The only word for it was tired. No matter what she did, Autumn was tired. No amount of sleep was enough. No amount of relaxation was enough. She forced herself to the salon, smiling pretty where necessary and telling her regulars how happy she was to see them. But it was hollow. Empty. Autumn wondered vaguely if it was as obvious to anyone else as it was to her. Not even the real housewives of wherever tearing each other's hair out could get rid of what she could only describe as a dull ache.

But that wasn't even quite right. An ache implied there was something there. Instead, Autumn was worthless. Directionless. Every attempt at helping people, at making a difference, had turned into someone getting hurt. If not herself, anyway. Zac, Jeremiah... How long had she just been a burden to them? She wasn't some witch or some princess, not really. She was a boring, lonely girl with a boring, lonely life.

So now she was just. Working up the nerve to call back home. To admit to her parents they'd been right, and go crawling back. Teaching wouldn't be so bad. She wouldn't hurt anyone there, ******** anything up like this. This wasn't her battle, not really. No matter what Pax told her, she wasn't anything special.

She couldn't even save Lucas.

So Autumn ignored all the weirdness. Treated Rosalinde as a cat more than a friend, ignored the birds outside, and went to bed as soon as work and errands were done. It gave her no time to think and all the time to sleep.

It worked.

She'd texted people that she just needed some alone time, which... Wasn't entirely untrue. Updated her Twitter with happy statuses, posted makeup on Instagram. It wasn't that Autumn was missing. It was just that she was broken. And she refused to impart that misery onto anyone else in her life again.

Lucas had been right all along.

"You have got to be ******** kidding me."

Lucas was livid. Standing near Autumn's apartment, staring at his best friend like he'd just revealed himself to be the grand master of his entire time in Ashdown, he was very nearly shaking with anger. "Your girlfriend is PRINCESS?"

Deacon, for all his calm mannerisms and affable nature, looked as shocked as Lucas was mad. "You never said her name was Autumn, you just called her Princess. How was I supposed to know?"

"By saying her name!" the darker-skinned man hissed in return. "She's my friend and you're my best friend and yet somehow, ********, both of you neglect to tell me you're dating?"

"Why are you so angry?" the blond countered, expression darkening in warning of imminent shutdown.

Staring at Deacon - Avery, as he called him - Lucas felt his hand flexing, his prosthetic following suit. He knew damn well he couldn't keep needling at the man, least of all over who he chose to date, but...but this was his Princess. This was Autumn! And -- and it was his best friend, and yet -- and yet --

Here he was, in the dark. Again. It was becoming a familiar and bitter place.

There was a long strain of silence. Deacon worked his jaw to try and loosen his tension, finally saying softly, "Luca."

Lucas didn't turn, but his eyes flickered towards the man.

"It's important to me you're okay with this." His blue eyes, usually calm and clear, were troubled. "She's going through a lot of s**t and -- "

"I know that!"

" -- she needs the support and not your sass." Deacon finished with his eyes slightly narrowed, Lucas making a faint sound in his throat in response. "So just suck it up and don't upset her crows."

Pale eyes flickered towards Deacon. "Her what?"

"You don't know -- ?" The taller man sighed softly. "You need to learn to communicate better."

"Understatement of the year," Lucas grumbled, looking moodily towards their destination.

The murder, it seemed, was well aware of the approach of the two men. On the stairs and the entryway leading up to Autumn's apartment were crows. Tons and tons of crows, with a magpie or two mixed in. They were cawing at each other, some kind of conversation going on amongst them. And the porch, it seemed, was filthy.

Closer inspection revealed it wasn't actually filthy, at all. Rather, it was littered with beads, toys, all sorts of strange things, stacked in what seemed as some kind of offering. When the men approached, the birds turned to them. Staring. Unblinking.

One particular bird did not have enough with simply staring. It took off from its position on the porch, fluttering over to Deacon and landing on his shoulder. It clucked affectionately, butting its head up against Deacon's neck. Its chirps were affectionate, probably trying to convey something, and it turned its attention to stare at the front door.

Begging them to go knock.

"Jesus." Lucas barely breathed the word, and Deacon nodded.

"Don't be alarmed," he advised, glancing over as Lucas' eyes widened considerably, looking back in time to see a large crow coming right for them. It landed neatly on his shoulder - giving him an enormous sense of shock, and then peace. What had Autumn called this one...? "Russell." He smiled as Lucas looked horrified, the bird so familiar with the blond.

"This is it. I'm going mad. This is what it feels like," Lucas muttered.

