the bone staff of his scythe began to materialize in his hand.

The blade was heavy, but Labyrinthite seemed to lift it with relative ease, even one handed.
