Melancholies

Springtime Teenager

Lately, he'd been having these weird thoughts. Tonight didn't seem so unusual, though. Then again, no day really did.

The same monotony of Ashdown was beginning to blur together for Shiloh Beaumont. He'd wake up, go to school (sometimes not even that much), wander around till it was dark, and keep wandering until it was late and he could sneak back home. Sometimes he'd stop by the store, get some candy or something to drink. Sometimes he'd stop by the park and draw, or wherever seemed convenient. Sometimes he'd just wander like this, music buzzing in his ears from his crappy old first generation iPod.

Sometimes, he just simply had more damn clarity. For the past week, even the simple things felt like an absolute struggle.

Incidentally, this adventure was towards the end of his nighttime voyage. As much as he was putting it off, his tired feet were finally dragging him towards home and towards his bed. It would still be a ten minute walk at best, longer at the rate he was going, but nothing he couldn't handle.

Bored.

BORED.

He could not find his usual favorite non-player character which meant he was bored. Which meant Gloom was wondering his way through the streets and he was kind of aimless and OWOWOWOW THAT WAS A CHARACTER STEPPING ON HIS TAIL.

SCREEEEEEEEEEEEECH.

    Crunch

Shiloh didn't really hear it, but he sure felt the sensation of something under his foot, and then not a second later did he hear the high pitched shriek of ******** something breaking through his music. If he could have sprung fifty feet into the air, he probably would have. Instead, he was just wildly flailing backwards from the shock, landing ever so serenely on his a**.

It was all very ungraceful. Not that Shiloh was ever especially graceful, but he was at least a little more agile than this.

But if anything would come as a shock, it wasn't the shriek, it was what it came from. Shiloh had seen a lot of wildlife around Ashdown to be sure, but what in the absolute hell was this?

"A weasel...?" he was murmuring quietly to himself, quick to scramble back to his feet. Except for a weasel, it seemed pretty ******** off. And by pretty ******** off, Shiloh meant that probably wasn't a weasel despite looking like a weasel, whatever that meant (because really, what else would it be?). Maybe it was just dark. Maybe he just needed to hurry home. Did weasels even sound like that? He'd never ******** seen one this close, not a wild one.

The not-a-weasel was chittering but it definitely sounded like crying.

In fact Gloom had curled up a bit and was trying to paw at his fluffy tail to make sure it was okay. It was hard to be a thing that wasn't solid here and, and ... His ears pricked forward and entirely white eyes were focused sharply on Shiloh.

He honestly looked like he was something not quite one thing or another, his long fluffy tail more like a pine marten than anything else. His fur was as black as pitch and it helped for him to disappear into the shadows, to be hard to be seen.

"Not a weasel," he spoke. His voice was soft, a little sniffly, and didn't quite sound like it came from any particular place. "m'Gloom." Then he went back to trying to paw and check on his tail.

    ...

    ...what?

Shiloh looked... well, dumbfounded for starters. There was a voice and he had honestly wheeled right around, looking wildly over his shoulder and all around the street. Even though the voice had clarified that it wasn't a weasel, Shiloh's first thought honestly wasn't that the animal he stepped on had been the voice that spoke out to him. That s**t wasn't possible. Animals didn't talk, or at least they sure as hell didn't speak English.

Except, he was alone. Him and the weasel.

He didn't want to look down and acknowledge the creature there. He needed to keep walking forward and ignore whatever was happening. Maybe he'd imagined it? Maybe he was just that tired? Was he losing his ******** mind to voices now too?

"Gloom. Okay." his voice was entirely too tense to be nonchalant, but it definitely came out sounding dull and disbelieving. "Not a weasel. Gloom. Alright."

And it was a little sad, too, because Shioh really liked animals and usually he would have felt awful about this whole ordeal, except really he just felt unnerved and disorientated.

"Sure, alright, okay. I'm just gonna..." he didn't bother finishing, trying to shuffle away from whatever fever dream hallucination he just witnessed. Because if he totally turned around, the weird talking gloom-not-a-weasel wouldn't be there anymore. No way.

