As much as he still did not appreciate having to power up into a magical derp, Aue was at least becoming more comfortable with doing so. Even the acrobatic, naked, swirling-magic transformation part no longer made him dizzy and nauseous...just mildly annoyed.

He knew that he had a job to do: meeting more of the Order folks (was any group less aptly named?) and gathering information on them, but sometimes he still just wanted to ignore those that were supposed to be his 'kind' and hide away so that he could say he'd powered up but had run into no-one. Or maybe just youma, since those suckers still came after him and his 'bright, shiny aura' like kids did candy.

This evening found the senshi of lemons sitting on a bench in one of the miniature park areas around DCU with a bottle of Mike's Hard Lemonade (the irony was not lost on him), poking at his senshi phone and idly wondering if he could jailbreak it - or if that was even a thing with magically generated phones. He didn't care that the few people walking by from time to time gave him odd looks, he had gone out and murdered some of those dust monsters, powered down to purchase his booze at a liquor store on the way 'home', powered up in an alley again and made his way to where he now sat pretending he was merely taking a break from patrolling, rather than doing his level best to not meet another powered person.

It was All-One that told Quartz about the lone senshi, perhaps finished his patrol, that had decided to take a break on a bench and have a drink. It was always All-One, after all: Quartz preferred to find safe, obscure nooks and crannies to tuck himself away into, and let the youma do the patrolling. Safer that way -- more discreet. It gave Quartz a fair bit more control over his encounters than he might otherwise have. Unexpected run-ins with Camlann (no, with Melanite, he corrected himself, digging a sliver of fear out from between his ribs) were about as much unwanted serendipity as he preferred to court.

That had been the whole point of choosing All-One, after all. The whole advantage. It gave him a measure of control in an uncontrollable world. A measure of safety in an unsafe city.

Now, he listened attentively to All-One's directions as he followed them. Time for a chat, he hoped.

"What kind of a drink?" he asked All-One as he went.

Quartz wasn't sure it was possible for a swarm of bees to shrug, per se -- but if it were, he supposed that All-One might've done that now. As it was, the swarm simply spoke. Without inflection, it was hard to tell when it was irritated . . . but sometimes the idea got across even so.

"Yellow," it said. "How -- should -- we know?" it said. "But," it said, and Quartz raised a silent eyebrow in question, waiting, "whatever it is -- there are -- six -- bottles -- of it."

Quartz offered a wry chuckle. "That narrows it down," he said with a snort.
His kind of person, then: drinking on the job. Promising, perhaps.

"If you say so," All-One answered him in some woman's dubious, recorded voice.

He left All-One scattered, as he approached, keeping mostly safe distances from the area. A single insect lurked beneath the fall of his hair, perched behind his ear, to pass on any potential warnings from the rest of the swarm and, as ever, to record the minutiae of this conversation.

Quartz approached slowly, hands open at his sides, so as not to cause any alarm. He chose a careful smile for the occasion, something meant to be ingratiating but not pushy: warm but apologetic, close-lipped and cautious. "Forgive the intrusion," he said, stopping at a safe distance. "I only want to talk. Captain Quartz," he offered his own name.

Unaware that his presence had not only been noted but reported on, Aue leaned back, a bottle in hand, staring up at a the sky and wondering where Aue was supposed to be, if it were even there. Of course it's there. Just like all the others. And it's a barren hunk of nothing - a site of past wars that should stay where it belongs: in the Past. He'd given up trying to mess with his phone - maybe the cat could tell him more, if he found her again. Or another cat, since there were apparently several.

This was how Quartz would find him: a bright, large spot on a bench, hair down for once, his diadem off (it gave him a headache), stargazing with a freshly opened bottle nestled between his thighs, the rest - including the empty - in the cardboard carrier. Aue's position shifted, as he felt the captain's aura slide across his senses like oil; narrowed eyes sought out the dark-clad officer and took immediate note of the open hands and slow approach.

Big. Big enough to do damage, but doesn't want to fight. Good. I'd rather not. Likely they could have beaten each other bloody without too much trouble, if it had come to it. They're all named after minerals...what an interesting naming convention. "Aue." Straightening slowly, Aue picked up his drink, rolling the bottle between both hands thoughtfully. "So come talk."

Briefly he wondered at whether or not Quartz knew Wolfeite, Tourmaline, Dia, or Labyrinthite...but he was feeling lose, lazy. So he simply pushed the cardboard container towards the side of the bench not occupied, offering hospitality as he could.

"Aue," Quartz repeated carefully. How do you spell that? he wondered. It would be a delightful scrap of Wikipedia research later, he was sure -- looking for a celestial body apparently named 'oh' and figuring out how it was actually spelled. Well, he'd manage it.

He came closer, plucking on of the as-yet-unopened bottles from the carton and wrapping one of his sashes around it so he could twist the cap off with his hand. It came free, and he took a long swig just before seating himself on the far side of the bench.

