It Takes Two"Two, actually." His voice carried easily in the ocean breeze, putting his hair up so it wouldn't be tousled in his face as he approached her familiar form. "Two boyfriends. One almost died from Blackfriars attack, the other isn't talking to me because I tried to do grievous harm to his best friend while I was shifted." He lifted one brow, a faint smile forming. "I don't like to leave the injured one's side, so you have an hour before I have to feed his cat and get back to him. Meds wearing off and all." Lucas sat down next to Sunny, pulling out a bag from the inside of his jacket pocket, spilling out the contents: Red Vines, M&M's, Cool Ranch Doritos, Sour Cream Sunships, Snickers and Lifesavers. "Just to start you off. Hate me later."

It Takes Two"Two boyfriends," Sunny said, eyes widening. "Most people only get one." Lucas might be the boyfriend whisperer, is what she was saying. She flopped back down onto the sand, eyeballing Lucas's offering: some of them were things she'd heard of. Some weren't. "You're not you when you're hungry," she quoted, choosing a snickers from the pile. She folded her arms over her knees as she chewed, expression taut like she expects to be tested on the flavor and texture of a snickers later. "Food is so good," she groaned, "I am gonna DIE. That's how good." She chewed in silence for a few long moments. "So why did you try to ******** up your boyfriend's friend? If you wanna talk about it."

It Takes Two"Most people only have room in their heart for one." Lucas shrugged. "We have two heartbeats. I have two men that make me very happy." He leaned back on his hands, feeling the sand sift against his skin and somewhat through his prosthetic hand. "It's not a big deal." Pale eyes turned to her. "I apparently get to be a territorial shithead when the moon is rising, and...said best friend answered my man's door." His lips pursed. "Naked." He looked out over the water again. "On almost five days with no sleep and stress I can't put a name to, I went at him." A slight shrug was offered, though it was weaker. The situation was still raw. "Didn't know who he was, so I lost my s**t." Lucas smiled, but it was thin. "Food is one of our better points of enjoyment. Emotions...can be a bitter pill to swallow, sometimes. I hope you don't gotta deal with that."

It Takes TwoSunny tipped her head from side to side, thinking about it. Then she shrugged and tipped over to put her head on Lucas's fleshier shoulder. Her hair had been washed since they'd last seen each other, and smelled not unpleasantly of burnt herbs and seawater. "I know emotions," she said, "the good ones and the bad ones and the ones in between." Not really the lustier ones. Sunny couldn't really imagine having room in her heart for anyone. She'd used to love people, but after a while it stopped being worthwhile. Now it was… duty. "What's it like? Being in love?"

It Takes TwoShe was Pack to him, and it was easy for him to rest his stubbled cheek against her hair, his hand lifting from the sand to lightly rub her back. "I'm sorry. That's a long time to feel...everything." Lucas exhaled slowly at the question and gazed quietly out over the water. He could have played dumb, but he wasn't going to treat Sunny like that. She knew. Even if she didn't...lying to someone whose power hurt like his soul being ripped in half seemed like a bad idea. "Scary. Exhilarating. Consuming." He whuffled softly. "Barely a minute goes by that I'm not thinking of them. That can be nice, in domestic settings, but when you're fighting for your life, it's...terrifying that your priorities in survival have shifted to their comforts." His shoulders slumped a little. "Being in love is finding that thing in life that has purpose, but it comes with the knowledge it can all go away in the blink of an eye. It kind of sucks." A faint bit of laughter escaped him. "But I wouldn't trade it."

It Takes Two"Oh," said Sunny, and she reflected on that for a quiet moment: was there a point to her wanting things like that? She couldn't have it. She could have this, something she'd done on accident while trying for something else entirely. She could try… In the end, the clock kept ticking, and Sunny stayed the way she was: forever seventeen, forever the witch of the waves, the Dark Lady. She said, "Good," in a way that closed the subject. "Do you want to see some magic," she asked. "Cool stuff. Nothin' dangerous."

It Takes TwoLucas glanced over, though he couldn't see her, tucked against him as she was. He had half a mind to profess his distrust in magic, but he could still feel the tightness of the scar on his palm. There was little way he could be in denial of it when he'd literally sought it out. "Sure," he replied placidly. "How'd you learn it?" A pause. "What does it mean to you? Magic, I mean."

It Takes TwoSunny rolled her eyes, though her back was to Jeremiah so like that wasn't very obvious. "Dunno," she said, spinning in place (her hair, glossy and clean, spun out around her like an obsidian halo). "What does air mean to you? Or water? Or, or… your boyfriends?" She reached out and made a complex little wrench of a gesture, and eight fairy lights sprung into being in a little orbit around her hand. Opening her hand--the movement delicate and lithe, the curl of her fingers speaking to a ballerina more than a witch--she watched them spin. "You know what they call me on the other side? The otherworld's daughter. They think I was born from all the magic in the world. It'd make sense, too, if I was. Because I can do anything I want." Sunny tensed her hand, spread her fingers out as wide as they could go, and the little stars stopped moving. She crouched back down in front of Lucas. "There is nothing to fear from this little magic, though. Take one."

