That grilled salmon that Shun had at Darlene's was possibly the best that he's had in quite some time. And such, he wanted to see if he could re-create it. He's made it on his own before, but it wasn't nearly on the same level. Naturally, he didn't ask for a recipe, though. One would think that it was a simple enough dish, but it really came down to the herbs and spices. What they were, how much was used, and how it was applied. He already had a fresh chunk of fish in his basket, along with a lemon, and a few other miscellaneous things. Picking up two bottles of the same sort of thing but different brands, he tilted his head, while trying to compare them. One was cheaper than the other, though they looked more or less the same to him. It didn't even seem to be the case of generic vs name brand.

Nasir was, as usual, doing the weekly shopping. He got it all done at once for the house because he was the one that did most of the cooking. Not that anyone else did not try to help out, they did, he just honestly liked doing it himself. As he turned the corner, heading for spices, he noticed someone looking very serious as they went back and forth between two different brands. He could not help himself, really, so ... "You're better off using neither one of those," he offered. "For that salmon."

Shun almost came to a decision when someone decided to speak up. He turned his gaze up to whoever it was with a furrowed brow. Upon seeing the other man, he was hit with a very vague sense of familiarity. Off the bat, he wasn't entirely certain where he had seen him before. It could have been anywhere in this town. So for now, he brushed aside that feeling. "What? Are you some kind of expert on seasoning fish?" he asked in a fairly deadpan tone. He wasn't typically one who enjoyed unprompted advice, especially from strangers, even if they did seem somewhat familiar to him.

Nasir took a step back, blinking. The smile was still in place but this was just a reminder that not everyone liked overly friendly people. Then again he should have known better because he already knew who Shun was having seen him at Darlene's as well as ... Town gossip. It got around. "Actually, yes." He tilted his head to get a look in the basket and then back at the seasoning in the other man's hands. "... you ate grilled salmon at Darlene's last Saturday, didn't you? I made it."

Shun's head cocked to the side slightly at first. Though, there was soon a faint light of recognition in his eyes as the other man explained himself. Now he knew exactly where he had seen the guy. He had caught glimpses of him at Darlene's, and from what he could tell thus far, he was a damn good chef. "That was you?" he started before glancing down at the contents of his basket, "s**t, that was something."Letting out a sigh, he put both of the bottles back onto the shelf. "I have cooked it before, but not nearly as good as what I had Saturday."

"Yeah, Borr asked me to make it special, so I did." Nasir was smiling, pushing his glasses up with a finger. "I'm glad you enjoyed it." He really meant it. Cooking food for people and having them enjoy it was a thing that brought him ridiculous amounts of joy. "My name is Nasir," he said, "Nasir Vasile." A hand was held out for Shun to shake. "... and if you want, I can at least tell you how I made it?"

The amount of seemingly really nice and chatty people that Shun has run into so far in Ashdown was actually bothering him a little bit. He would almost never have random conversations with strangers back in the city. No, he could go on his days and keep completely to himself when he wasn't working. It seemed like those days were gone. "Shun Kuroda," he replied. There was a small bit of hesitance in his movements, but he did give Nasir a firm but brief shake of the hand. "I suppose that would save me some time," he murmured, "Is there a catch?"

Nasir was odd in a town of friendly, nice, and chatty people because he went beyond that. So beyond that. Still he knew how to watch himself and that had him pulling back and smiling softly. "Why would there be a catch?" he asked, blinking. "You liked it so I can tell you. It may not come out the same in the end, no dish is between cooks." He smiled again. "I'm honestly glad you enjoyed it."

An answer didn't come immediately. There was still a sense of uncertainty within him, despite Nasir's answer. "I suppose it would not hurt to know, in the case."Shun looked over at the wall of spices. "So what would you use, then?"

"I use fresh spices actually ..." Nasir was plucking one of the bottles off of the shelf. "I don't really think there's nothing wrong with using these in a pinch but most of the grocery stores in town have an amazing selection. They've got everything you could need for this over in produce." He smiled briefly and set the bottle back onto the shelf. Just the way it had been before. He was not someone who put something back haphazardly. "I also make my own blends to use but I don't think you'd want to go that far." His basket was being set down onto the ground. Nasir was fishing a pen out of his pocket, flipping his shopping list over and writing out - very neat, tidy handwriting - the spices he used. "Here. This is the list of what I used."

Hm. Well that made sense. Fresh ingredients tended to trump their non-fresh varieties. Shun slowly took the slip of paper that had been handed over, taking a cursory glance at what was written. Writing. One of his greatest enemies. At least Nasir's handwriting was neat. It made things marginally easier for him. But he was too prideful to ask the guy to read each thing out loud for him here. So he just pretended that he had everything down right away, then folded the slip. "Thank you, Nasir. Hopefully I will be able to work together something close to what you had made the other day," he quietly said. "I should probably let you continue on with your own grocery needs."

Shun may or may not have been fortunate that Nasir was someone who believed in follow-up and helping out as much as possible. "I'm sure you can," he said with an easy smile. "Oh, um," there was a brief moment of him biting at his lip, what he wanted to offer conflicting with the fact that people sometimes did not want help ... "Do you know how to pick out fresh herbs? I'm mostly done with my shopping and I need to grab a few things over there anyway. So I can show you if you'd like?"

"Sort of. I can at least tell the difference between parsley and cilantro."He made that mistake once. That made for an interesting meal later on to say in the least. "I should be fine from here. You have done plenty as is."

Nasir nodded his head. "I can only imagine what kind of mistakes can happen if you didn't know the difference." He shifted on his feet a moment, adjusting his basket on his arm. "Alright. Well ... just make sure that you watch for browning leaves and look for the ones with the strongest smell. That's the easiest way to help make sure you pick some of the freshest." With a soft incline of his head. "Nice meeting you, Detective Kuroda. Good luck with your grilled salmon!" If he wondered how he knew he was a detective for any reason ... Well. Shun had been to Darlene's more than once at this point and nothing was secret in a town like Ashdown.

Shun kept those notes in mind. "Of course. And... thank you, again," he murmured before giving pause when the guy had referred to him as Detective. Word really did spread around here. He wasn't sure which made him more unsettled. That, or the seemingly unnatural general friendliness of the town. Shaking his head to himself, he made his way back over the produce section, staring down at his ingredients slip.
