Everything was so nerve wracking, this was her first week away from the swirling sands and even though she did her best to tell the counselors that she'd rather have a room with no one she was still paired up with another student. The Naga begrudgingly made her way through the halls, head down, defeated, her backpack slung over her shoulder. This was going to be terrible, she just knew it. Well maybe her new roommate would be skilled in sign language because that was obviously how she communicated or maybe her roommate would be open minded enough to try and learn sign language or at least try to learn it?
Mitra sighed. It was not going to be as easy as that, she just felt it in her bones. She paused, just staring at the door maybe she should just avoid the situation entirely and go straight to the administration to see if she could get a room change? Immediately she straightened up. Her parents didn't teach her to be cowardly, even with her disability! With her head held high she knocked on the door and just prayed that it would be someone who was nice enough to accept her as she was.

This was her moment, things were finally amazing! She actually had her own room, she could do whatever she wanted, she could throw fancy little freshling parties, she could wear whatever she wanted in her dorm. Life. Was. Good. Rasia put on a catchy tune and began dancing around her dorm, she didn't have anyone to bother her, no one to tell her to do her homework, she was a free lady! Maybe she'd try to plan some new outfits for herself? Oh! Or maybe she'd try to change up how she did her makeup? Or better yet she'd figure out a new hair routine!
Rasia was in her own little world when she heard the knock at the door. Maybe she'd just ignore it? Maybe it was a mistake! She sauntered off to the bathroom and bagan playing with her hair in the mirror. It looked so good down but maybe if she curled it a little bit more? Or maybe she could braid it? Oh! Maybe she could straighten it because her hair was naturally kind of wavy? The options were endless and everything was finally falling into place.
That is, until she heard the knock again. Ugh! Okay fine maybe it wasn't a mistake. She grumpily made her way to the door, flinging it open and staring at the person in the doorway. “What can I help you with? Can't you see that I'm busy?”

The naga curled her tail around herself as the door was flung open and the upset nixie appeared. With wide eyes and her tail curled around herself she meekly put her hand to her head and signed a simple 'Hello'. Even though she was able to read lips she chose to ignore the rude greeting of her new roommate. She wasn't one to judge someone on first impressions alone. Who was to say that the nixie was rude or mean, maybe she was just having a bad night or maybe she was stressed about her studies.
After a few moments of silence, Mitra came to the horrible realization that her new roommate didn't know the tiniest bit of sign language. She sighed lightly before reaching into her backpack and grabbing her notebook and a pen out. She quickly scribbled, 'Hello, I'm Mitra! I'm new to the school and I'm your new roommate! It's very nice to meet you!' Mitra let the news sink in before she slowly slithered forward, squeezing past the nixie.
She took a moment to look around the dorm, this was so exciting! There were little chairs and a couch and two bedrooms and even a decently sized bathroom! She couldn't wait to make herself at home! Maybe the nixie would be her first new friend, too!

As the scene played out in front of her, she stood there, mouth hanging open, eyes wide, a general look of shock on her face. No. Was this really happening right now? Her. Rasia. She was getting a roommate? This had to be a nightmare. Why would they give her one now after letting her have her own place for this long? And why a deaf girl?! This was cruel and she was two seconds away from throwing the biggest temper tantrum of her life. Not only did she now have to share her space, but she had to share it with someone that she couldn't even talk to! No gossiping, no giggling, no nothing! This was not how it was supposed to go. Hopefully the little naga didn't think she'd learn sign language for her. Rasia wouldn't go that far out of her way, not for a complete stranger at least!
The nixie was still frozen in the doorway as Mitra slipped into her dorm. “Hey! Wait a minute! You can't just barge in here like that! This is my dorm!” She quickly ran after her new roommate, waving her arms wildly. “Look. This stuff is all mine, don't you dare think about taking any of it or even using any of it without talking to me first! If I have to put up with you then I'm going to put down some rules. Do. Not. Touch. My. Stuff. If I EVER catch you in my bedroom I'll...I'll I don't know what I'll do, but it won't be nice! So just don't!” She crossed her arms and eyed the “intruder” down, hoping that her words reached the naga.

As good as she was at reading lips, it was actually harder than usual to make out what her roommate was saying. The nixie was obviously upset about the current situation and the fact that she was all up in Mitra's face about it made the naga curl back up into herself. She did everything she could to hide the involuntary shaking and the tears that were starting to pool up. This wasn't what she wanted. She never thought for a moment that her first day of school would be like this. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all...maybe she should have never left her home town. All she really wanted was to curl up in her bed, her parents around her, and just relax. Home was far away now though, she was just going to have to make the best of the situation that she was thrown into.
'I'm sorry that you're so upset, I promise I won't touch your things and I swear to you that I will not go into your bedroom. I'll stay out of your way, it'll be like you still have the room to yourself! Please, just give me a chance. I'm new and I'm scared and I just want to attend classes. I will not get in your way.' Her writing was very shaky and as she lowered the notebook she looked at her roommate and tried her best to give her a warm smile.