The blond rolled his eyes but let it be, looking to the large bird and lifting his hand to slowly, gently, rub the feathers at the base of his beak. "Don't worry buddy, I'll bring in all your gifts and tell her you guys miss her."

The swears that fell from Lucas' lips were not in English. He grumbled and growled and picked his way around the murder, agitation flaring. Birds moving in on his friends. At the door, he cast a dimly annoyed look towards Deacon before knocking, crossing his arms and behaving. No more breaking in. Not yet anyway.

Deacon, for his part, was content with Russell, watching the other birds calmly. They were all a part of Autumn's joy, and as such, he counted himself quite lucky to be considered trust worthy.

The door opened slowly, talking already starting as it creaked open.

"Look, Mrs. Johnson, I told you I don't know how to get them to be quiet, it's j--" Autumn stopped, blinking. She blinked again. The look on her face was that of pure confusion as she stared between the two men, trying to figure it out. How...?

"How did you get Deacon out here?" She asked Lucas, clearly confused. "But... I'm. I'm glad you're here. I'm sorry for everything," Autumn offered sadly. In her memories, she could still see Lucas's pain. Could still hear Pax telling her that he was within the enemy's cycles, would not be free until he was. That she could not save him.

"I thought... I really, genuinely thought I could save you. And I would've done whatever it takes." She gushed it all out, forcing herself. Making herself reach out before she shut down, again. "I can't... I can't change your mind. I can't save you. But I'm going to do whatever I can to protect you, where I can. I'm so sorry I ******** up. I shouldn't have tried to change your mind, or act like a hero. I just... even if you choose life, choose HIS path, I'll fight for you. 'Cause you're still my friend, even. Even if you don't see me as yours. Even if I keep ******** up royally when I try to help."

Then, she turned to Deacon with a sad smile.

"I"m sorry I didn't see you, babe. It's. I've been in a rough place. I wasn't sure how to uh, how to tell you. That. My really good buddy, who APPARENTLY FOUND YOU," a little bit of confused frustration there, but whatever. Bigger fish to fry. "...I think we're on opposite sides of this, cause he's a werewolf and aligned with. ...The thing." She sighed.

"I think you two should come in. Let me make it up to you with tea or something, for ruining your lives."

Opening his mouth to explain, he was immediately cut off, and -- and Autumn spilled everything. Terror dawned on Lucas' face as he realized Autumn also didn't know they were friends -- and proceeded to tell Deacon everything.

Everything he hadn't told his best friend.

"You're a what?" Deacon asked sharply, looking at his friend darkly.

"Princess," he growled softly, "this is my best friend, Avery, as in Deacon Avery Steele. Avery, this is my best friend on this coast, Autumn Smith, a-kay-a Princess. <********>" Lucas covered his face with one hand and went inside, not addressing anything else that had been said. He didn't know how to. The pressure of it all was too much -- and his agitation was only making it worse.

"We are not done, Luca." Deacon turned his attention to Autumn, apologetic. "I'm sorry, I never said who I was here for, did I?" Leaning in - careful not to dislodge Russell - he kissed her sweetly. "And don't apologize, you don't owe me anything. I'm not going to begrudge you your space. But this guy," he hooked his thumb at the large crow, "might have a bone to pick." Gently rubbing the crow's beak again, he apologized, "I have to go in buddy. She'll see you again soon."

From inside, Lucas watched through one of the windows, his expression bordering on hurt. He swept it up and away, a soldier's neutrality in its place; there was nothing to be done for it.

She listened, and sweet ******** jesus, they were friends. The hot guy Lucas had casually mentioned that she'd probably hit off with him... and, well. Autumn certainly had. Really well. Swallowing thickly, she watched them both come into her house- and s**t, when had Deacon buddied up with Russell? Well, that was good. Her leading bird and her leading bae were getting along. Only now, her leading wolf was having issues. And that one was her fault, again.

Autumn turned and headed after them, following to the window. She sat on the arm of a nearby chair, looking at Lucas.

"Well. Honestly, someday, we're going to look back on all of this and laugh. I had no idea that you," she pointed to Lucas, "Were the friend Deacon- Avery, apparently- came here for. But I'll just say I'm ******** happy you have so many people who care about you," she admitted. And it was so, so true. Lucas had a great support network. Rylan, Thorne... and Deacon, too. s**t. It was a perfect triumvirate. A super ******** hot triumvirate. Autumn was gonna have to work her way into watching that man party go down. Hopefully with pudding.

"And that you," she pointed to Deacon, "were the hot friend Lucas said I'd hit it off with. And he was right!" She offered a weak smile.