"Thanks," he said, companionable in the way of two people who seemed equally disinterested in summoning up cheer, but equally interested in drinking. He'd keep it casual. "Not everyone's so chill. You been at this gig a while?"

Aue watched dispassionately as the inky-haired captain mouthed his name; it was rather clear that the man was putting it to memory, for later consideration. Good, not a fool then. Or not so much a fool.

He inclined his head silently to acknowledge Quartz giving thanks for refreshment, feeling the slight metallic taste of a chaos signature sliding across the back of his tongue, his throat; he was growing used to it. A slight bite that made him almost smile with it's strangeness, like good salmiakki. "Long enough to be tired of doing it sober."

Small talk was...difficult. Even having spent many years living in - and being exposed to - America, he found small talk to be one of those things most difficult to adjust to. That, and talking when using public transport - honestly, what the hell?

"A captain, you said. Years of this--" Aue gestured at his costume, then out towards the greater area of Destiny City before taking a swig and letting the still-cold drink burn the taste of chaos from his mouth briefly. "I have no quarrel with you." That starcat, Ash, perhaps, for waking me to this life...though I suppose it's better knowing and being capable of maybe defending myself than just dying without having a clue....

Further exposure revealed a decided accent. Something in the European families of languages -- something Scandinavian, though Quartz, being no expert in the vagueries of the Northern tongues, couldn't particularly distinguish which. No matter -- a foreign import of some kind. He'd put 'of Scandinavian extraction' in the file and let someone else figure out the details. Maybe that big, Norse mountain of a Spec Ops officer.

"Just over a year," he agreed, kicking back another small swig of the beer. It wasn't that he was in the habit of nursing his drinks -- rather, that it would drag out the conversation a bit, give him more time to get his foot in the door.

"I have no quarrel with you, either. I'm not on this side by choice. Not that anyone's really on their side by choice, from one perspective, but -- it's just better to stay on whatever side you're on as long as you can. Being dragged over is hell. You lose more than just your name."

"Ah." An open-throated syllable, spoken with a single raised eyebrow; Aue found it interesting that Quartz would openly admit that he wasn't part of the Negaverse by choice. "Sounds like you'd rather be on the - what is it the cat said? - 'Order' side still. Your commanding officer is not good, then?" That was absolutely something to think on, as was the rest of what his companion spoke of. Labyrinthite was alright, but then Aue hadn't had much exposure to other high-ranking officers - and Laby wasn't kind, he was just very blunt and honest about his requirements. Perhaps the one that took Quartz was terrible in the old meaning and new. Dragged was quite the term to use, and he couldn't help wondering by whom, and why.

Are there not enough wiling soldiers? Or is it that not just anyone can be given power? I could ask a cat, or another senshi. Not the General, indulging my curiousity isn't worth his time. Perhaps the dog would know, or Tourmaline... Aue sat silently, drinking while processing and contemplating the captain's words and their correlation to his own personal experiences, to what his future might be.

When he finally spoke, it was to question, "What else do you lose?" The senshi figured he might as well ask, since the topic had been breached. It would also be useful for later, should he join the way Labyrinthite and the rest of his pack wanted. They keep saying I should be in black...Quartz says he was dragged over. So once, he wore white instead. Costumes magically set to show alignment in binary terms, despite the fluid nature of morality. "I ask for reference. I have...engaged with several of your officers. Each professes that I would look better in black."

Quartz shook his head in a vague 'no.' "I wasn't on any side before -- it was just me. I didn't know any other knights or sailor soldiers, it wasn't me doing buddy-buddy team stuff -- just me trying not to get eaten by monsters, or let other people get eaten by monsters. Nothing glamorous about it. It's just that it was my life, you know? And now it's gone."

He looked askance at Aue, with a grim but sharp smile. Quartz wondered who he'd been talking to, who'd been giving him the 'better in black' spiel. Cinnabar? Xenotime? Clearly he'd been dealing with one of the many officers who gambled on half-information, who relied on tricking people they hoped to recruit by not telling them what they were getting in for.

It was a poor way to establish trust. It was the sort of tactic for people who didn't think in the long term, didn't think ahead to imagine how their dishonesty would impact a relationship down the road. It wasn't how Quartz operated.

"You've been chatting with people who haven't been completely forthcoming with you, then. Careful dealing with anyone who wants to sell you something without telling you what they get in return -- they'll ******** you over every time. Anyway -- what you get in exchange for changing sides, by choice or not, is your mind ripped apart. I can only remember about two hours worth of time from my entire life before I was changed over: only the time I spent powered up. My real life -- who I am, who I was -- it's gone. A big, gaping hole."

A reason to drink. He sat back, leaving the subject of his commanding officer curiously untouched.

