Ragnarök's head ached. He thought he could hear someone speaking, but the words certainly didn't make any sense -- each sound causing his head to throb painfully. Smacking his lips, he blinked his eyes open blearily. The color purple filled his vision, which was odd. A few of his companions certainly had purple in their manes, but never so much of it. And the owner of said purple seemed rather... small? He shook his head, immediately regretting the action when it caused a sharp pain in his temples, eyes squeezed shut as he waited for the pain to die down again. When he opened his eyes, the world seemed to come back into focus and his gaze fell on the smallest soquili he'd ever seen standing over him where he lay. He struggled to get back onto his hooves, leathery wings flapping wildly to try and keep his balance. "Who-- what--" he stuttered, at a loss for words, trying to make sense of what had happened before he woke up.

"Whoa, whoa, easy!" Nova's wings flared out in front of her in an attempt to help the stallion in his efforts, gently guiding him until she was sure he wouldn't fall down again. "Be careful. You hit your head pretty hard, but it doesn't look like something fatal. I can't really know for sure without a unicorn's help though." She eyed the soquili warily, not certain how strong the kalona blood was in this stallion. "Do you remember anything? Your name, maybe? How you hit your head on that rock?" She gestured with one wing towards stone, covered in a smattering of blood.

Now Ragnarök was convinced he was dreaming. A tiny soquili with six wings? He knew of the angeni, of course, but all the stories said they had only four. He'd certainly never met one that had more than that. He glanced at the rock the mare gestured to, wrinkling his nose up at the sight of his blood. He'd fully intended to answer her question, but when he opened his mouth the first thing that came out was, "what are you?" He at least had the good grace to look abashed; it was, admittedly, kind of a rude question to ask. Especially to someone who had apparently tended to his injuries and kept watch over him while he was out. "Sorry. I just mean -- well -- you're kind of... small. And you have too many wings for an angeni. I think."

Narrowing her eyes, Nova waited patiently as the stallion apologized for his bluntness and tried to explain himself. Sure, she knew her wings were uncommon enough -- but hadn't the stallion ever seen her kind before? "You're not from around here, are you?" She watched him carefully, and when he shook his head in confirmation she nodded. "I'm an usdia. A soquili, like you. These," she said, spreading out her wings a little, "are... uncommon, especially for my kind. Usually, we only get wings on our head and tail, and they're rather small. Not suitable for flying. Are there really no usdia where you come from?"

Usdia. Ragnarök frowned. The word sounded familiar, but no -- if there had been any of these small soquili in his lands, then he'd have known exactly what she meant. Wings on their tails? That just sounded silly. "No. I think I've heard of usdia before, but no, there are none where I come from." He couldn't help staring, fascinated by this new creature before him. He thought, maybe, that he'd learned about usdia in his studies back at home, but the details were glazed over. There weren't any around, so why learn about them? He lifted his head and looked around, realizing suddenly that he was alone. "Was there anyone else here? I came here with some friends. We were caught off guard, attacked..." They wouldn't have just left him, would they?
No. They were loyal.
So what happened?

Nova wanted to ask a thousand questions about this stallion's homeland. What was it like? Why did he leave? Were there types of soquili there that didn't exist in Kawani? She had seen much of the world in her travels, but never a place that was devoid of usdia. Her curiosity was quickly dampened as the stallion began to explain that he'd been attacked -- and he hadn't been here alone. Her heart went out to him. "No," she replied in a soft, careful tone. "I'm afraid you were the only one here when I found you. It's possible they were run off. Did you get a look at what attacked you? Or -- maybe how long you've been out? It's possible they haven't gone far." There was blood on the ground elsewhere. Nova had assumed it belonged to the stallion, but now she wasn't so sure. Still, there was no sign of the bodies, and no obvious traces of bodies being dragged away -- there was still hope. There was only evidence of injuries, not of death.

Memories of the attack flashed through Ragnarök's head, and he squeezed his eyes shut to try and focus on them. "They had paws. Sharp teeth. There were familiars, too... no -- they were the familiars." His blood suddenly ran cold as he realized what they had been and what that probably meant for the fate of his friends. "Skinwalkers. Three -- maybe four? I've never seen skinwalkers work that well together before. At least, where I come from, they usually work on their own." Maybe the skinwalkers here were different. After all, there were already creatures here he'd never seen before -- so it was possible these monsters were different here, too. He couldn't let himself lose hope. His friends were well trained warriors, and they've all tangled with skinwalkers and lived to tell the tale before.
