It was summer, which meant Gwen had nothing but free time to explore. Messenger bag full of journals, she took to the beach in search of strange and eldritch finds washing up on the shores, or maybe a sighting of the mysterious witch so many people talked about. What she found instead were seashells. "Scallop, scallop, clam," she droned on as she combed the sand, turning each leftover fossil for search of something ominous or glowing, which meant it was a quest pickup. "Clam, scallop, tunicate, snai--CRAB, that's a crab!" The teen nearly screamed as the flung the curly shell out of sight, its living resident helplessly tossed aside. She held her hands to her chest, just to make sure she still had all of her fingers, and then giggled nervously to let off the steam from the scare. "Okay, where were we...clam, scallop, clam...bottle cap?" That wasn't a natural part of the beach, and she picked it up, turning the trinket over in her hands. It came off of a beer bottle, and it looked like it might have been fresh.

Chel wasn't one for the beach most of the time (messed up makeup, hair whipping in her face, shoes filled with sand- yuck) but lately she'd been going more because summer was burgeoning on the horizon and all of her friends had wanted a taste of the sun.
For now she'd been sunbathing on a towel, attempting to convince herself that she could tan when in fact all that would happen was a tomato red sunburn. She could at least pretend.
What interrupted said sunburn-tan-in-progress was a screech from a nearby rock from some girl flinging a crab (thankfully nowhere near her). "Ay yo shorty keep it down, would you?"

Gwen turned on her heels when she heard a voice, her eyes wide. "Ooops, sorry!" she called out, tossing the bottle cap aside as she assessed the other beach-goer. "Your hair is really pretty, you know that?" Gwen hopped down the rocks, moving a few steps closer while she reached for another shell. "Mom says I can't dye my hair, but when I turn eighteen I'm definitely going to put streaks in it or something."

"Thanks man," Chel said with the same slack-jaw grin she always had. "And I say ******** yer mom. Dye yer s**t now, no reason t'wait."
Chel was not a very strong advocate for filial piety. amitotic why is she ... so cute ...

Gwen's already-red face flushed further. "Nah, I'd be super grounded, and then I couldn't work on my blog. But in eight months, my hair is gonna look like a grapefruit." She took out her phone and faced it towards the ocean, snapping a photo. "Speaking of, have you seen any strange activities today? Seagulls with too many eyes, orbs of light, stuff like that?" "It's for my blog," she added, as an afterthought. chiickadee It's her job that's all she does

"Not the blog," Chel said sarcastically, already having closed her eyes and put her sunglasses back on. What was one more excited beachgoer to her day? Not much.
"Strange s**t? Saw a girl countin' mussels on a rock, that count?"

"Really?" Gwen's grin widened, and she swiveled her phone around towards the rocks, where she might snap a photo. "Did she have webbed feet, or a third ear? What about--" She paused, realizing she'd been duped. "Hey," she huffed, crossing her arms. "I'll have you know that, 'despite my quirks', I am completely mundane." She made quotations as she said 'quirks', as if it was a phrase she'd taken from somebody else.

Chel let out a snorting kind of laugh that gave a "haw haw" kind of noise to it. It wasn't a pretty laugh, but it was the kind that made you laugh along with it.
"Yeah yer as mundane as it gets or whatever. So you found anythin' good?" Chel wasn't actually all that interesting, having closed her eyes and all but gone to sleep, but she was always willing to entertain at least.

If Gwen had been upset, she certainly didn't stay that way for long, laughing in time with the woman. Who cared if it might have been directed at her? Chuckles were infectious. "Well not much today," Gwen admitted sheepishly, combing her toes through the sand, "just some seashells...Found a shark's tooth about half an hour ago...oh!" She tapped on her phone a few times, then turned it towards Chel. The screen showed what looked like one of the girl's selfies, and in background drifted something resembling lens flare. "I got visual confirmation of supernatural orbs in my background last week," she chirped, zooming in on the lens flare. "Isn't that awesome?"

"A shaaark's tooth?" Chel asked with her lazy drawl coming out, "Damn sugar."
She still had her eyes closed as she was sunbathing, but she could tell by the pause that the girl had either left or was waiting for her to do something. She took a chance to sit up and open her eyes, greeted with a phone.
Okay- Chel was a sucker for innocent folks and right now this one was taking the cake. She thought a lens flare was a UFO. That was too naive.
"Wow that's a big one," Chel said, willing to go along with it. "You told everyone on yer blog right?"

"It's a post I'll be finishing in the next day or so, I wanna make sure it's as informative as possible," she nodded sagely, thumbing for her phone for some more interesting photos. "I mean, I guess that's a spoiler, but you probably haven't read my blog yet anyway, so everything's a spoiler." She took a breath, watching the waves, and then she put her phone away. "Have you heard about the Witch on the Beach?" she asked gravely, putting emphasis on her words. "Supposedly she just kind of...walks around and does spooky stuff."

Shockingly, Chel had not read her blog. Chel didn't read much of anything if she could help it.
"Sounds like a drunk chick havin' a good time," she said in reference to the "witch on the beach." She chose not to talk about the blog lest urging her to read it came up. "Spooky stuff like what?"

"Like..." Gwen paused, at a loss for words when it came to the specifics. All she really remembered was that it was 'spooky stuff'. "...okay, so she'll read your fortune for a pack of gum, but she never eats the gum. She likes cigarettes, though? And she can like...float...?" "I've never actually seen her," Gwen admitted forlornly, running a hand through her hair. "But everyone has stories about her, so she's gotta be real, right...?"

"If she was just a hobo, then I could have found her already," Gwen huffed, her face beginning to flush pink under all her freckles. "You can't have lived here long, pretty much everyone's heard something about Sunny."
