As much as Connor would have been incredibly happy to stay at home and not attempt to find himself a second job now that he was finished with school for the summer, he knew he really didn't have much of a choice. It was either acquire another source of income, or give up his fancy apartment (though he was starting to think he might have to do that anyways, once his lease was up). So, unfortunately, the job hunt that day was on, and with a small stack of resumes, he had hit the streets, going by both recommendation from people he knew and from the help wanted signs he had seen around town on his own.

Eventually, his little excursion brought him to Darlene's, a bar he had frequented occasionally. Okay, probably more that just occasionally, which was part of why he wasn't entirely sure he should even bother applying, even if the sign that said "inquire within" continued to beckon and entice the longer he stared, all while a few Incredibly Vital Questions raced through his head, the not least important being did I ever behave like a complete jack a** any time I was drinking in this establishment and would anybody remember if I did?.

After a couple more moments pause, he finally gave his head a shake and stepped forward, opening the door to go inside, where he immediately approached the bar, a few pages of resume still hand.

The bar had all the allure of an old dive with a fresh coat of paint and cleaned windows. A sign that said The Pub swung above the door but neon in the window scrawled Darlene's. It had town kitsch, old photos, and a mixture of animal heads, biker memorabilia and Americana covering the wood paneled walls. The bar itself was against the right side, a small stage set to the back, and booths lined the outer wall to the left with windows looking on a side alley. The rest of the floor was tables spattered with diners of all ages but the smell of the food was delicious. TV's played a cross section of sports on low volume and a silent, but lit up jukebox wasn't far from the door.

Two large dogs perked at the new entrant, a great dane taking a whole booth to herself and a fat rottweiler who seemed to have a worn spot by the stage that kept him out of the way of the wait staff.

At the bar was Borr, a mountain of a man who looked a bit like if Santa was the head of a biker gang. He turned to the young man as he approached, a hand smoothing over his impressive stomach as he smiled in welcome, "Afternoon. What can I get you?"

"Probably a haircut..." It was cackled softly by an old man at the end of the bar. He and the man next to him seemed to be wizened clones of one another, either by nature or out of sheer time spent with one another, and the other joined his friend in laughter.

Borr either didn't hear it or was so used to them that he tuned it out. No reaction from him at all.

As much as it was not at all like the typical night club that Connor was more used to frequenting, he found that Darlene's had a certain inescapable charm about it nonetheless. He perhaps looked a little bit out of place, with long hair tied back neatly so as to keep it out of the way, while wearing a dark red dress shirt with sleeves rolled up to it's elbows, a waist coat and tie, nice jeans, and brown leather boots. And it wasn't even just about being dressed to impress, as this was already Connor's more established level of "casual".

And yet, despite it being so, he felt completely overdone-up for this locale.

As he approached the bar, he was still having a little look around, his eyes wandering and catching sight of both of the canines, their presence bringing a small smile to his lips. Connor loved dogs, and often thought about getting one for himself, even if just something small that would be more suitable for his apartment, as a big, slobbery thing would likely be too much.

Turning his attention fully to the bar and the rather large man that stood behind it, Connor looked up, and smiled. "Afternoon." He echoed, putting as much warmth into his tone as he could muster, and then blinking at the small interruption from the end of the bar where the two elderly gentlemen sat. A little bit put off by the comment, and fighting not to shoot a glare that direction as he told himself to just ignore them, there was a small hesitation before Connor continued, doing his best to tune out the hecklers.

"I actually saw the sign up in your window, and thought I would bring in my resume. Are you the manager...?"

"Manager!" The old men cackled and Borr's lips quirked wryly, more in response to them than the question.

"I'm the owner," The large man moved out from behind the bar and out to meet the newcomer. He offered a huge hand for a shake, "Borr Gunnarsen."

When Borr moved, the dogs seemed to finally pay attention and soon there were two politely wiggling beasts flanking either side of him and sniffing needily up at the new guy.

Why were they laughing at that. Just, why? But as before, all Connor could do was ignore them, though this time not without a sidelong glance and a partially raised eyebrow, before his attention shifted back towards the large man before him.

"Ah, even better, then." Connor smiled, again mustering up whatever charm and warmth he could manage, and provided his hand for a shaking, though he wondered if he was about to have his fingers crushed. "Connor Hill," he shot back, before his hand was released.

And suddenly, dogs. Large, wiggling, snuffling, dogs. For once, Connor's smile didn't have to be forced. "I take it these are yours?" He asked, while reaching down to let them each sniff at his hand before giving the Rottweiller a light pat on the head and a little light scratching behind its ears, his other hand still momentarily preoccupied with his small stack of resumes, which he leaned forward to set down on the bar so he could give the other canine some attention as well.

Borr took the opportunity to snatch up one of the resumes while the dogs occupied the young man.

"Sometimes I think I'm theirs more than the opposite.." It was always a good sign when someone liked dogs. Anyone who didn't like animals had something wrong with them. "This is Dummy.." The fat wriggling rottweiler, "And the princess is Knucklehead."

The seemed to wriggle more with their names shared but were also very well trained, no jumping or invasive crotch sniffing, just wanting to be petted.

"What sort of work are you looking for?"

The Resume was well worded, and listed his current employment as a security guard at the hospital, as well as a few other jobs he'd supposedly held before moving to Ashdown (all embellished, but nobody needed to know that), and his current college situation, and any other necessary information that all Resume's needed.

While Borr looked it over, Connor continued to pet the dogs, his smile splitting into a grin as they pushed against him and vied for more attention. He couldn't help but scoff a dry laugh at the names, and looked up from them both towards the large man. "Interesting choice." He smiled, "And they seem to like it." He noted, as they wriggled more in excitement.

With the Owner's question, Connor stopped and straightened, silent for just a split moment while he considered what he should say. "I was hoping for something out front, if you've got anything available. I don't think I'd do well in the kitchen. Bartender or server is more my speed." He admitted, giving a half shrug of his shoulder.

"I'll be honest though, I can't really afford to be picky. Starving College student, and all." He threw that in there, in hopes of appealing to Borr's soft side, if he had one.

Lucky for Connor, Borr wasn't the type to check references. In his opinion the resume was much too thorough for a bar job, and usually he didn't even get a resume. But it was good kids were taking work seriously and prepared for anything.

"Everyone's a starving college student," Borr laughed, "It's a college town. Or a starving artist. Or just starving on ome sort of spiritual quest of some kind-" That was the kind of town this was.

Normally Borr would send the dogs off but Connor seemed to really enjoy them so they were left to wriggle and sniff until they got bored.

"I can offer serving hours right off the bat. So far we don't have any male servers so I hope you don't mind being in the girl's club." Borr crossed his arms, "So far as bartending goes, It's me and one of the gals. I can offer you a couple happy hours- see how it goes? And then maybe some better times if it works out." Besides that Borr would probably be present in a supervisory capacity.
