Lawrence liked minipets duties, especially the ones which didn't involve cleaning up poop. Mercifully as a full hunter he got a lot less of the former and more freedom to carry out his own investigations. It was fine to use up resources in the labs so long as one intended to replace them, and he did. He'd gotten fairly decent at minipet catching after learning the skill in America's company a long time ago and had since gathered a bit of a reputation insofar as minipets duties went. You did not leave your personal minipets in the cages usually assigned to Lawrence's watch because they very rapidly would be replaced by other minipets of an identical species but different colour and temprament after the original had gone into the metaphorical fear grinder.

When Jordan arrived for his duty, Lawrence was already dressed in an apron, his hair tied back in a perfectly neat hair tie, with an Abyssal Spectralia pinned out on the table in front of him, holding a scalpel in his good hand which was neatly gloved he waved it at Jordan.

"Well hello partner. You here to play with the little creatures?"

Jordan usually liked minipet duty, but he liked the caretaking part of it, the feeding and cleaning and exercise duties, duties that were more likely to be left for trainees. He volunteered from time to time. But he was also occasionally assigned to assist with the other minipet duties, the ones that involved experimentation, either preparation or cleanup. He recognized that there was a need for these experiments, and that it was both easier and more ethical to perform them on minipets, but he didn't like it. He was grateful not to be carrying out the experiments himself.

Today he was performing maintenance and cleanup on the tank series inside one of the experimental areas, a job that put him up close and personal with the minipets that were under ongoing study and made him all the more glad that he'd gotten Tiny out of the lab some time ago. He put on an apron, picked up the bucket with his tools in it, and let himself into the lab.

He came to a stop when he saw who was there, his expression going carefully blank. "I'm here to maintain the tanks in this area," he replied coolly. "I see that you're already playing with them. I wasn't aware that Death division took much of an interest in the experiments, as opposed to the results." He glanced at Lawrence's coat, observing that the trim and decorations had been updated, and did not say congratulations, instead moving to start checking over the first of the row of tanks on the far counter.

Lawrence gave Jordan a very big, very smug smile as he announced why he was there. "Maintenance man eh?" he purred. "Well at least you won't be half bad to watch while I work, Harrison and that red haired brute really missed a little trick with you didn't they?" He pointedly looked the other man over.

"And not quite Death any longer." he said. "Life and investigating ways to save people and preserve the rather handsome faces on this old rock." He brandished the scalpel with ruthless precision and cut several very neat incisions, a set of strange organs which were nothing like anything found on earth spilled out and he seemed to look pleased.

"You know, there was one I was dissecting the other day and it was full of candy. Can you believe it? Actual little candies roughly shaped like the major organs. They even had a very small bile duct candy in a little yellow wrapper. It's rather fascinating, if frustrating at times."

"I would have thought you'd want to be watching your actual work." Jordan retrieved a carrier from inside a cabinet, then removed the top of the first tank. The inhabitant flinched away from his gloved hand, pressing itself into the corner of the tank, and it took him some effort to catch it and transfer it so that he could begin the process of cleaning and checking the tank itself. "I hear you get better results that way." He made no response to the mention of his exes, pointedly ignoring the comment.

"Oh, well then. Congratulations on your transfer," he said, without any real enthusiasm to the words, and scooped soiled nesting material out of the tank and into a trash bag. When Lawr mentioned candy innards, though, he glanced around, interested despite himself. "In wrappers?" Then he spotted the glistening organs in the incisions on the minipet currently being experimented upon, and turned back to his task, the corner of his mouth pulling down with something that might have been disgust.

"Yes. Candy. Ridiculous, it makes one wonder why one bothers." he said. "I chose this one specifically because I assumed it would at least have a good chance of having organs. It was rather miserable anyway, being what appears to be a fish. Interesting how it has an approximation of piscene anatomy. It is like a world put together by some mad god who had long abandoned really trying." He smirked. "Good thing that sort of thing isn't a side effect of having a weapon bonded, it would be horrendous and rather concerning to find a human with such contorted viscera."

Still, it seemed that Lawrence was at the very least having fun with what he was doing, pausing only to watch Jordan. "Oh my work is fine, its not going to go anywhere, you on the other hand... " he leaned the scalpel on the fish minipet's tail and smiled at the other man. "Not every day I get to see a Jordan in the wild. I have seen you in my dreams more often than in life."

