It's only when the street is getting hazy around them, badly-strobed through their eyelashes (and the whole world's going off-balance and their eyes feel hot and their chest feels so so tight) that Alexis realizes belatedly (and much too late to stop what's already in motion), two very important things: 1. They haven't eaten for at least 36 hours. They haven't been hungry for more. Well -- that's not true. Alexis has been hungry for the last twelve hours, but they've ignored it; it's not the sort of ugly gripping pain that eats away at your ribcage, so they can't really be that hungry; but, apparently, they are! 2. They're in the middle of a fairly empty street -- there's maybe a few people around, indistinguishable, blurry -- but, all in all, it's high noon. If nobody gets any help, they just might -- Well. Alexis doesn't end up fully processing that thought, and the reason is: the moment they close their eyes to pray for a moment of steadiness, they stumble and crash to the concrete, nose bleeding from the impact and out like a light.

Jeremiah was not expecting to see someone waver on their feet and then crater to the ground. He's moving quick, pushing people aside, and not even thinking about it. There's too much distance to stop them but he's next to them in the next moment, rolling them over. He knows them. The same one that had been at the forest, the one who had not dropped the knife. The one who had also been at the mansion ... Jeremiah withheld the growl that wanted to escape, instead checking their pulse and then pulling out his handkerchief to stop the blood. His fingers are then patting at their cheek, trying to revive them. If they wake up, he can find out what's going on, otherwise he was going to be putting in a call for an ambulance. ... which, admittedly, his thumb was already on the call button to do so.

Their pulse is steady, at the very least, even if it flutters -- and after a few pointed seconds, Alexis opens their eyes, half-focused (the left one even less so, although it gets in line within a moment), and mumbles something vaguely along the lines of "'m' fine. Leave me 'lone." But they don't sit up - they don't even make an attempt to do anything except vaguely paw Jeremiah's fingers away -- Deep breath. One, two. Their shoulders shake with the effort. "...Jus' need to sit...'s fine..." ...And it's clear when Alexis recognizes Jeremiah, at least, because their eyes go wide in fear and they try to push themself back from him and away. No. No no no. Not him. They're breathing too fast, and given how disoriented they are, it's little more than a pitiful attempt.

They're pale and they look exceedingly unwell. Jeremiah's fingers find the pulse and at least it's solid and there but the flutters are not good. "Then I'll help you sit but I'm not leaving you alone." There's little room for argument with him, especially because Alexis cannot really do much but weakly push at him to go away. It's not even a hard authoritative tone - more one of firm concern. An arm is going around Alexis to help them stand, to keep them steady if need be. The handkerchief is pushed into their hand. "Hold that against your nose if you can manage it." A pause. "If you don't mind, I can also see if you've broken it once you're sitting." It was, at least, the one thing he had far too much experience in. Clearly he's got far too much experience in wrangling youths that don't want to be wrangled. Especially considering that for all that he's holding onto them, the arm he has around them is being as least invasive as possible. Daekie no, really, there's more than one RP wherein he's had to help deal with busted noses on himself and others ... LAWL.

Alexis nods but doesn't say anything further, shaky, their tongue like lead in their mouth now that they're a little more aware of what exactly is going on (deep breath, deep breath, keep your chest from shaking like a leaf you moron). They hold the handkerchief to their nose with a jerky movement, shoulders pulling up and forward -- and then they're moving up, and their free hand clutches at Jeremiah's arm frantically for balance. ...okay. This is...manageable. "Jus' get me out," they mumble. "Don' wanna be here." It's childish, sure, but for all the childishness in it...they can walk well enough. Just unsteadily. azuredream$$$ fun fact: alexis' Fun Fainting Experience is based on the time i was horrendously ill in high school and passed out on a second floor concrete balcony, busted my lip, and had to be wheelchaired out to the car because my legs stopped working!

Jeremiah seriously wonders if he's possibly reliving a moment except that Alexis is not a redhead and this was not ten years ago. There were less campus security involved as well. "Alright," he acquiesces, "but we're going to my vehicle." It is only because they can somewhat walk but they're shaking like they could fall any moment. The grip that they have on him is tight. Thankfully he had actually parked down the street and there were very few people out and about. The passenger side was opened - on the wrong side, Alexis would eventually notice - and Jeremiah encouraged them to have a seat. Never mind that that it clearly, for all that he was an officer, not the typical police vehicle at all. It was his own. "Sit," still that tone of firm concern, "I'm going to get the first aid kit out of my trunk and some water for you." Daekie eep!! that is a very bad experience. worst i've ever had was like bonking my head on a railing because i got dizzy from fever.

