The time Kawah Ijen spent in this land had slowly made her quite fond of it. It was different, the process of finding a true home rather than being a mere part of a herd. Even though she wasn’t actually part of a herd at the moment –didn’t belong to the only thing that had ever seemed like a home to her- she was happy. The freedom to choose her own path was one she couldn’t help but enjoy. True enough, she had spent some time among a herd in this land, though that had been by accident or fate and no true design of her own…

The Padmapani herd had found her in her time of need, collapsed on the outskirts of their territory. Without knowing her at all they had taken her in, had fed her and tended her injuries and let her rest among the peace of their home for as long as she had wished. They had been healers and concerned strangers, but grown to be like family and friends to her. The first such family or even true friends she could ever truly recall having. They did not see her as a foreigner and cast her out, did not lock her away in solitude because she was different. They were far different than she had ever seen! And she had been happy there, of course, surrounded by those that surprisingly seemed to consider her among their friends and equals.

It was different, to be sure. A strange feeling to be surrounded by those that saw her as another Soquili, and not a vessel of the volcanos will. Not an icon, or a goddess or an object; just as Kawah. Their friend, sister, herd mate, and even on occasion lover. She was one of them, part of something, and she carried that feeling with her even as she left the herd behind. It was the most difficult decision she had actually made, but with freedom so freely won it seemed a cheat to stay at the first place she found. Maybe she’d go back, one day… But first she wanted to see the world a bit more, to explore, to make new friend and new alliances and learn more about this new realm of possibility.

“But I will see them again, even if it is only to visit.” She promised to herself as she soared over an ever-changing landscape. The coast and the mountains behind her, she watched forest give away to grasslands and lakes, the blanket below her a riot of color. Soon enough she’d find herself in the mountains again, but for now the lowlands sprawled below her. “In the meantime, maybe I should try to make new friends… Do something, to get a feel for this new place.”

Fayths stick together, her gentler relatives were ever fond of saying. To an extent, the dark mare could see the appeal. Her brother and sire were dear indeed to her, more so with the lack of a mother and the loss of a sister weighing against them. It was a delight to visit with them regularly, to hear the tales of what they had been up to as of late. But Fayths stick together only worked so well, with their more competitive and combative natures.

Keshani Avenara was ever her father's daughter, willful and independent and fearless to her very feather-tips. She loved her father, for he had raised her to be who she was and to unapologetic about it. She loved Avant because he had taken to the lessons so well, but there were times when she wanted to throttle her brother... Especially when he got smug about something, like his latest game of tricking some of the purebred Kalona into thinking he was just like them. His preening had bordered on insufferable, until she'd at last had enough and told him so. Avant had laughed at her and taken it as a sign that he was "winning" their competition, and said nothing more of it since.

Keshani for her part had no fear or regard for the strength of pure kalona, preferring instead to challenge them and best them where she could. There was no desire to approach them gently, they often made no attempt to hide their disdain for her softly feathered wings. So she in turn made no attempt to hide her disdain for their high-headed arrogance, and to beat them at their own games whenever she could. Her territory was unchallenged, by walker or kalona, and she had pets scattered through the land that she called on to amuse herself. But still, she was profoundly unentertained, and longed for a challenge, for a purpose.

She loved her brother and sire, but she could only spend so much time watching them invent their own games. At a certain point, her pride refused to allow Avant to excel while she languished. Instead, she would seek out her own new entertainment, and hopefully find something to show him up with in the process.

So she had taken to wandering, traversing the land in search of new vistas and peoples to interact with. She'd spent little time in the desert, the bright sun disagreeing with her dark coat. But the grasslands had been entertaining, and the mountains continued to be among her favorite. To this end she found herself soaring above them again, searching for a suitable valley to land in and rest for a time.

Walking among snow dusted mountains was a new experience for Kawah Ijen. The island-bred mare had of course seen snow before, albeit at a distance as it crowned one of the mountain peaks, and never so close as this. Still, the white caps were familiar in that she remembered them dusting the dormant volcanos, and had seen them melt away against the fury of a fresh eruption. But here they lived eternally, on some of the highest cliffs, and there was no sign of an active volcano for miles. Whether this was because there was no active fire tribe, or the old gods of the mountains had long ago grown weary of this place and moved southward, she could not guess.

Still, upon finding them sprawled below her hooves she couldn’t fight her inherent curiosity. Reasoning that it was as good a time as any to take a break and find something to eat, she happily spiraled down out of the clouds and landed in a snowy valley. The bite of cold against the sensitive bottom of her hooves made her squeak, dissolving into a soft laugh as she sank in the white fluff. Up to her hocks in chilly white, Kawah folded her wings to her back and pawed at it curiously, grinning as the flakes scattered like a white wave.

“Curious indeed.” She murmured to herself, reflectively mantling her wings when the wind bit into her coat. “Not altogether unpleasant, but not the best surroundings to spend a long time in.”

