In which a young troll becomes lost in the woods and makes some new friends

It was that time of sweep when things overlapped in Sephos' gardening. Things he had planted - plump tubers and rhizomes - needed to be harvested, and more delicate herbs, clover, and ground cover needed to be planted. What that basically translated to was a lot of digging, a lot of sweating, and sore arms every night.

"Maku!" he called out, stretching his back as he rested, briefly with his various digging tools amidst his current hole, "Could you help me out here?" It would be so much easier to get everything done if his lusus helped him. Maku's massive fingers could easily scrape through dirt, and his roots... Well, Sephos didn't like to think about his terrifying, prehensile roots too much, and Maku kept them innocuous in the nighttime, but when Sephos asked for holes, Maku used them overday. Soil, apparently, was no match for them.

"Maku?" Sephos looked around for his lusus when the treebeast didn't immediately appear and help. It wasn't hard to find him - Maku was enormous and nearby. But he was distracted, playing fondly with the avian beasts and small scurrying things that were attracted to the flowers in his leafy hair and beard. Sephos frowned unhappily, the sweet, nectary smell of those flowers tickling his nose. It wasn't that it was a terrible smell - no, Maku's flowers were delightful. It was how distracted it made his lusus and all the other things about his lusus - and him - that they represented. Or heralded.

Sephos looked away. "I can do it myself..." he grumbled, resuming his digging around a particularly obstinate root. He didn't want to deal with those issues. Not yet.

Engrav was cold, and it was dark, and he was pretty sure there were howlbeasts out here in the forest. At least, he thought he'd heard a howl or two. Maybe that had just been his stomach though. He never should have come to this woods, with their stupid trees and stupid roots and stupid howlbeasts and stupid -

With a shout, Engrav pitched forward, pinwheeling his arms. Unable to catch himself, the young troll ended up on his face with a mouthful of dirt and some scrapes he would only find later.

"And stupid rocks. Stupid, stupid rocks."

Morrimom croaked ahead of him.

"Stop laughing at me! You have four legs! If you trip with one you still have three, you don't know what it's like to be an uncoordinated... NO! STOP RUNNING OFF!"

Engrav's lusus bounded off through the trees without sparing him a backward glance. If he didn't know better, he'd have thought by her heavy breathing that she was... smelling something? She'd definitely never done that before. Actually, he wasn't sure she even had a sense of smell. Could you smell through a beak? He'd have to check into it later. If there was a later, and he wasn't eaten by ravenous howlbeasts. He definitely hoped there would be a later.

"Wait, you nub-headed feather-dolt! Get back here!" Engrav pushed himself off the ground without falling over again, and staggered to his feet after the wayward lusus. "What's even so interesting out here? Nothing but trees and dung!"

Then, he saw the light in the distance.

"Civilization!" He exclaimed, stumbling towards the small house in the distance. Morrimom was heading towards it like a white streak. Hopefully whoever was inside wouldn't be too unkind to share some food and maybe a map?

Sephos straightened his back with what he felt was, if not audible, than a feel-able creak and glowered out of the hole towards his hive, a few trees and a clearing away. "Hey. You." he called out, "What do you want?"

Maku turned mildly at the screaming, but he didn't think it was one of Sephos's friends so he wasn't going to intervene... and then he saw it. A four-legged bird creature coming towards him. Hooommmm hoooom! he greeted, offering a hand as an easy way to climb to his arm, and then to his flowers. Yes. Come to his flowers, potential new symbiotic pollenator friend.

The yellowblooded troll, for the moment, remained ignored.

Well, it was a nice... garden, Engrav guessed? What even was all this mess around here? Looked weedy. Maybe other troll had found some ruins or something here and was squatting? Not really a lot of other explanation for all this overgrowth around. Seemed disorganized.

"Hey, did you know that there's howlbeasts in the woods out here? It's dangerous! What is all this junk lying around anyway? " Engrav looked over at Morrimom, who was making herself right at home.

Wait, was she COOING?

Engrav stared at his lusus for a moment, dumbfounded. She was cooing quietly like some sort of tiny featherbeast and rubbing her head against the other huge, leafy lusus. It was... offputting. She was usually so reserved and distrusting, and here she was making eyes at the giant treebeast. Engrav turned back to the Greenblood and narrowed his eyes.

"What is he doing to Morrimom? I'm keeping an eye on you. You look suspicious. Are you using some kind of lusus mind control or something? I can see that shifty look in your eyes! Admit it!"

Engrav was pretty sure lusus mind-control wasn't a thing, but his mom was definitely acting strangely. Much less murderous than usual.

Well, if she wanted the flowers - the treebeast brushed his flowering beard out towards Morrimom invitingly - she could have them. She could stay with him as long as she wanted. Wasn't that nice?

"Yeah, theres howlbeasts?" said Sephos. No s**t there were howlbeasts in the woods, but they usually didn't bother him. Having a giant lusus and living underground (and having howlbeastbane flowers) kept them out of his business. "And it's not junk, it's my garden." he said, peering out of the hole he was currently digging, dirty arms crossed over his chest.

"Lusus... what?" Sephos was a little taken aback by the barrage of accusations. Ridiculous accusations. Were those even possible things?! "No?!" What other answer could he give?

"What do you want?"