"But seriously. What's the worst thing happening here? That you two forgot to tell each other some s**t?" Autumn cocked her head to the side. "Cause, I love you two, I do. Both of you for different reasons. But I would rather have a friend not tell me some s**t than accidentally nearly kill a friend trying to save him. Or break into a man's mind and see his fears and childhood laid bare. Not to play the victim card. But seriously." Autumn folded her arms.

"I ******** up. You ******** up. Deacon ******** up." Probably not, but whatever. She was trying to cheer a friend up here. "I mean, I ******** up HELLA bad. But we're all gonna really get ******** up in this s**t if we don't all look out for each other."

Deacon followed Autumn in, sitting down carefully within perimeter of the two of them. Blue eyes glanced to her with concern - he wanted to take her hand - but he wasn't going to undermine what was going on here. Especially given that she'd just revealed what Lucas, the man he'd walked through hell with, wouldn't share.

For his part, Lucas was struggling to not just shut down. Like Deacon, he had his own means of dealing when things got to be Too Much, but he knew he could handle this. He just didn't want to. A glance was spared to Autumn but little more, mostly staring at the floor as if it held some great secret to solve the entire conundrum. "He's not a part of it," was all he finally managed to say, completely glossing over the parts about himself. "I have fought to keep people out of this s**t and it doesn't seem to matter. Aren't you afraid he's," his chin lifted towards Deacon, "next?"

Pale eyes finally turned upwards, his gaze heavy. "I don't want to see either of you in this position, but here we are. He doesn't need to know anymore than is necessary, it isn't going -- "

"I'm not a child, Luca, stop it," Deacon cut him off tersely, earning a sharp glance. "Autumn let me in to her life and there are things you just can't deny - and you, apparently, are going to have to come face to face with it sooner than later."

Lucas gave him a baffled look. "The hell does that mean?"

Taking a deep breath, Deacon let it out slowly, looking between his best friend and his lady. "It means she has things in this world that show her as special. That she's been touched by the other one." His gaze hardened. "You know there's a high chance you're going to experience something, too. But you have people around you." He paused, suddenly looking for clarification. "Wait, are they involved -- ?"

"DON'T--" Lucas drew in a sharp breath through his teeth, hands out, and let it out with the faintest growl. "Don't bring them up. Don't talk about them. Don't even say their names." It wasn't so much a request as it was a demand. There was a possession in his words, an insistence of boundaries put in place.

"If you put it out there, this place will swallow it up, and if it touches Nico - " Lucas looked at Autumn, murmuring his aside as if to undo the situation he was in currently, " - my brother, by the way, they came together - it can't touch him. I'm going to send him away because you're accepting the responsibility of being here," Lucas' eyes turned to Deacon, "but not him."

The blond frowned, rubbing his palms together slowly. "He's been busy with that friend of yours. He's computer savvy but I don't think he suspects anything."

"And we'll keep it that way." The words came between Lucas' teeth like a threat. He had to visibly breathe, in - hold - out, and click his jaw before his expression resembled more himself. "We just came to make sure you weren't going to stay locked in your room." His pale eyes rest upon Autumn's face, but he was guarded. "You can't save me, Deacon knowing s**t wont change anything, we're good then?"

"...Considering how angry you are right now," Autumn said sadly, her eyes easily catching the tense and angry body language, "I don't think we are." She looked away, because she couldn't look at him. Couldn't see him like this. She really had ******** it all up, hadn't she?

"Look. I know you hate me. I know I hurt you, a lot. I dragged you into this mess, kicking and screaming. But Deacon... hasn't done a thing wrong. You know what he told me, when we met?" She thought back, not even able to smile about their wonderful first date. The meeting, the dinner. The afterwards. How it'd all been so perfect, like she was living a dream. And now... it wasn't. Reality came crashing back in.

"He came here for you. Not to meet me, not for whatever the ******** is going on. People... people love you, Lucas. I love you. If getting me out of your life is what you need, I'll do it. There's enough people who love you and want you to happy that... I can accept you not wanting me around." She was good at disappearing. It was kind of a talent of hers.

"All I do is ********. I know that. s**t, I don't want me around. I won't lock myself in here," she did look back, tears in her eyes.

"But you don't have to lock yourself in here with me to make sure I'm okay. You deserve happiness, Lucas. I'm not going to stand in the way of that anymore."

Deacon immediately started to reach for Autumn, but paused when he saw a flicker of movement from Lucas. He frowned, watching his friend, but knowing they had to have a moment. He was just a silent witness to it.