PostPosted: Tue May 24, 2016 11:49 am

"Was it candy-related in any other way? It seems like there's usually some kind of weird logic to those things. They're the manifestations of ideas, after all." Jordan glanced again at the fishlike creature on the table. Some minipets reacted as though they felt pain. This one lay still, only its eye moving from time to time. Jordan hoped that that was a residual motion rather than an indication that it was still living.

His hands paused in the job of wiping the interior of the tank clean. Was Lawr implying that he recalled the dreams in which he played another role entirely? Was he aware that those dreams were not just the product of his own mind, and did he know that others shared them? He lived with Melvin and Rodney; it was possible that they'd mentioned it or that Melvin had even explained it. But did he know that Jordan also knew? Jordan resumed wiping the tank clean and checked the leads that led to the display. "You have?" he asked. He looked back at Lawr, meeting his eyes with a curious, cool expression, the inflection of his voice altering just slightly. "How is Rodney doing?"

"Yes." he said. "Admittedly I am not used to creatures I dissect or perform procedures on being internally themed. I would be slightly surprised if, for instance I was neutering a dog and found its ovaries replaced with tennis balls because dogs happen to like those." This seemed to amuse him enough to chuckle. "Though it would be a story to tell."

He set about removing the various strange organs and laying them out on the table, pinning them down to the board he'd placed beneath the fear creature. "It's like playing with practice aids almost." he said. "Given that they are all simply made of roiling and wild fear. It's like operating on a cloud, a cloud with kaleidoscopic inclinations."

His smile seemed to freeze up a little at the question about Rodney, a strange twist taking his own gut at the inflection. If he was a cat he'd have bristled all the way along his spine right down to his tail. "Here?" he said. "Or there?"

Flicking the scalpel over in a motion of sudden and unexpected violence he stabbed it into the minipet right through its heart. It dissipated into swirling fear, taking most of its body with it, leaving only the odd part of slower fading gore. "Here he is the same good person he has always been." he said with an edge of irritation and reached into the tank of scurrying creatures to pick out another. This time it was a very feisty Kindle which made a valiant attempt to bite him on the hand.

It was scruffed, slammed on the table, restrained and then in a strange show of affection, stroked like a pet as he looked back to Jordan. "He's doing better than your relationships."
PostPosted: Tue May 24, 2016 5:26 pm

"They're a very different kind of animal," Jordan agreed neutrally. "Internal logic dictated by whim instead of evolution, I suppose."

The tiny flinch and freeze at the question was satisfying, but the feeling was quickly covered by a twinge of guilt as Lawrence took his irritation out on the pinned-down minipet. The mini dissipated with the violence of the motion, and Jordan tried not to think too hard about what that implied about minipets and the use of their body parts.

"I don't know him very well," he said, still not specifying which version he meant, and, "I would imagine so, since I'm not currently in a relationship." The last part came out with slightly more of an edge than he'd intended. Dammit. Don't let him know if he gets to you. "Unless you mean friendships, in which case I'm fine, thanks."

"Not in a relationship? at all" Lawr crooned playfully. "Sounds like fun, the whole island ripe for the picking. I almost envy your position, I'm in a situation with oh so many strings involved at the moment. But my door is certainly always open for the right caller. After all there aren't many people on the island with class, but you, well you do have quite a bit."

He turned his attention back to the unfortunate minipet, acting with complete indifference as he investigated this one. The kindle itself was a floral one, riddled with vines, leaves and flowers and he was curious to see if the thematic insides were consistent across the board. When he cut into it, making it make quite a bit of racket, he found that it was true and inside the minipet was a large array of strange vines and plants just as fantastical as on the outside.

"You just seem inclined towards individuals with no appreciation or class." he said. "Do you ever read classical literature?"

PostPosted: Wed May 25, 2016 10:29 am

So many strings involved, that sounded like an understatement, even from the secondhand information Jordan had. But as Lawr went on, Jordan turned to give him a look of frank disbelief. All the irons this guy had in the fire and all the s**t he'd pulled, and he was trying to hit on Jordan now?

