Cain was unfortunately working an overnight shift in the infirmary. Which meant what little sleep he was running on, wasn't likely to last, so that meant coffee. Coffee with lots and lots of sugar. The pot was already gurgling in the background, bringing just a glint of hope to the lifers light blue grey eyes. Thick yellow frames were pushed up nose and a loud sigh sounded from behind the desk.

It wasn't time to make rounds yet, coffee wasn't done yet and whomever was suppose to be helping him out tonight hadn't decided to show up yet.

Yeah this was going to be a great night. The man feathered a hand through blonde hair and pulled at the ends a bit. It was getting longer, not to long yet but long enough for Cain to be debating a trip back for a hair cut. Maybe another dye job since he missed having dark hair. He was sitting on a pretty hefty stack of cash right now so maybe a vacation was in order.

If Cain had any hopes of having a relatively pain free--albeit long--night shift, he was in for a world of disappointment. Though maybe his opinion of Zeke had changed, just a little, since the first time they'd been tossed together on evening rotation. Not that the bristly little Life would admit to it if it had. The older of the two liked to believe he'd at least left an impression on the younger. Something more lingering than bruises or bite marks.

Apparently he'd get the chance to find out. One hand wrapped around mug full of long cold coffee, the other tucking a few files and a worn notebook against the side of his body, Zeke made his way towards the front desk, only to stop when he noticed the back of a familiar, blonde head.

Well tonight just got a whole lot more interesting, he mused silently to his partner. Whose response was an exasperated sigh and the mental equivalent of what he was sure was a roll of eyes and a shake of her head. Zeke just grinned lazily as he sank down into the remaining chair and set his things down on the desk in front of him. Seemingly ignoring Cain, at least for the moment.

Hie long until he has to comment? Bet it's within six minutes.

Cain was checking things on the desk when he heard the footsteps. Not bothering to look up he sternly spoke out, less than three minutes after the other sat down, "you're late." Whoever it was, was already annoying the blonde. The sweet smell of coffee filled the little area of the little unit though and settled Cain. Enough that he bothered to look over towards the other body.

Light blue grey eyes widened as they landed on a very familiar face. Zeke. It just had to be Zeke again didn't it? How long had it been since they had come into contact? Not long enough reasoned Cain when he felt a creep of goosebumps up skin. The kind that only seemed to sneak up on Cain at night when he was thinking of things he shouldn't.

Things like how that damned lazy little smirk made him want to bite it off.

The blonde refused to acknowledge the heat creeping up to cheeks. Instead he simply got up and went for the coffee pot to get a mug of coffee. "And what do you have to smile about? You will be working tonight. " Cain scoffed as he poured some energy into the mug. He was going to need it if he had to deal with all of this tonight.

Zeke's response was to the chastising tone was a roll of his shoulders and a very noncommittal hum. It didn't matter, not to Zeke, and certainly not as the small Lifer looked up and realized who he was talking to. The wide, startled eyes had been expected, even the blush, but what hadn't come, what he'd expected even more, was a much more scathing comment than what was delivered.

It had Zeke folding his hands on the desk top in front of him, turning slightly in his chair so he was half facing his work partner for the evening. That same, smug smile lingering, even as it was commented on and Cain was moving to fetch himself a cup of coffee. "I work plenty of nights," he commented idly, reaching for his mug of cold coffee and glancing down at it in a considering sort of way. "Why should tonight be any different?"

But it was, of course, because now he had a constant source of entertainment.

"How's about you freshen up my mug while you're up, hmm?" The mug in question was held out to the blonde.

Light eyes watched the stream of brown fill the cup, then a slender hand moved to the sugar cubes. Taking roughly six and putting them into the warm liquid, a stir, then sip was taken to test the flavor. The blondes freckled nose wrinkled then a few more cubes were tossed in. Mainly this was done to keep himself busy as body calmed down from its weird excitement of seeing the idiot.

When Zeke turned Cain took another drink, eyes narrowing in view just above the mug as it swallowed his nose in a drink. Listening to the man a roll of eyes came, work with Zeke was questionable. Mostly because the other man, in all Cain's meeting seemed to be rather on the selfish side and not to mention distractible. Another drink and Cain struggled to find the normal bite used in tone with the other, things had changed in views of the other, but Cain wasn't going to admit it.