"Y'just gonna leave?" There was a loud sniff and a chitter. "Y'stepped on my tail." Player characters were dumb, this is why he preferred non-player characters.

The weasel was totally ******** talking to him.

Honestly, he should have bolted. He didn't. Why the ******** didn't he? Shiloh turned around in a stiff, mechanical motion, blue eyes wide with disbelief as he looked at the tiny creature (which was still very there despite his self consoling).

"Animals don't talk!" he spouted incredulously, pointing an incredibly accusatory finger down at Gloom. He was borderline ready to scream, borderline ready to just... accept this weird fate. It was hard to muster the energy to freak out now that he thought about it.

"Gloom does!!" he retorted. Still pawing at his tail. "Especially when player characters step on my tail!"

He sniffed once, then again as if he was getting tears under control and straightened up to wobble and stand on his hind legs and stare up at Shiloh. "Y'should watch where y'walk. There's other things around and y'can hurt them."

Like he hurt Gloom. His tail wasn't even swishing.

Yep, definitely going crazy. Or dreaming. Maybe he'd been hit by a car walking home and this was just the death throes of his brain trying to make sense of the matter. Maybe this was what hell was like. He expected a little more fire and brimstone.

"P-Player character?!" he gawked. Okay, so hell and/or death was also a video game, apparently. Was life really just a computer simulation? Was this the sims? Who the hell had a stick shoved so far up their a** that they were ******** with his life this bad, then? So many questions, no answers. Just Gloom, the talking ******** weasel, and his existentialism.

"Well than what does that make you?! NPC? Quest giver?" he huffed.

"Mebbe." It sounded exactly how it was spelled, don't ask how. Gloom stared hard at Shiloh, white eyes watching him closely.

He made a chittering noise. Still very much a pine marten. "Not sure you're a player character really yet."

Shiloh was just having a really bad time.

"I'm not a player character!" he shouted rather indignantly at the still-questionably-a-weasel-for-all-he-cared. "This is the real world you know, not a video game."

Then again, this was a talking... rodent, thing. And Shiloh was already going off of the assumption that he was dead, so maybe it was a video game. Hard to tell honestly.

"...is it? Am I dead? Dying?" seemed like a good place to start, because Shiloh obviously couldn't tell the damn difference.

"Of course it is," Gloom retorted. "... 'cause y'definitely not a player character yet!" The shadow marten definitely sounded a little petulant on top of being hurt.

Then, of course, Shiloh's distress seemed to make him chitter softly. "Y'not dead. Y'just caught a sneak peek. There's all sorts of talking things in this town, y'know."

What does that even mean. What did this even mean? What did anything even mean? Shiloh was talking to a goddamn pine marten at some asinine time in the middle of the night.

"...I don't get it." for all the yelling he was spouting before, now he had dwindled to a quiet confusing mess. Sneak peek? And what the ******** was the player character analogy anyway? "I really don't ******** get it".

    He sighed, rubbing his forehead.

"So you're saying there's other talking animals just roaming the ******** around." Alright. Whatever. Cool. Neat. 100% Legit.

Gloom edged forward, a paw pressing to Shiloh's shoe. There should have been some kind of weight to him but there didn't seem to be any.

"Y'will eventually," he replied, "when y'start dreaming."

His head tilted, white eyes luminous in the dark. "Not all the time. Just sometimes. Y'never wondered about what goes bump in the night?"

Why didn't he feel it? He was a statue as Gloom approached him, put his paw to his foot. Half of his mind told him there was no way this was possible, and the other was so tired that he was just content to accept it, and part of him still thought he was dead, or at least hoped.

"D...Dreaming?" the word felt so weird on his tongue. Bump in the night? "But that's..."

    He bit his tongue.

"I-I mean... sure maybe some people do, but the first thought isn't like... weird talking ghost animals..."

He couldn't believe he was having a civil conversation with the pine marten. Well, if it was a dream or if he was dead, he might as well humor it. He awkwardly keeled down to get a better look. "Or well, whatever you are..."
