Planking
America was the dock. She was salt soaked wood below and sun soaked wood above in an orderly march of planks that were thankfully not as splintery as they looked. She was, to an observer, sunbathing. In America's heart, though, she was the dock and that was Nice.
The first day of work had left America still feeling restless and energized, so instead of making the trek home, she'd taken a turn toward the beach instead. It'd been a really a nice sorta first day and she'd missed being around and interacting with lots of people. It'd been fun and she wanted to share that with someone.
"...and I'm even gonna get fed extras by Nasir. Isn't he cute as ********? I want to pat his curly head every time I see it." The list of good things about Darlene's had been expansive, detailing things Sunny likely already knew, but it was a list of appreciation rather than edification anyway.
"Have those two old geezers at the end of the bar really been around forever? Are they magic-magic or is it just the kind of magic of old people with a Habit?"

"I like Nasir," Sunny agreed, dangling her feet over the water. "He brings me soda sometimes." He also gave her hugs. A good kid. All of them were good. "I don't think they're magic, I just think they're old. Borr's like that. I like him, too. I liked his wife a whole lot. Darlene was always really kind to me." She hadn't even realized Darlene was dead when she'd stopped coming around. Sometimes people just forgot about Sunny when things got busy; that was normal, and expected.
She considered sliding off the dock into the water, but her boots were beat up enough without taking another saltwater bath.
"You should come down for a bonfire sometime," she said. "The driftwood burns in pretty colors and I tell fortunes from the smoke."

"Old people got their own bit of special. Guess they gotta to keep on persistin' even when things start wearin' down."
America considered old age and how Sunny was old but she didn't seem the scary sort, the body and mind are betraying you sort. She thought about it, listening to the soft slap of the waves below them, the world went long and a little dark and she caught a glimpse of the back of Sunny's legs from a distance. From beneath the dock, they were two slowly dancing silhouettes full of color, thin against the fading day and then there was something in the sand, blowing past and blocking the view and then she was sitting up.
"We could roast marshmallows...that wouldn't ruin the fortunes would it?"

"Probly not," said Sunny. "Haven't ever tried that. The witchy ones from Salem take me really seriously. Sometimes they throw herbs on the fire and then it smells like, awful." She smiled at America, the corners of her violet eyes crinkling. "Sage and burnt offerings... that's the way to go."

Paintings
Sunny meets America at the doorway and shows her up past the velvet rope declaring the second story off limits. They go up to the attic, to Sunny's cozy fabric-draped space, and Sunny shows America the painting she found: a redheaded girl with a face like a break, legs spread wide, leaning against a lacrosse stick and watching something far off.
"Guess he liked your ma," says Sunny. "I never thought to look before."

Remembering past conversations, America squinted up toward the sky, "Is patchouli really a witchy thing?" She'd always thought it was a pothead thing. She paused a moment, and then added, "Does that mean I can burn you a present, or is it tidier to just use gift wrap?"