Lucas shifted his feet, inching forward on his seat, agitated. But he was looking at her, at Autumn, and listening, and -- no. No no no no no! "No, no, Princess, no, this isn't -- "

If ever there were poster children for Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, it was them.

He pushed himself over to her, sat next to her and wrapped both arms around her shoulders, drawing her in for as close of a sideways embrace as he could manage. "Princess, I -- look. It's not you, it was never you." Lucas tried to make sense, but it was hard, everything jumbled and fractured in his thoughts. "I don't hate you, I friggin' love you enough I'd put a bullet in my brain before I'd ever risk even a fraction of your happiness," he pressed a kiss to her brow, "especially with my best bud. My problem is -- it's me."

This was harder. His throat felt too tight, his jaw ticking to find the words. "I'm a cancer to you and everything you believe in," he finally said, slowly and deliberately, words edged in a deep seeded sadness he hadn't been able to express. "You're fighting for what you know to be right and I'm the brakes. I'm -- I'm supposedly just a tool for that a*****e. Do you know how that feels? To find this beautiful, funny, talented, scary woman and know that for reasons beyond me, I can't be on her side?"

His voice cracked a little, and it was there that his fear with Autumn lay bare. "I want you around. I want to bring you flowers and spoil Rosalinde and talk to you about all this and take pictures of you two being disgustingly cute together, but I don't..." Lucas lost his words for a moment, continuing softly, "I don't know that I should. I don't...think it's a good idea."

There was a few heartbeats of silence before Deacon spoke up, just as soft. "It's not for you to decide." His voice was touched with a bit of sadness, as if he had a mind what Autumn's answer was going to be. He'd already had this discussion with her. "You both take a risk, apart, or together."

For all of her protests, for all of her willingness to say she would walk away, Autumn immediately melted into the hug. She hated it, honestly. How much she'd cried lately. How much she'd broken, despite promising herself never to be so low again. But, she thought. But maybe she was growing. Maybe you had to hurt so bad to make yourself stronger.

If that were the case, she had better turn out to be superman after this s**t.

"I don't care," she argued, holding him like he was an oasis after being in the desert for three days. "I don't ******** care that you're for him, or you're with him, or whatever. And I don't ******** care what Pax says. If I'm in this- if what I'm fighting for is going to make things better- it's going to be better for all of us. INCLUDING you."

"Do you know what's a bad idea, Lucas? Going into an abandoned hospital alone. Standing up to a man made of fire who has you caged. Eating a ******** spider at the behest of another spider--" she paused, turned to Deacon.

"Don't ask."

"but the point," she continued, throat raw from trying to hold back tears. "The point that everything I do in this goddamn town is one bad decision after the other. And if I'm making my own bad decisions," Autumn broke.

"I want you to be the best bad decision I've ever made. Maybe my salves can't save you, so ******** what. I have my fists and my feet and my heart, and there's no magic there. I ate a ******** spider, Lucas. I ate a goddamn ******** spider of my own free will. Keep that in mind and tell me I'm not batshit crazy enough to make this work."

She sniffed.

"And Rosalinde is a slut for you. You can't leave her, it'll kill her. If not for me, then for my cat."

Autumn looked over to Deacon again at the discussion of taking a risk, and nodded. God bless him. God bless this angel of a man who had happened into her life. She was going to make it up to him, somehow. For staying with her. For showing her a man could be good, again.

"He's right. And if I'm risking it all anyway, I want to risk it with you. Enemies or not."
PostPosted: Fri May 13, 2016 11:55 am

"Princess," he started, trying to gently protest, but she was opening the flood gates and would steamroll him if she didn't get it out. So Lucas let his Princess say what she needed to say, not letting her go, not loosening his hold at all. He watched her with his sad pale eyes, tried to choke back at laugh at the spider comment (and failed), bowing his head to kiss the tears on her lashes before they could fall.

Lucas could only marvel at her strength and determination. He hoped it would be enough, for both of them. "Rosalinde may like me less once I have a lot more fur and teeth," he replied, tried to joke, but the reality of it made his voice tight and raw. "And I don't want you to risk it, Autumn, that's -- that's why we're on opposing sides. I would gladly die if no one else had to. Gladly. Knowing that you and boat-boy here could have a future? I could go, knowing that. The possibility of happiness is something that I want you both to have. More than anything, I don't want anyone to die for this war of faeries and gardeners and s**t we didn't sign up for."

And that was their divide. Lucas wanted them happy. Autumn wanted them free. Unfortunately, Autumn could only get what she wanted...if Lucas' side won. He was bound to the Enemy, for better or for worse, it seemed. "I don't -- I don't know that there's any real 'winners' here," he said at last, trying to put his thoughts into words. "I'd never hurt you. Not ever. Please know that."