Oh no she didn't. For the first time in her young life, Rasia actually felt like a total jerk. It was definitely a combination of Mitra's note and how pathetically adorable that smile was. Rasia puffed out her cheeks, crossing her arms. “Ughhh fine! As long as you promise you're not going to be all up in my space, I guess I can give this a shot. Just...don't cry okay. You're making me feel bad for you and I don't normally feel that way. Let me give you the tour, that way you don't accidentally stumble into my space.” She took the naga by the hand and lead her around the dorm room.
It wasn't much, but it was something. Rasia had taken the time to spruce up the room as much as she could. She had gotten some nice furniture by saving up her allowance, she had gotten some art for the walls so things didn't look bare, she had even bought little knick knacks to make the dorm feel more like home. “Okay so this is your room,” She opened the door to let Mitra see everything for herself, “Sorry that it doesn't look much like a bedroom, I've been using it as a studio. It's where I pick my outfits for the day and do my makeup and everything. So I guess I'll have to start moving some of this stuff into my room. It's not much, but that futon folds out into a bed so you can use that for now.” She took Mitra's hand again and took her back out into the hallway. Rasia put her hands on her bedroom door, showing off the 'Keep Out' sign and looked back at Mitra making sure she was actually understanding it.

Okay, things seemed to be going smoother now things might not be as bad as she originally had thought! She slithered behind the nixie as her roommate showed her around. Mitra was starting to not miss home as much as she got the grand tour. When the door to her room was opened Mitra's eyes widened, it was so roomy! Her bedroom back home was no where near as big as this one! How in Below would she even get enough stuff to fill this place up? She glanced over her shoulder at her backpack, suddenly she was concerned that she didn't bring enough stuff with her. Hopefully she'd be able to decorate and make the place more like home.
They finished the tour of her bedroom and then they paused, Mitra looked up to see her roommate pointing at the 'Keep Out' sign. Ugh. Seriously? Hadn't she already said she wasn't going to go in there? It took everything in her power not to roll her eyes and instead she just smile and nodded, letting her roommate know that she had indeed understood that the bedroom was completely off limits. Maybe the nixie had some deep secrets that she was embarrassed about? Oh well. Better to just let it be and not make a big deal about it.
Mitra took her notepad and quickly scribbled, 'I think I'm going to head to my room and start to unpack the few things I have, if you don't want to move your things right now, you don't have to. Thank you for the tour, though! I never caught your name...' Mainly because the nixie was too busy rambling on about her space, but whatever.

Okay well, at least she had gotten her point across. Rasia gave herself a mental high five due to the fact that she managed to communicate her point clearly to a deaf girl. It just further reiterated how amazing she was. “Oh, I'm Rasia, I figured you'd know that by now, I'm a pretty big deal at the school. I don't blame you though, you're new and all.” And now she was mentally patting herself on the back for being such a popular kid. Ego? What Ego? As Mitra slithered away Rasia flopped down onto the couch, grabbing her water from the side table and taking a sip of it.
That's when it hit her---she finally had a roommate! She could do a bunch of girly things with her, they could braid each others hair, do little fashion shows, play with makeup! Bingo! Rasia immediately bolted upright and giddily made her way to Mitra. Rasia grabbed the little naga by the shoulders and just smiled at her, “Mitra! Let's have a makeover party! I can show you how to be...almost as beautiful as me! Come on!” Without really waiting for her roommate to say anything she tugged the deaf girl over to the couch and put one finger up to let her know she'd be right back. “This is going to be soooo much fun, you're going to love this!”
With that she bolted into her room, grabbed her makeup and her hair accessories and made her way back to the confused looking naga.

Wait a minute. What did Rasia just say? She couldn't make it out because the nixie had ran off in the middle of talking to her. Something about a moreover? What was that even supposed to be? Mitra prided herself in her intelliect, to be sure that wasn't want the nixie meant, that word was surely above Rasia's reading level. She snickered to herself, if someone else could be mean and rude to her it justified her returning it, didn't it?
Her happiness quickly faded out as her roommate sauntered back in, holding a comedically large amount of items in her tiny arms. It looked like she was ready to start her own beauty salon. Maybe this wasn't going to be a good fit for her afterall. The nixie may not want anything to do with her, but she was a girly girl and Mitra really just wanted to focus on her studies, not focus on all the different shades of eyeshadow that would complement her colors. She'd indulge Rasia for tonight, but first thing tomorrow she would go complain to the head office about her dorm placement.

Making sure not to drop anything, Rasia flopped down on the couch next to her new roommate. The little nixie was grinning from ear to ear, she didn't have many friends, but she was definitely a pro at things like this. Home makeover: The Rasia Edition! “Alright, here we go!” She dove in, undoing Mitra's hair from the buns. "Oh my gosh your hair is so pretty! Why do you keep it up like that all the time?! I think we need to do some kind of fancy style for you!" Rasia went to work, braiding the sides of Mitra's hair and pulling the braiding back into one messy bun.
After Rasia perfected her roommate's hair she moved on to makeup. The nixie started holding up different color shades of lipstick and blush and eyeshadow next to Mitra's face to figure out what colors would complement her, the naga was definitely a winter complexion, the cooler colors looked much better on her than some of the bright summer or spring colors. In the midst of her taking her time to pick colors, Mitra had dozed off. There went her big makeover plan! Rasia stood up and sighed, that was such a bust, before she went back to her room she cleaned her stuff up and covered the sleeping naga with a blanket. Maybe they wouldn't be a good fit afterall? Rasia quietly made her way to her bedroom, one makeover was a failure, but now she had all this time to give herself one!