He shook his head a little and turned to scoop the minipet from the holding carrier back into its tank and close the top. If the mini hadn't been obviously terrified of human hands, he might have spent a little time petting it, but he was pretty sure that would get him bitten. "I read a lot," he replied. "What's your particular definition of classical literature? I find it varies from person to person." He was just going to ignore the commentary on his tastes as well.

Jordan simply earned himself a wolfish sort of smile for his look, Lawrence always aware of how risky his dares were but deciding to take the chance anyway. You never knew frankly when someone might unexpectedly bite or call one's bluff only to find it was no bluff at all.

Removing a length of strange vine-like intestines or some approximation thereof he looked puzzled for a second before he returned his attention to what he'd been asked.

"Milton is my favourite." he stated. "But I have a particular inclination towards other puritan poets and medieval morality plays. Other novels, Dante's Inferno, Doctor Faustus, The Illiad and the Odyssey. The staples. Primarily biblical literature and moral works. I would certainly not claim to hold the general definition of the term by any stretch. "

Jordan moved to the next tank in line and began the cleaning process again, meticulously careful about the procedure. It was true that he was feeling the lack of contact by now, getting hungry for friendly touch, but it would take a hell of a lot more isolation than this to make him consider the offer. It might be a weird joke of some kind, or an attempt to unsettle him. "Morality plays, huh? Picking anything useful up from the lessons they were intended to teach? I find Milton a little melodramatic myself, but that was the style then, of course. Made any forays into modern retellings of epic poetry?"

He glanced at the dissection, mildly unnerved by the process and the strange innards. It was interesting in its own way, but while it wasn't particularly gory with this specimen, it was still a certain kind of gruesome.

"I find many of the intended teachings present in morality plays have become out of step with the generally accepted nuances of the modern world." It didn't help that allegory and metaphor were mysterious to him and more often than not a language he found it difficult to speak. "It is amusing that I found it easier to comprehend the post-reformation era when all pretence of sin and virtue fell by the wayside and the sole aim was to demonise one's enemy rather than to focus on moral adaption of oneself. Moral lessons are more difficult to find in a reliable way than one might think. Rodney is helpful in this field." Reaching into the minipet he carefully removed another organ only to find himself once again surprised that rather than a kidney the creature had a kidney bean, which he removed and incredulously placed on the table in front of himself, resisting the urge to comment.

"Admittedly " he went on "Melodrama has always been my style to some extent. I appreciate passion in most of its forms. Can't say I have read too many modern adaptations with perhaps the exception of Liz Lochead's Medea and of course James Joyce. I should enjoy branching out somewhat. Poetry is rather pleasing, particularly poetry with an elaborate and pleasing rhyme scheme."

He seemed somewhat distracted even as he worked, taking time now and then to watch Jordan and to appreciate the other man like a fine wine. "I always had the feeling you were wasted on this island from the sparse few comments you have deigned to make on twitter." he said with a small smile.

"Is he?" Jordan found himself mildly curious about Rodney, aware that the memories he had of the dream version of the man were incorrect for this world, but aware also that the differences were almost always a few relatively short steps sideways from the real world as he knew it. What was this Rodney actually like in comparison? That was a weird thing to be wondering, he knew, but maybe it was as much a natural question as it was weird.

He cleaned out the tank he was working on and added fresh bedding. "I prefer prose most of the time," he said. "I've read a couple of interesting takes on Beowulf, although that's a different subject and era from the subjects you're interested in, I guess."

The compliment earned a wary sideways look. "It's a career path that I didn't anticipate, but I find myself enjoying it," he said coolly.

"Yes." Lawrence said almost a little standoffishly. "He is. He's very meek, polite and quiet. Like a mouse." And there was an almost feline element to the way he flexed his fingers in the twitching creature.

"Seamus Heaney's translation is admittedly the only one I have read of Beowulf, I am not very fond of the ending." The ultimate aging, failing and demise of the king was less his speed than the glorious youth.

"I wish I could enjoy it half as much." he said. "I have to make my entertainment where I can find it, it just so happens that the island is uniquely positioned for some of my favourite hobbies. I've found boredom breeds receptiveness." He dragged his finger through the strange green fluid that had spilled onto the table and looked at Jordan. "In most people. I've had my eye on you for quite a long time, intelligence is attractive."

"I couldn't and still can't understand why Harrison had so many negative things to say about you."