Things do have a tendency to repeat, in this town; but perhaps this time it's much less 'the wheel of fate' and moreso similar personalities at work. Aleksy was the first they'd gone to for work -- and not the last - but things work out that way. For better or for worse, at least. "Fine," Alexis mumbles, clinging onto Jeremiah so tightly their fingers are going white - halfway because they don't trust their legs, and halfway because right now they're not going to deny the help. It's hard enough to accept help as it is - even when it's directly threatening their health - but he's a cop. What choice've they got? They sit down in the passenger seat like their entire form's gone boneless, gazing at Jeremiah with something midway between fear and anxiety. It's more emotion than they'd normally show; but, again -- they have little choice.

Jeremiah's face was, oddly enough, not entirely neutral. Lips are pressed to a thin line as he looked Alexis over once and then nodded when they sat and acquiesced. Only because they were in such bad shape. He left them for a moment, going to his open the trunk of his car and pull out the first aid kit and a bottle of water (things he kept in there for witnesses and just because it was never a bad idea). Jeremiah was back and giving Alexis the bottle of water. The closures on the first aid kit are popped open and a towelette - just a regular one, not antiseptic - is torn open. "Think you can clean your face up or you want me to get it for you?" Their hands look shaky. Overall he is still not quite certain that he shouldn't get paramedics involved but for now he was going to trust them. If they got any worse, well ... Then he'd make his call.

"I've got it -" Alexis stops just short of saying I'm fine, because they're not, they're not and it's the most textbook bullshit there is, and they know Jeremiah won't listen to that. He's already trying to help them. (God knows why. Alexis doesn't get it. What the hell does he get out of of this?) They clean up their face rhythmically, methodically (the handkerchief isn't too bad; it's less blood than it looks like), the way someone who's done this a few too many times would; it's not a novelty, and it's barely even annoying. ...Then again, it's not hard to get like that. Just one too many stupid decisions at the wrong time. (They drink down the water like they're drowning, after. Gulps a little too long - no ill effects. They're not choking on it.) When their face is clean, bleeding slowed to a trickle, they look over at Jeremiah. "...should be fine in a bit. Just -- " Their free arm gestures in a sloppy, sharp gesture - "happens. Forgot to eat. You got food?" It's not a question inasmuch as it is a demand and/or a plea.

Jeremiah knows the motions of someone who has cleaned their face a lot. Especially of blood but he does not say anything, just watches. Then they gulp down the water and he shakes his head. The detective lieutenant gets up to get another bottle from his trunk and bring it back. There's another small packaged thing in his hand but it is set down. "Take it slow on the next one. If your stomach is empty, the water is going to curb your appetite even more." Which if they have not been eating regularly, that could have already done damage to their metabolism and- He pulls open a packet that has a single cotton ball and offers it out to Alexis. "Take this and this." He picks up the packaged thing which turns out to be a protein bar, this one some kind of oat and honey mix. All part of his take care of witnesses supplies in the trunk. "When did you eat last?" he asks, watching them. Making sure they're not just going to pass out again.

"I know what I'm doin'," Alexis snipes back when he tells them how to drink, but it's meek. There's no bite to it at all. The words are just so regular there's no choice to say anything else. Their hands move with practiced familiarity. The cotton ball -- used as it should be. They take the protein bar slower, carefully, with small bites. The question, though, makes their brows furrow with legitimate questioning. "...two days ago? Not sure. I got distracted." It's not much of an excuse, and it's certainly not intended as one. "Happens."

Jeremiah just gave them a look at the snipe but let it go all the same. No point in arguing or poking at someone who was apparently starving. Then he out and out frowned at the mention of how long since they've eaten. Jeremiah made a split-second decision. "Buckle up," he told them, "I'm putting the first aid kit away and we're going to go get you a meal. I'll spare you the diatribe about how you need to eat more often than every two days. Your body will shut down on you before you know it." That was all that he said before he was doing exactly what he said and putting the kit up in the trunk.

"It happens all the time. Really, 'm fine," Alexis protested, stubbornly refusing to put their hands anywhere near the seatbelt. "I forget! That's it! I don't need you to take pity on me!" There's enough vitriol in those last few words to make something very, very clear -- Alexis Tucker will not be the subject of pity. They will never, voluntarily, be the subject of pity. (It's too bad it's not up to them, then.)

"Good thing it isn't pity," Jeremiah retorted immediately. "However, if you have issues with forgetting, then set yourself an alarm. You're in the thick of things, Tucker, and letting yourself get like this is both foolish and stupid."

" I know what I'm doing," Alexis hissed, "and I'm not doing anythin' I don't want to or can't deal with." With that, they slunk about as far down into the seat as they could go, arms stubbornly crossed in a childish show of defiance. "...I used to have people who checked up on me. That was before I skipped town, so -- none of them know where I am anymore."