It Takes Two"They're things I understand, things that are normal in anyone's life -- but magic? Not so much." Lucas lifted a brow. "It may be normal for you - " The orbs flared to life and the man fell silent. He'd only heard of actual magic being used - from Autumn, from Thorne - and outside of his body shifting, he hadn't actually seen anything. But there it was. Floating serenely in front of his nose. Lucas visibly hesitated, looking at her face in the circle of stars. Extending both hands, he cupped both flesh and metal fingers around one, eyes wide. "What magic should I fear?" he asked cautiously.

It Takes Two"But what do they mean to you," asked Sunny. "'Cause I'm willing to bet it's something like magic is meaning to me." She shrugged. "Magic has many purposes. Like a knife, you can cut meat, carve wood, start a fire… you can stab a man and cut out his heart." Sunny fell back onto her butt from her crouch and crossed her legs beneath her. "It's all a matter of perspective. Like knives."

It Takes Two"Air and water are both sort of staples of life. My boyfriends mean a lot of emotions, a future I hadn't planned on." Lucas looked at her wearily, feeling like his attempts to understand magic were constantly thwarted by this line of thinking. "I just don't understand. Lady said magic was formed by a guy too afraid to die. How has it become this?" He exhaled slowly through his nose, shoulders slumping, looking at the light pooled in his palms. "And what's your perspective on it?" Something else occurred to him, looking over to Sunny again. "If you can go anywhere and do anything...why are you here and so bored you need the company of a human-ish person?"

It Takes TwoSunny frowned. "I don't know where magic came from," she said. "I know I need it. It's… it's my heart. It's my blood. And it's not as bad as you think." She sighed at the mention of Lady. "I really… Do you trust me when I say that I don't know where magic came from? I don't know what it is, only that it is. Do you understand where air came from? Or why this particular planet in this particular galaxy in this particular cycle is the one that you live on? They're all questions in the same vein." His last question stumped her, though. Sunny shifted uncomfortably. "I could leave," she said, quietly. "But what if I do? What if I leave, and you all fail again, but instead of sealing it away again you lose? If the Enemy wins, then there's no magic. If the Enemy wins, then I…" She closed her hand, and the lights all went out. "Die. "There's no place for me in his world."

It Takes TwoAnother sighing exhale escaped him, covering the light by pressing his thumbs together. "I'm not the type of guy to accept things easily, but I believe you. Even if I didn't, it's your choice what you want to say. I'm just here to keep you company." Lucas tried to smile, thin and worn. It didn't last. "I don't mean -- leave leave, just -- you don't have to stay here, on the beach, do you?" He swallowed with some difficulty, trying to wrap his head around the fact that the very thing he was against was manifest as a life at his side. "If we had someone to explain things, not send us on these half-thought missions, maybe we could actually get our s**t together. Maybe we could actually win, for once." It was a long shot, and the tone of his voice suggested he didn't like the prospects of 'maybe' as a means to rely on. "You're not alone, you know that, right? For better or for worse," he parted his fingers, the orb setting a shine against the scar on his palm, the mark that made them Pack, "you've got me."

It Takes Two"Where else would I go?" Sunny drew a circle in the sand and pressed her palm to it, then lifted her hand: the sand followed her fingers in wispy tendrils. "I don't go to school, I don't have a job... I don't have a life outside the beach." And why would she? For what reason? She let the sand fall and smiled up at Lucas. "I do have you," she said. She reached out to tap the light, and it was encased in black smoke for a moment before it settled into his palm again, a little glowing glass bottle hanging from a chain. "And you've got me, too. Let that be a light in dark places." Sunny giggled at her pun, and rested her forearms against her knees. "Get it? Light? Sunny? And it's an actual light, too..."

It Takes TwoLucas shrugged. "Come visit me? You've got human capabilities now, and that involves making a life outside the beach." He arched a mock-critical brow, even as his eyes traced her magic display with muted wonder and uneasiness. "You're teaching me about all this - your life force, magic. I can teach you some human things. Like, eating pizza. You've gotta give that a go." There was a small puff of pride in him at her smile and statement, though he couldn't say why. His eyes turned to the light, and then opened entirely too wide at the transformation. Yeah, it was magic, but it was still ******** wild. "That's -- that's handy," he replied, a little breathless, lifting his hands to look at the bottle. "Thanks, Gandalf. Jesus." Unfastening the chain, he tucked it beneath his hair and clasped it, tugging the collar of his shirt to let it rest against his skin. "I will bring pizza next time. As a thanks." He knew these things didn't usually come without a price, and this was no exception.