Aue's expression sharpened as he focused more fully on what Quartz was saying - this was someone after his own heart, really. On his own side, trying to not be eaten. I can respect that. It was rather what he himself had been trying to do, until he'd met Wolfeite and been introduced to General Labyrinthite and his Pack. From his newfound companion's expression and tone, Aue gathered that he wasn't happy with his lot and felt no strain on whatever loyalties he may - or may not - have had towards the Negaverse in telling a potential 'recruit' just what was what. As far as he knows, how much information are captains given? The Wolf seemed woefully uninformed, compared to Labyrinthite, but perhaps that's more a product of the General and his group than a standard.

"I thought there must be a catch." Aue finished off his beer and tucked the empty bottle back into it's cardboard housing before taking another that he cracked open while speaking, "I've been aware from the start that their interest in my continued survival is extremely selfish and that whatever I've been told is heavily biased towards grooming me for the Negaverse." Which was entirely true - he was aware of his worth to the General, as well as how tenuous his position was - though he had not known he'd lose his entire life if he joined as more than a 'consultant'. Don't kid yourself, there is no 'if'. Labyrinthite wants me corrupted, eventually he'll grow bored of this game we're playing...and that will be the end. Unless I am very clever.

He leaned back and looked up at the stars, thinking about a life lived where the past was in flashes of nothing coherent or cohesive; was it like badly edited student films? "Sounds like a s**t proposition. Thanks, good to know." Definitely something to be wary of - warier. His life as Pasi Järvinen was pretty damned good, did he really want to lose that? What was the trade off? Aue raised his second bottle to Quartz, saluting whomever he'd once been silently before taking a long pull.

"Do I even have a choice, at this point? I've been working for my General and his team for months now." It wasn't really a question, just enough of an upwards lilt to allow for the captain's opinion if he chose to offer it.

Quartz blinked, raising both eyebrows in faint but unfeigned surprise. "If this General of yours has been giving you any kind of protection, other than from himself, let's just say there hasn't been a memo -- and months is enough time to file the paperwork."

He had a suspicion that Aue was being used to fuel someone's ambition, and not in the way that might best serve the Negaverse. If that was true, it meant there was an opportunity here for Quartz to offer Aue more than what he was currently getting.

"What General are you working with?"

He could only nod at what the Captain was telling him, it rang true - not that he'd thought to actually count on working with (for) Labyrinthite to be a deterrent or to protect him from anyone outside the general's pack. Aue had just been lucky so far. "To tell true, I'm not surprised."

Should he bother telling Quartz? There was likely no harm in doing so, besides...this man was showing no interest in mauling him, was enjoying a drink with him, and was willing to offer information. Information was always valuable. "Labyrinthite. Though it was the half-monster Wolfeite brought me to him." Aue tapped the side of his bottle thoughtfully, considering the way he'd been offered like a gift to further the Wolf's goals and then used by American McGee's general for his goals. Ah, but this is the way of things here. Still, I do not like it.

Hunh. Labyrinthite. Quartz had never exactly met the man, so what little he knew of him was from his file and from occasional gossip about him. He was one of the snarling brutes of Spec Ops, generally -- particularly violent, potentially unhinged -- and a soldier in the Negaverse of very long standing.

He was not in the Intelligence Branch. He wasn't exactly known for his soft, sophisticated touch when it came to dealings with the sailor soldiers.

This was turning over a very new leaf, from what little Quartz knew. Perhaps the man had ambitions.

"We're not exactly close associates," Quartz led off, "but you've gotten yourself into some real s**t getting involved with him, from what little I know. He's supposedly a nasty piece of work. Listen -- you should probably keep whatever arrangement you have with him, for your own sake." Quartz sighed and set down his empty bottle. "But if you want protection in general . . . I work for the Intelligence branch. Help me do what I have to do to cover my own a**, and I can get you some real guarantees of safety."

He stood.

"Don't answer now. Give it some thought. If you want to talk again -- find a piece of chalk and write my name on a brick wall somewhere. I'll find you."

A smile, dry but honest. "Thanks for the beer. I'll get the next one."

Aue grunted a bit when Quartz admitted that he and the General weren't exactly close - it was more along the lines of what he'd already observed: Labyrinthite did not cleave to others if at all possible. "Fantastic." Yep, he'd ******** up roundly, not trying to escape Wolfeite - and more so by allowing himself to be taken before American MacGee's General. Too late to back out now, best proceed as I was.

But here was also another good opportunity - Quartz was offering a trade - and supposing that the officer was actually capable of holding up his end...well, it certainly wouldn't hurt, now would it? Aue nodded at the offer of protection and also time to think - that was appreciated; he had much to contemplate.

"Understood." His lips quirked a bit, as close a smile as one was likely to get appearing briefly at the offer to get the next beer. "Until next time then." Aue raised his bottle in salute, but remained as Quartz stood and left - there was no need to move yet, he could think just as well there on the bench as anywhere, after all.