Not yet.

The coffee cup was held out and eyes narrowed in on it with a lift of chin, this ******** right here, goodlooking or not, "oh sure, I'd love to even though you have two ******** arms and two ******** legs. Would you like some sugar with that too, maybe I can bring it over, sit in your lap and help you drink it?" Cain purred sarcastically as a hand up to flip the man off before it went towards hip to rest.

And even through all that his treacherous body left a smile upon lips.

Whatever Cain had been hoping to accomplish with that bristling retort, it didn't hit its mark. Zeke's gaze remained steady, features set in lazy amusement, and only the smallest twitch of his lips would give the Life any hint that maybe he'd said too much. "That would be wonderful," he drawled, digging his toe into the tile to push his chair away from the desk, closer to Cain and the coffee maker. "Would make the rest of the evening go by much more pleasantly, that's for sure." He slouched, patting one of his thighs invitingly with his free hand.

"Oh." It came a second or two later, as if he'd nearly forgotten. "Sugar would be nice, too. Thanks." An endearment was there, resting at the top of his tongue, but he resisted in favor of not having hot(or cold) coffee poured on him.

Grinning up at the smaller man, Zeke set his half full mug on the counter beside the coffee maker, then nudged it an inch or so closer to Cain with the tip of his finger.

It was all a little much, but he was seldom the one that started these little pissing contests. Caun's rash temper was to blame. Regardless though, whatever game they would be playing, the Mist played to win.

Of course.

Zeke hadn't changed one bit in the time they hadn't seen each other. The older man was still annoying to the tenth degree, then again, maybe now it was just a little bit charming. Cain sighed and snatched the nudged coffee mug from the counter. Turning his back to Zeke after eyes lingered on the offered thigh a bit to long he started to fill the cup. "You're not charming, you pain in the a**." He said as the cup got to a reasonable fill. Putting the coffee pot back inside the make the cup was sat on the counter to be sugared up.

Was he really doing this, yes, yes he was god damn it.

He still had his pride though and WOULD NOT sit on the other mans lap. This he told himself while turning to hand the freshened mug of coffee back to Zeke. "Here old man, don't burn the roof of your mouth because I'm not blowing on it." A snort and he took a drink of his own coffee, leaning against the counter and watching the other man. Pretending not to be waiting for a less obnoxious invitation to have a more pleasant night.

Was it just him, or was he starting to win the cranky little lifer over? Zeke 's smirk only grew as Cain insisted he wasn't charming. He knew better, but what was the point of arguing? Besides, right that moment he was going for obnoxious, rather than trying to lay on the charm. The latter didn't seem to with with Cain, too easy for him to shoot it down, pretend he wasn't interested, hide. Poking at him, that was how the get him to open up.

His coffee was handed back, significantly warming, and he took a small sip of it before lowering the mug to rest on his knee. That comment was too easy. Way, way too easy. The Mist didn't need the hand outs, he'd wait for a much better opportunity.

Cain, however, seemed to be waiting for something. He had taken up post against the counter, gaze steadily watching, and Zeke gave him a curious glance, head tilting to one side as he looked up at him. "Something on your mind?" The mug came up again for a longer drink.

b*****d.

The lifers mug came up and a stubborn reply of, "nope," sounded before he took a sip and swallowed. After which a foot kicked him from the counter and Cain moved back to his seat. "But you should be use to company without thoughts right?" He added with a smirk then shuffled papers on the desk.

Pulling one out a log of times was looked over for the last checks on the patients. Soon it would be time to go back and distribute medicines and such. Cain took another drink and sat his mug between the space of him and Zeke's left behind papers. Not at all above ignoring the Mist all night if engage meant he had to openly admit to wanting him.

Liar.

His lips twitched as Cain returned to his seat, apparently determined to pretend Zeke wasn't there, but he was sorely mistaken if he thought that was going to be possible. Didn't he know by now? Pushing buttons was one of the Mist's favorite past times. "Didn't think they took brainless individuals in the Life division," he countered absently, turning the page in his notebook and pulling his glasses out of his pocket to slip them on.

It seemed like the only people he spent any real time with these days were in Life division.

