Betoto receives 6 dmg.Not ever in his life had he seen so many people. Not ever in his life had he been in a desert, hot enough to bake his skin and instantly exhaust him. Not ever in his life had he had an opportunity to fight another person. Not with a blade and not with magic. To be fair, magic was a mostly new concept to Aldren. He'd never wielded it at length and had yet to do so at all with much ease. Even the staff he held, his staff, still seemed grossly unfamiliar.
Much like everyone else in this place.
The only reason he thought to partake in any tournament at all was because of Zumei. She seemed so eager, so excited for this opportunity, that it seemed like one he shouldn't allow himself to miss. It didn't make him any more comfortable with the situation as a whole. But it was all in good fun, and it wasn't as though he could actually be hurt. With a nod to the girl across from him, he let the unfamiliar threads of his magic crawl to his fingertips.
"Okay," Aldren hummed softly. "Let's see if I can make this work..." The spell should not have been a complicated one. In fact, at home, it was the easiest element to summon. And maybe he should've realized the climate favored it beforehand, but he didn't, and summoning ice shards in a desert was harder then he imagined. It wasn't powerful magic, but he doubted it would get better, so he gave it his best shot.

Betoto's green eyes scanned the stands, looking at the mixture of races watching her first ever fight. Her father disapproved of her participating, yet it didn't stop the young leaf girl. She never imagined that she'd actually go through with signing up but when she found Namagg, her brother, up close cheering her on, she knew that she could do it and it would give her much needed practice in the real world.
Gripping the sword, she let her gaze follow the Ice boy across from her. The sun was hot in Oba and he seemed to stuggle a bit to start. The lands of ice must have been normal for him, so this was throwing him off.
In the moment of her observation, ice shards came zipping at her. She quickly moved to dodge, succeeded and slid on her leg to get closer to her opponent. Once she was in range, her blade moved with her, an extension of her arm, and was able to make contact before jumping back to her side of the field.

Betoto receives 0 dmg.It definitely seemed like she was significantly faster than him. He didn't know what he expected from his initial attack, maybe a little more oomph or a little more awe. But the woman across from him didn't seem deterred at all. She zipped away from his spell, came in close, and sliced back at him. He didn't even have time to dodge before her blade made contact, leaving a gash across his arm and shredding the fabric of his shirt. He stared at it, wide-eyed, then back at her.
With no formal combat training in magic, blade, or otherwise, he really shouldn't be so surprised. This was supposed to be for 'fun,' anyway, right? Not that getting hurt was usually any fun, mind you, but that seemed irrelevant.
There was nothing to do about it now. He was already here and in this. Giving up at the outset wouldn't do him any good. So heaving in a deep breath, Aldren called on his magic again. Not ice this time, since that hadn't worked as well as he'd hoped. He didn't exactly know a great sum of spells, but anything would be better at this point. Or so he thought. When the wind picked up and whipped a stream of sand out, he thought for sure that ought to buy him at least a moment to gather himself, but the flickering, fluttering grains didn't even come close to her. She didn't even have to move to dodge his attack, and Aldren frowned.