"She knows," Deacon said quietly, having shifted closer to them. He put his arm around the two of them, his other hand resting on Autumn's elbow. "I don't know the half of what is going on since you wont tell me," he shot Lucas a look, the likes of which made the other look away almost sheepishly, "but it's not something either of you can change. The best you can do is try to make it work for you instead of whatever 'sides' there are." The blond was a bit lost, but he had his opinions and was not above sharing them, especially if his best friend was being an assmonkey to his lady.

"Autumn has done this longer than you, she probably knows better than anyone what the risks are. You - neither of you can resign to being a pawn in someone else's game." His voice was soft, low, but serious. "I know the place scares the both of you, it scares me, but there's got to be a way for you both to win. Life isn't that black and white, and Big Bad Wolf here should know that best -- "

"You're an a*****e," Lucas informed Deacon snidely, hugging Autumn closer still. "You don't deserve my Princess." Snorting softly, he returned his eyes to the lady in question, his expression softening again. "I don't know what's going to happen on the full moon, but...don't go in, if you can help it. Just don't go. I can't hurt anyone if there's no one to hurt."

The blond gently rubbed Autumn's arm, glancing between them, letting them figure it out as they needed.

"That's what ******** sucks about this, Lucas. That whole please don't go in there thing? It's not really a choice." It had been, the last times, when it had been her will to do so. But the first time, as it had done to Lucas and Thorne and Rylan now, it had caught Autumn entirely by surprise. She remembered, with some sick amusement, how her first visit a severed foot had upset her. Now she was making potions and dealing with mind-killing people. How the times had changed. Would she look back on this, too, as an easier time?

The thought made her stomach turn.

"My first time, I was going to get bath bombs. I'd ordered them from Lush, stepped outside, and the whole world was ******** crazy. I think... you don't always have to try to go there, to get there. Sometimes it just grabs you unwillingly." Autumn frowned severely.

"And if this s**t is going to be as bad as my gut's saying it is, we'll probably wind up there whether we like it or not. Which is WHY I want us all to be ready. You won't hurt me. I won't hurt you. But honestly? I'm really ******** scared we won't get a choice. Like with the mansion."

When Deacon rubbed her arm and stuck up for her, Autumn leaned against him contentedly. It wasn't perfect, by any means. There was still a lot of hurt and anger in the air, but at the very least, it was dissipating. Getting easier to swallow every passing minute. And she was seriously so ******** lucky she had Deacon, strong-willed and immovable, in the face of all of this s**t. She would probably be a lot more carefree in her state of living if he wasn't there to come back to.

"If. If for some reason, you get hurt in this, come back to me when it's over. I can heal you," Autumn said, and it wasn't so much of a question as the b*****d child of begging and demanding. "Not... not missing arms or anything, if Other Ashdown sees it fit to take your good arm, but. Blood loss, cuts. Concussions. Fairly moderate stuff, I can- get rid of for you. Just let me do that, if it comes to it."

"I know," he replied miserably, "but I've also seen you find a way in. All I'm asking is -- is don't do it on purpose. Please." Lucas gave her as serious of a look as he could muster, which wasn't very convincing when he looked so sad. "I'm a ********' -- a were, Autumn, and if any lore in the world is true, I'm not going to have control. I wont even look like me, if I had to place a bet. The Otherworld will twist me, I'm sure."

His voice was quieter as he continued until he fell silent, expression reserved. Lucas nodded in mute acknowledgment of Autumn's words.

Glancing between them, Deacon mostly retained his neutral expression, though a faint frown dimpled his cheek. "There's nothing anyone can do?" he asked, brows knit in concern. "You can't -- take him across in a place he'll be contained but safe? There has to be a better option than just letting random happenstance take the wheel."

"The best happenstances we can plan for are learning a ******** of magic and self-defense. I've put out the word that s**t's going down to everyone I know-" She shot Lucas an apologetic glance.

"Only the chief got names, among the people who don't know you. Everyone else... well. You got yourself a bit of a reputation." And Autumn couldn't help but smile, just a little bit. All of the people she'd met to date who knew Lucas adored him. It was hard not to- he was a ******** lovable idiot. War vet, buff stud, heart of gold. It was an adorable picture.

"Other Ashdown is unpredictable. A hospital is a sanctuary, a forest is hell. You never know what to expect. I won't... go looking for trouble, mister steed," Autumn offered, "But I can't promise it won't come finding me."