There was a beat, a moment for Cain to wonder if that was all he had to say on the matter, and then he'd continue. "Though they did take you, so who knows." It was said so casually, so utterly benignly, that he could have been talking about anything at all, and not aiming a sharp verbal jab at the cranky trainee seated beside him.

Zeke wasn't fooling anyone in the room, they both knew he was being obnoxious on purpose. Cain was not amused by the mans typical antics, only maybe just a little amused, secretly of course. Blonde short curls were smoothed down on a grumpy, "oh no my feelings, moron." Some of the nights paperwork was passed to the other man and Cain turned to look him over. A sharp look delivered as some of that old attitude filtered back, Zeke making it once more easy to be genuinely pissy with him.

Why of all the damned people was it Zeke? He needed to find more people to sleep with him. But that was going to be hard for someone like himself, which was why he was trying to play nice and settle down.

The blondes eyes rolled and he leaned back in chair taking another drink of coffee. A glance to the call light switch board to make sure all was well and he stood. "I'm going to walk the hall..." He announced needing something to do with himself.

Large hands set the notebook he'd been reading down so they could knit together above it, the man tipping his head just a hint to make it easier to watch the trainee beside him. It was amusing to watch the rise and fall of his temper, especially now.

He took the paperwork as it was handed to him, laying on top of the rest of his stack, and glanced down at it obligingly. It wasn't anything that needed immediate attention, so it could be ignored, for now, in favor of other things. Like his continued efforts to dig in deeper beneath Cain's skin. Granted, he was fairly sure he'd already managed to set his hooks in him.

Cain stood, intending to talk a walk around the halls to make sure everything was in order, and Zeke was left with two options. Follow, or remain where he was. The former was probably what the younger man was expecting, which made it so much easier to pick the latter. He gave a hum of assent, glancing up briefly plucking a ball point from the mug of pens on the desk, apparently intending to fill out the paper work Cain had handed off to him. "Give a shout if you need help."

Oh yes, this was all part of the game as well.

"Like hell!" Cain pouted and stormed off down the hall, a**! The trainee moved with a slow pace to try and cool off. This wasn't exactly going the way his body wanted but his mind was pleased. Very pleased since it wasn't a traitor, telling him he could just get what body wanted from Nellie. She was at least less of a jerk!

A sigh and Cain ran a hand down face, dragging it before letting up to peek in a room. Why in the hell was he fighting himself over this, this nonsense. The patient in room appeared to be asleep, as did the next and the last. Which left the blonde at a loss, he had to go back now.

So he went, slowly and dragging his feet with a sour expression. Upon returning Zeke was once more ignored in favor of paper work. Two could play at this game he had decided and he would show Zeke right now who could be the bigger b***h.

That was about the reaction Zeke had been expecting as Cain stomped off down the hall. He was so temperamental, actions ruled completely by his emotions, and it was just too fun to resist poking and prodding to see just what sorts of reactions he could draw out of the small Life.

While he was gone, the Mist managed to finish up what paperwork Cain had handed off to him, and he was slouched down in his chair, one leg up so his ankle was sitting on the opposite knee, reading through the notebook of handwritten notes he'd brought along with him. There was a pen I. His other hand, and his glasses were resting logon his nose. He glanced up as Cain returned, watching as he moved to silently reclaim his seat. Apparently ignoring the larger man beside him.

But for how long would that last?

They could play this game, Zeke could be patient. You needed to be if you wanted to have anything with Harley. The girl was the ultimate tease. So Zeke could wait Cain out, letting the silence build around them until the smaller man broke it.

Cain had a special talent for ignoring people and while it was true he was a creature ruled by emotions it was less hard to be riled up with silence. Silence he could do, it was the constant verbal prodding that got him. Or the physical prodding would work but not the silent treatment. Not after living a life with his family and sister.

This he had.

The small blonde smirked smoothly as he went about his work. Enjoying the silence for the most part and letting it shine all over the freckled face. A lick of finger went slow as he turned the paper of the stapled stack he was working on. A quick jot of word and the finger was licked again as another page turned, a glance given to Zeke and a wink was flashed in mockery of how much Zeke was winning here.

Hehe, little game would at least let him get work done for as long as Zeke kept it up.
