Lily's in-class finals were over and done with, but still there were dark projects looming over her head--papers. In many ways, they were worse than exams, because no matter how little you prepared, there was still only two hours of suffering to be had and then it was over. But no, this Greek Lit paper had been antagonizing Lily for weeks, and even after her third pained reading of Antigone she still had no clue as to what she was going to write two thousand words on.

It wouldn't have been much of an issue, except her paper was due in 60 hours and the only thing she could focus on was trying to find a rooftop to practice vinyasas on. She wasn't too proud to admit she was procrastinating, but her degree was at stake. Lily was in dire need of assistance, and fast.

It had been months since she'd actually visited the library, and so she stood awkwardly in the tutor's corner with a sour expression, a copy of her book in hand. Many of the tables looked full already, the teachers just as haggard-looking as their panicked students, and Lily let out a huff, biting her lip. Of course everyone would be trying to get some last minute tutoring in--it was final's week.

Fidgeting with the bookbag strap on her shoulder, the lanky co-ed slowly paced around the room, searching for an empty chair or a set of eyes to meet. Maybe this had been a poor idea after all.

I hope this is okay? Let me know if it needs changing!

She did at least meet a pair of eyes, How she might have missed him before might seem odd, but now it seemed he was looking to very quietly catch her attention, setting aside his own book and tipping his head. He was there to tutor after all. Playing the ‘don’t notice me’ card, though surprisingly effective was still, he had to admit, kind of being an a*****e when you were supposed to be tutoring people who wanted help.

“Hey…” they Greeted. A small wave of greeting. “It’s open over here if you need t a tutor.”

Oh thank God.

He'd been easy to miss in the sea of people, but once Lily made eye contact she breathed a sigh of relief, crossing the rows of people to sit at his desk. It seemed strange that she would have missed this area, coming through the way she had, but she shrugged it off as mounting stress from finals week. What mattered was that he was here and available.

"Sweet," she murmured quietly, unfurling her backpack from her spindly shoulders as she sat down. "Do you know anything about Greek Lit? Because this class is killing me." As pale as she looked in the blue-toned light of the library, it might not have even been metaphorical.

He had to stifle a small laugh at the ironic statement. “Well… it’s pretty good at killing most of its characters, But… let’s see if we can make sure you survive the narrative. “What book are you working with? And whats the assignment?”

He tipped his head trying to make himself look inviting. Just because he wanted to smack SOME of the people he tutored with a book because they thought that Totors should write the paper or read the assignment -for- you didn’t mean that this person was the same way.

"We had to do a paper on Sophocles and his works," Lily muttered, sliding her thin book across the table. "I picked Antigone because I thought, 'hey, this is a book about a girl against the establishment, I can relate'."

When she looked to him, there was a tinge of genuine and tired horror in her hazel eyes specific to finals-induced dread. "I was wrong. I do not relate. But her mom and dad do--they're related, I mean. Is that a thing in Greece?" She winced, but realized she was getting off-topic, and so took a moment to compose herself by pulling out what little notes she had, about a page and a half scribbled in chicken scratch.

"But I have to write a critical essay about this play, and I don't know what to write about except how incredibly ******** up it is." She put two fingers to her temple, leaning in with a sigh. "Is that even a viable thesis?"

“Well, you’re not wrrrrong.” He said thoughtful.
“… you could use that you know… yes you’re reading through a book that wasn’t written today but, imagine comparing it to modern establishment? Define what has and hasn’t changed and how the story is still relevant. I mean… yeah were not going to forbid burying your dead brother but…what could you relate that to… how do you feel about that approach? Which teacher do you have? One of them is more amenable to that than the other.”

"But how would you even compare that to today?" Lily frowned, putting her hand on the book. "I've never heard of anything like this outside of an episode of Jerry Springer. This is some new level of petty. Or old level of petty, I guess. Revived level?" She shrugged--the metaphor was a poor one.

"I've got Robbins," Lily sighed, thinking back on the stuffy classroom and the dim lighting that she'd endured for an entire semester. "He might go for it? I don't know. He's got a pretty cut and dry view of the classics."

“Well… think about it, men in authority trying to prevent someone from doing something with … a body, and then punishing her for doing the thing anyhow as though she did something wrong.” Even if you don’t choose that exact comparison you could still probably find some aspect about it that just intrigued you to draw parallels to? Kind of…history and literature repeats itself kind of thing?” I mean there's a lot more, that's just sort of squishing one modern comparison in."

He was leading her to something, but she wasn't quite sure what just yet. "Yeah, but what's the point in even making that comparison? That's how it's always been, men with no idea what they're talking about trying to regulate other people's bodies." There was a dry venom in her voice, but when she looked back to Zac, her shoulders shrunk as she looked to the side. "I mean, no offense."

Something struck her, and she rubbed her chin with a thoughtful pout. "But what if...that was the point?" She looked back to Zac, lifting her chin from her hand. "Is that the point?"

Zac - grinned-… “yyyeeep” He gave her a thumbs up. “…also… yeah, don’t worry. I’m not especially attached to being called male, I just um…yeah awkward conversation for tutoring time.” He said and then thumped his head on the desk at his near run off at the mouth.

“Sorry…but yes, if he loves classical literature its a good way to sort of smack that home.”

Lily had only the basic internet understanding of gender identity, but she at least knew what it meant to overstep her bounds, and what had been a sheepish glance away turned into a wide-eyed stare, putting a hand on one cheek to hide the way she paled.

"Oh s**t, I'm sorry dude--s**t, um..." The next two words to come to mind were 'man' and 'bro', neither of which were gender neutral. "Uhhhhh, acquaintance of academic means?" She was fishing, but at least it was an effort made, and that counted, right?

"Or, umm...do you have a preference? I'm sorry, I'm super out of date." He...they...? had been so helpful already, the last thing she wanted to do was make them uncomfortable in their own tutoring session.

He had to give a soft laugh. “Dude is fine… I’m used to it, I really don’t mind, I feel like I should sometimes but, I don’t…I guess Im…lucky?” He shrugged, unsure if the term applied. “Or just… maybe too lazy about it. So yeah, no worries.”

He tapped the book We’re here for your assignment first though, let’s make sure you get a good grade first alright?” He grinned though his cheeks were hot because he truly didn’t talk about this often. Perhaps he should but…he always felt like there were people who expressed it all…better.

"Okay..." she responded, glancing down at the book. "If you're sure."

If he was ready to drop the subject, then she was more than happy to oblige. "So Antigone is actually a metaphor for...bodily autonomy? Or, umm...what happens when the establishment forces their beliefs on an unwilling participant?" She could see an outline, vaguely, but it all seemed so tenuous--is this really how papers were written?

"I don't think...we can say if it was intended that way -directly- or not. But the parallels can be drawn to make what seems like a dated antidote, or an incomprehensible piece of literature much more..accessible. That's why literature lasts, people find something of themselves in it, sometimes beyond what the creator understood."

He hesitated and rubbed the back of his neck.

"I mean most people would just... write on what they saw in the play directly, the, power of a woman, the punishment for her actions against the authority, common man rising and things like that... but..." He rolled one shoulder in something like a shrug.