Wading through the white fluff until she found some sturdier ice-solid ground under her feet, Kawah meandered below the frost-covered trees, and admired the stiff needles of the evergreens around her. Here and there stood a bare trunk, stripped clean of bark and leaves by what she imagined were local deer or perhaps a nearby herd. Then and again she’d see a half-obscured entry to a warren, which she assumed meant the inhabitants had gone elsewhere to spend their winter.

Still, there were solid-packed trails beneath the trees, which told her not everyone had vacated the area. Or if they had, it hadn’t been long gone. The paths were well-maintained beneath what was likely the most recent coating of snow, and there were markers on some of the trees, though she wasn’t quite sure what they meant. Stopping at the next mark, she narrowed her eyes and attempted to decipher the strange character. “I’ve never seen anything like this before, though it makes sense if the inhabitants are remote. Maybe this is indeed herd lands, and they roam widely in the winter to find enough forage? Or perhaps this is a known trade or pilgrimage route.”

Shaking her head, the black made moved onward, ignoring the way her mane hissed and whispered against the cool snow beneath her feet. “With luck, I’ll meet someone I can ask, rather than just wondering about it for the rest of the day…”

"Fayth stick together, and here you are further away from any of your kin than you'd ever been before. It seems like you aren't much good at the family thing, you know..." The dark mare murmured to herself as she flew along, powerful wingbeats carrying her easily through the cold air. "Maybe you're just not built that way, Keshani... Maybe you shouldn't even try. After all, what happens to the innocents around you?"

You fail to save them. You let them get injured and die... She shook her head, sending the amethyst and silver strands of her mane tumbling about her face, only to have them swept back again by the wind. "Enough of that now, it's hardly becoming of a warrior to dwell on such things."

With a tilt of her wings and a curve of her body, Keshani turned herself into a downward spiral, circling over the strange blue-green scatter of evergreen forest curling down the flank of the mountains. The snowcapped peaks gave way to charcoal shoulders that disappeared into the embrace of trees, all of it unfamiliar and therefore intriguing to her.

There was the faint skitter of laugher on the wind that spoke of foals in the area, and she pitched her ears to the sweet sound out of a curious reflex she'd never admit to any who dared ask. Still, there was no one there to observe her at the moment, so she felt little reluctance to act on the curiosity. Swooping lower toward the tower of trees, Kesha narrowed her bright silver eyes in search.

If there were little ones about, this was hardly the place for them to play without adult supervision. All matter of creatures could live in the mountains, among the trees or even swoop down from the sky. Kalona and Walkers and twisted who-knew-whats that wanted to get back at a herd, or feast on the young, or do any number of other terrible things. "Where are you, darlings? And is there someone with you to make sure you're all alright?"

"I wonder if it stays all year round, way up here?" Kawah mused, snuffling at more of the flakes before casting her gaze over the peaks. “That would be, interesting. Not to my taste, but it would be nice to be able to visit snow whenever one fancied to.”

Seeing the upper reaches of the mountains were still packed with snow and nigh inaccessible, Kawah Ijen had been sure to land below the frozen wastes. Still, she couldn't help but glancing up at the passes now and again, admiring the walls of snow and ice strung between the mountains. There was something beautiful about them, something that beckoned her to investigate though she knew it was far too treacherous to chance. Snow was not her element, and she'd need a guide at the very least. Since one was not forthcoming, it seemed that keeping her distance was best.

She soon meandered down through the lower pass and found herself in the shadow of a denser section of forest. Pacing alone through the snow, the phoenix mare began walking parallel to the woods, skirting the tree line as she searched for more of the markers she had found carved along select trees. She had noticed three distinct patterns so far, one of them that she had determined meant shelter. Still, the other two remained unfamiliar to her, but she found herself hopelessly intrigued and moving along in search of more information.

Kawah tilted her head as she saw a shape chase across the snow, indicating something flying high above her head. She didn't see the owner of the shadow, partially obscured by the trees, but the swift progress past made her think it was someone returning to their herd grounds. The flight was straight and smooth, with one discernible pair of wings that alternated between smooth strokes and a straight-winged glide. She couldn’t tell if they were feathered or not, but it mattered little.

The sudden ripple of laughter in the trees made her turn her head, spinning in search of the source. It sounded like foals, two or three distinct little voices calling to each other among the greenery. Perhaps they were playing a game or out on an expedition of a kind. She rather imagined herds had many training games and tasks for their young to complete, lessons that would serve them as they grew up.

“Still, it seems a bit odd to send foals out without some sort of supervision… Perhaps an adult is nearby and watching them? Or maybe they’ve slipped their guardian, and should be herded back home.” With a restless paw of her hooves, Kawah gave into the urge to ensure all was well, and strode into the trees. “I’ll just, see if I can peek in and find them. If they’re alright then that’s wonderful, but if not, I want to see if I can help.”

Maybe it was their kin that had carved the markings into the trees, and she could learn something while she shooed the little ones back where they belonged.
