Mel had been on her way out the door when her mother started yelling at her again. Go find a job, get married to a nice rich boy, blah blah blah. She'd just been going to take the trash out yet every time she walked out the door it was the same old routine. It was a wonder the woman hadn't driven her to bad habits. Growing up she hadn't really thought it'd been like this, but maybe it had been. It was hard to tell when you were young after all. Some things changed, but there were a lot of things that didn't. The house was still the same after all these years. Uncomfortable, full of decorations and random oddities. The usual old housewife feel. Even the neighborhood seemed pretty much the same. Some of the houses had been updated and new families had moved in, but other than that it still had the old suburban feel to it all. Having lived there almost her entire life, she knew the ins and outs of it all fairly well. It was why she'd wanted to get out so bad, yet here she still was in good old Ashdown.

She'd been completely distracted in her own thoughts that she hadn't really even realized she'd tossed the trash and kept walking. That was, until she bumped into a very solid figure. Mel was a small enough girl that the impact knocked her a few feet back, almost like she'd hit a wall. Looking up though, she realized it was just a very solid man instead. One that looked vaguely familiar to her.

"I'm really sorry!"

Rylan had been distracted lately. By the sudden appearance of two men in his life that he'd never counted on having, by all of the weird magicky stuff that had caught him unawares. It left him more prone than usual to getting lost in his own thoughts as he walked.

... Until he practically walked into someone, and then - Oh s**t.

He jolted himself back into the present with a, "No, no, no, my fault entirely." And it took him a second to recognize the girl he'd walked into.

"Mel?" He said. "It's been a while. How, uh. Are you back in Ashdown?"

"Cam? Been a long time. It's good seeing you. You look good." She'd heard he was a firefighter of course, everyone pretty much knew that. Her mother had been gossiping again too so she knew about the captain thing, though of course she wouldn't bring that up. That would just be rude.

"Oh uh yeah. Staying with my parents and such. Trying to find a place and a job." She really didn't have the heart to tell him she wasn't doing well. Though really staying with her parents pretty much gave it away. No, she'd keep her issues to herself and just have a nice friendly chat. Maybe then she could forget about her own problems for a while.

"How about yourself? How you doing?"

He smiled that radiant smile that came so naturally to him, even though at the back of his mind, he wondered if Mel had picked the right time to come back to Ashdown. So much was happening, none of it good, and even if she showed no signs of getting involved, he couldn't help but worry. That was his job, after all, to worry about people and wonder how he would ever keep the city safe when an unknowable threat hung over it like a shroud.

But she didn't need to know that.

"Thanks. You do too. How are the folks?" he heard himself say. "I'm doing well. I'm in a good spot, you know, with the job and everything. Doing something I love, which is about all anyone can ask for, right?"

"Are you looking for anything in particular?"
